"Dai Xinyi, you can't go on like this," Wang Lina said with concern. "Look at you now; you don't have the same spirit as before. Zhang Tianming is clearly trying to ruin you, and you can't let him succeed!"
But what else can I do? Dai Xinyi's voice was hoarse and weak. "I've explained myself, but no one believes me. They all think I'm a bad woman, a promiscuous harlot."
"Forget explanations! A scumbag like him deserves to be taught a lesson!" Wang Lina was furious. "Let's report him! Sue him for defamation! Let him rot in jail!"
Dai Xinyi hesitated, biting her lip as she struggled internally. Reporting him would mean escalating the situation, facing those rumors again, and exposing her most humiliating moments to the public. Could she really bear all of that?
"Lina, just let it go," Dai Xinyi shook her head. "I don't want to stir things up anymore; I just want this to pass quickly. I don't want any more trouble."
"Are you stupid?" Wang Lina rolled her eyes in frustration. "Do you think hiding will solve anything? That lunatic Zhang Tianming won't let you go! He wants to drive you crazy! The more you hide, the bolder he gets!"
Wang Lina was so angry she could hardly contain herself, wishing she could pry open Dai Xinyi's thick skull to see what was inside. She snatched the ice cream from Dai Xinyi's hand and said fiercely, "You're such a coward! You deserve to be bullied by that scumbag Zhang Tianming! I'm done with you!" With that, she slammed the door behind her.
Dai Xinyi curled up on the sofa, tears silently streaming down her face. She knew Lina meant well, but she simply didn't have the courage to face those hurtful words again. She would rather hide in her little world and lick her wounds than confront the storm outside.
However, life wouldn't let her escape so easily. A few days later, the district organized a charity event for children with autism, and Dai Xinyi signed up as a volunteer. She hoped this would numb her mind and distract her from her worries.
On the day of the event, Dai Xinyi wore her volunteer uniform, helping set up the venue and distributing flyers. She forced herself to smile, trying hard to appear like a normal person. However, when she saw Kebo and Fang Jing Shu arrive hand in hand at the event, her smile froze.
This was their first meeting since the wedding incident. Kebo wore a simple shirt and jeans, looking vibrant and energetic, while Fang Jing Shu donned an elegant dress that radiated grace and tranquility. The two looked like a perfect couple, piercing through Dai Xinyi's heart.
Instinctively wanting to avoid them, it was too late. Kebo's gaze fell on her as well; their eyes met in an awkward silence that filled the air with tension.
Fang Jing Shu noticed Kebo's unusual demeanor and followed his gaze to see Dai Xinyi. She smiled gently and greeted her openly: "Dai Xinyi, you're here for the event too?"
Dai Xinyi forced out a strained smile. "Yes." Her voice was hoarse, and she avoided looking into Kebo's eyes.
"How have you been lately?" Fang Jing Shu asked with genuine concern.
"I'm fine," Dai Xinyi replied tersely, eager to end this awkward conversation as soon as possible.
Kebo remained silent; he simply looked at Dai Xinyi with a complex expression that was hard to read.
"Bo, let's go over there; it looks like they need help," Fang Jing Shu gently tugged at Kebo's sleeve, breaking the tension.
Kebo nodded and followed Fang Jing Shu away. Dai Xinyi watched their retreating figures with mixed emotions swirling inside her—resentment or regret?
The event proceeded smoothly as volunteers enthusiastically assisted children with autism; laughter filled the air. Dai Xinyi also tried hard to immerse herself in the activities—playing games with the children and telling them stories—attempting to forget Kebo's presence altogether.
