I almost forgot that the most important thing to be cautious of in Potter's Field is the night!
Although the undead and zombies in Potter's Field have been mostly cleared out after two major purges, the lingering resentment in this place remains thick and palpable. Once night falls, the restless souls and wandering spirits emerge, drifting about and continuously emitting mournful wails.
The chilling sounds echo throughout the vast expanse of Demon Suppression Cave, reverberating endlessly, creating an immersive experience akin to surround sound, making one truly feel as if they are living it...
Oh my God! Help!
I huddled on one of the cleaned stone platforms, trembling and curled up, my wide eyes refusing to close.
Inside Demon Suppression Cave after dark was completely pitch black, with no illumination whatsoever; I couldn't see a thing.
After holding out for a while, I finally couldn't resist and emitted some spiritual light particles to provide illumination. Once I could see the way, I immediately crawled out of the cave using both hands and feet.
I didn't want to stay inside any longer, tormented by that terrifying sound!
Finally crawling out of the cave, I couldn't help but let out a sigh.
Although the sky outside was equally dark, at least there was a faint glimmer of moonlight that allowed me to see somewhat.
Before me were several soul flames glowing with a grayish-blue light, drifting eerily around. Occasionally, I would hear bursts of meaningless harsh curses or sorrowful sobs.
Though it couldn't compare to the amplified echoes within the cave, it was still quite overwhelming.
—"Fear of fear is meaningless." BY Anyeah.
Alright then.
Taking a deep breath, I suppressed the scream that was almost escaping my throat and forced myself to stay put and adapt instead of fleeing.
After silently enduring for a while and getting used to it, I found it wasn't so bad after all.
Those Wandering Spirits were just floating there, endlessly recounting their regrets and sorrows from life, showing no signs of aggression. Occasionally, one or two would notice my presence and curiously drift closer, but as long as I emitted a bit of spirit light to deter them, they wouldn't approach any further.
It seems that the wandering souls here have not yet been tainted by resentment and turned malevolent, so there is no need to be overly cautious.
Just as I was about to breathe a sigh of relief, I suddenly heard a strange rustling sound of footsteps coming from not far away.
A sense of foreboding sent chills down my spine. I slowly turned my head, using the dim moonlight to look towards the source of the sound—
I saw a figure dressed in tattered clothes, with disheveled hair, emanating a foul stench, and moving with stiff limbs, swaying unsteadily as it approached me slowly.
...This guy is definitely not just a passing beggar, right?
Wasn't it said that the corpses in Potter's Field had all been cleared away?! So what is this one in front of me? A fish that slipped through the net? Or an unnamed corpse thrown back into the area after a major purge?
So what’s happening now? Is it trying to force me to level up by fighting monsters?
...Wait! No! I don’t have any attack skills or weapons equipped! How am I supposed to fight?!
System! System! Call the system out quickly; I want to protest!
Just as I stood there trembling in confusion, the zombie had already sensed the presence of a living person. Its previously staggering steps suddenly became swift, and in the blink of an eye, it lunged at me with a roar.
No! Wait a second!
I instinctively dodged to the side to evade its attack, immediately rolling and scrambling to try to distance myself from it. Unfortunately, my trembling hands and feet were beyond my control, and my speed in escaping was severely limited.
—"No matter what happens, face it calmly and cautiously." BY Anyeah.
Please! How am I supposed to stay calm in a life-or-death situation like this?!
After barely managing to dodge a few attacks in a panic, fear overwhelmed me, and I was almost in tears.
Right! I remember reading that there are formations in the cave that can repel zombie invasions?
Yes! That's right! I can do it! Unfortunately, it's already ineffective, and the point is that I can't use it just like that useless Nie Huaisang!
So what can we do now? Are there any other... formations? Right, defense!
I stopped my frantic escape, steeling myself to turn and face the zombie. I stretched my hands forward in a blocking gesture and shouted loudly:
"Light Shield!"
In an instant, a sphere of spirit light enveloped me like a thin membrane.
The zombie's attacks were blocked outside, yet it still snarled and relentlessly tried to break through that layer of light. I dared not let my guard down as I continued to confront it.
Good, the defense is successful. But then what? The current crisis still cannot be resolved!
Am I supposed to hold out until morning for the sun to appear? But the walking dead aren't like the demons in Demon Slayer; they won't disintegrate at the sight of sunlight. Moreover, the thick fog of resentment over Potter's Field sometimes makes it difficult for sunlight to penetrate. It's hard to say if it would even be effective!
Besides, based on my remaining spirit power value, I probably can't last that long. Before the sun comes up, I'll be done for!
So what can I do now? Can someone suddenly descend from the sky to save me?
...Hmm, okay, I understand. Such miraculous luck definitely won't fall on me.
Rather than hoping for rescue, it's more practical to rely on myself.
So, what should I do now?
Think fast! Racking my brain to figure out what methods are feasible... Right! I remember that the walking dead are transformed due to being bound by resentment.
Then, if I can remove the resentment, there shouldn't be a problem, right?
With this realization, I took a deep breath, forced myself to calm down, maintained the Light Shield's activation, and concentrated on chanting the purification incantation.
This time, the Purification Magic felt slightly different from before. I noticed that the spiritual light particles emanating from my body gradually concentrated into a point in the air, eventually transforming into a blade of light that shot through the zombie.
After the blade pierced through, the zombie, which had been fiercely clawing at me, suddenly froze and then fell down motionless.
Breathing heavily, I hesitated for a while before slowly retracting the light shield and cautiously nudging the corpse with my foot.
It really wasn't moving anymore; it had turned back into an ordinary corpse.
Once I regained my composure, I checked the interface and saw that a branch had appeared under the Purification Magic skill, adding an advanced skill: Blade of Purification. As for the Spirit Power value, it was down to one-third, and I felt a slight hunger in my stomach.
It seemed that defeating monsters could indeed lead to evolution and upgrades.
Sigh, I wonder if anything else will appear later. Just to be safe, I should replenish my energy with food first.
I took out the only bun from my sleeve, silently took a bite, and chewed slowly as I watched the Spirit Power value gradually increase bit by bit.
...In the end, eating only accelerated the recovery speed; it couldn't replenish like potions in games.
Well, at least it's recovered to over half now. There shouldn't be too many problems.
After putting away the remaining bun and taking a deep breath, I steeled myself and slowly made my way back to the entrance of the Demon Suppression Cave.
I hope I can get through the upcoming crisis smoothly...
