Chen Jianguo and Lin Xiaoxuan often visited their home. Chen Jianguo was Li Bo's college classmate and best man, known for his straightforward and loyal personality. Lin Xiaoxuan was Fang Jing Shu's close friend, full of energy and cheerfulness. Since the wedding, the two had more opportunities to meet, and gradually, they became quite familiar with each other.
One day, Chen Jianguo came over to Li Bo's place for drinks, just as Lin Xiaoxuan arrived to chat with Fang Jing Shu. The four of them sat in the living room, the atmosphere lively and cheerful.
"Hey, Jianguo, you've been coming over to the Bo household quite often lately," Lin Xiaoxuan teased while munching on sunflower seeds.
Chen Jianguo chuckled, "What ulterior motives could I have? I'm just here for the food and drinks."
He glanced at Lin Xiaoxuan, a glimmer of something unusual flashing in his eyes. Maintaining a calm demeanor, he replied with a smile, "But you! Aren't you also showing up here every few days? What crooked ideas are you cooking up?"
Lin Xiaoxuan shot back playfully, "Who’s got crooked ideas? I'm just here to liven things up, unlike some people who are all brooding."
Their banter continued back and forth, each refusing to back down, which made Li Bo and Fang Jing Shu burst into laughter.
Such gatherings became a regular occurrence. Sometimes, Chen Jianguo and Lin Xiaoxuan would show up at Li Bo's doorstep at the same time, exchanging knowing smiles as if they shared a secret connection.
One weekend, Chen Jianguo suggested a picnic in the countryside. Li Bo and Fang Jing Shu readily agreed, and naturally, Lin Xiaoxuan joined in as well.
The scenery outside was beautiful and the air fresh; the four of them enjoyed themselves thoroughly. Chen Jianguo and Lin Xiaoxuan acted like a pair of playful rivals, teasing each other and engaging in lighthearted antics.
As the wind tousled Lin Xiaoxuan's hair, she casually tucked a few strands behind her ear and rolled her eyes at Chen Jianguo. "Brooding? I think you're the one with the most crooked ideas! You're full of tricks!"
Chen Jianguo wasn't offended; instead, he laughed even harder. "It goes both ways! Who told you to always act so clever? If I didn't know better, I'd think you were some kind of business genius!"
After the picnic ended, both Li Bo and Fang Jing Shu felt their relationships with their friends had deepened. Life seemed to return to normal—peaceful and happy.
However, the wheels of fate were quietly turning.
Li Bo was responsible for a large project that had entered its final sprint phase. To meet deadlines, he worked late into the night almost every day, returning home exhausted and collapsing into bed without much time to talk with Fang Jing Shu. Although she understood his situation, she couldn't help but feel a bit lonely.
"Bo, you've been working too hard lately," one evening Fang Jing Shu entered his study with a cup of hot milk. She looked at his bloodshot eyes with concern. "You need to take care of yourself."
Li Bo accepted the milk with a smile. "There's no choice; the project is at a critical stage. Once this is over, things will settle down."
Fang Jing Shu sat beside him and gently massaged his shoulders. "I know that, but you can't let your health suffer. If you wear yourself out, what will I do?"
Li Bo held her hand, feeling the warmth of her palm surge through him like a comforting wave. "Don't worry; I know what I'm doing. Once the project is finished, I'll take you on a trip to relax."
Fang Jing Shu leaned against his shoulder and softly murmured an agreement.
