"But today is your wedding!" Wang Lina reminded her.
Dai Xinyi closed her eyes in anguish, torn between two impossible choices. On one side was the wedding about to begin, and on the other was her friend, whose life was hanging by a thread. How could she decide?
"Dai Xinyi, calm down," Wang Lina urged, trying to keep her tone steady. "If you go looking for him now, it will only make things worse. Have you considered that he might just be manipulating your sympathy?"
Dai Xinyi froze, Wang Lina's words sending a shiver through her. Could it really be true? Was Zhang Tianming merely putting on an act, deliberately causing trouble on her wedding day?
She didn't want to believe it, yet she had to admit that this possibility was not unfounded. She recalled what Dr. Zhao Xiaomei had once said: the behavior of someone with depression can sometimes be unpredictable; they might exploit the sympathy of those around them to achieve their own ends.
Dai Xinyi felt even more conflicted inside, unsure how to discern Zhang Tianming's true intentions.
Meanwhile, in the hotel banquet hall, guests were arriving one after another. Li Wenbo, dressed in a sharp suit and beaming with happiness, greeted each guest warmly, seemingly oblivious to any underlying tension.
As the best man, Chen Jianguo stood by Li Wenbo's side. He keenly sensed that something was off; the bride was late, and although Li Wenbo wore a smile, there was an unmistakable hint of anxiety in his eyes.
"Wenbo, where's Dai Xinyi? Why hasn't she arrived yet?" Chen Jianguo asked quietly.
"Oh, she said she's still getting ready and will be here soon," Li Wenbo replied with a forced smile, trying to mask his growing unease.
"Don't worry," Chen Jianguo patted his shoulder. "Today is your big day! She'll definitely show up on time."
Dai Xinyi took a deep breath as if she had made a significant decision. "Lina, thank you. I know what I need to do." She hung up the phone, determination flashing in her eyes. Quickly changing out of her wedding dress and into casual clothes, she grabbed her handbag and rushed out of the room.
In the hotel corridor, Dai Xinyi hurried along, her heart racing with anxiety. She repeatedly dialed Zhang Tianming's number but only got a busy signal. Biting her lip, she silently prayed that nothing would happen to him.
"Dai Xinyi! Where are you?" Wang Lina caught up with her, trying to stop her.
"I'm looking for Tianming! I can't leave him alone!" Dai Xinyi's voice trembled as tears blurred her vision once more.
Wang Lina wanted to persuade her further but seeing Dai Xinyi's resolute expression, she sighed and chose not to say anything more.
In the banquet hall, the wedding march began to play as guests took their seats in anticipation of the bride's arrival. Li Wenbo stood at the center of the stage, forcing himself to appear calm while growing increasingly anxious inside—a sense of foreboding enveloped him.
Where could she be? What if something happened? The wedding planner Liu Fangfang paced back and forth nervously, glancing at her watch repeatedly. She had arranged for the bride to enter three times already but had been met with disappointment each time.
"Don't panic; let's wait a little longer," Zheng Meiling, the hotel manager, maintained a professional smile but felt increasingly uneasy inside. This wedding was one of the hotel's most important events; if anything went wrong, she wouldn't be able to bear the consequences.
Guests began to murmur among themselves, speculating about what might have gone wrong.
