After completing her discharge procedures, Lin Nuan Nuan stepped out of the hospital doors.
The night breeze blew in, and she tightened her coat around herself, yet still felt cold.
"Get in the car," Ji Mingyu said, appearing by her side. "I'll give you a ride."
Lin Nuan Nuan shook her head. "No need, I want to walk by myself."
"Are you sure?" Ji Mingyu pointed to a black Rolls-Royce not far away. "He doesn't seem like he’ll let you go."
Following his finger, Lin Nuan Nuan indeed saw Huo Jing Shen leaning against the car.
"How annoying," she muttered under her breath.
Ji Mingyu smiled. "Then how about getting in my car?"
After hesitating for a moment, Lin Nuan Nuan nodded. "Okay."
Watching the two leave together, Huo Jing Shen's expression darkened.
He took out his phone and dialed a number. "Find out Ji Mingyu's schedule for this period."
"And…," he paused, "check Lin Nuan Nuan's medical records."
After hanging up, he lit a cigarette.
As the smoke curled around him, he recalled Lin Nuan Nuan's words from earlier.
So she had been ill for a year.
So every time she said she felt unwell, she wasn’t just being coy.
He, however, gave all his tenderness to Su Jin.
Huo Jing Shen fiercely extinguished the cigarette butt, a glint of ruthlessness flashing in his eyes.
He needed to uncover everything.
Including… whether Su Jin had lied.
Ji Mingyu's car stopped in front of an apartment building.
"This is…?" Lin Nuan Nuan asked, puzzled.
"This is the apartment I rented for you," Ji Mingyu replied. "You can't go back to the Huo family."
Lin Nuan Nuan was taken aback. "When did you…?"
"Right when you said you wanted to be discharged," Ji Mingyu said, handing her the keys. "Don't worry, I've already paid three months' rent."
Three months.
That number again.
Lin Nuan Nuan tightened her grip on the keys and forced a smile. "You seem to know exactly how long I have left to live."
"Nuan Nuan…"
"Thank you." She interrupted him, "But I will pay you back for the rent."
Ji Mingyu didn't say anything more; he simply handed her a business card. "This is my personal number. You can call me anytime."
Lin Nuan Nuan took it and turned to leave.
"Wait." Ji Mingyu called out to her, "Are you really not going to have the surgery?"
"If it's a money issue..."
Lin Nuan Nuan shook her head. "It's not about the money."
"Then what is it?"
She turned around, her smile under the moonlight particularly sorrowful. "I just want to know, if I die, will he be sad?"
"You..."
"I'm just joking." Lin Nuan Nuan blinked. "I just feel that living is too exhausting."
The apartment was small but kept very clean.
Lin Nuan Nuan lay on the bed, staring at the unfamiliar ceiling.
Her phone vibrated; it was a message from Huo Jing Shen:
[Where are you?]
She ignored it.
Another message came in:
[Where did you and Ji Mingyu go?]
Still no reply.
A third message arrived:
[Lin Nuan Nuan, you'd better come back right now.]
Lin Nuan Nuan coldly laughed and immediately blocked him.
Just as she put down her phone, the doorbell rang suddenly.
She cautiously walked to the door and peered through the peephole, seeing Su Jin standing outside.
"Sister Nuan Nuan, I know you're home," Su Jin said with a smile. "Open the door."
Lin Nuan Nuan remained still.
"Not opening is fine too," Su Jin leaned against the doorframe. "After all, what I have to say, you can hear through the door."
"Jing Shen found your medical records," she said softly. "Do you know how he reacted?"
"He canceled the engagement banquet and had someone investigate me."
"Sister Nuan Nuan, you won," Su Jin's voice dripped with hatred. "You finally got what you wanted."
Lin Nuan Nuan finally opened the door. "Do you think I'm putting on an act?"
"What else could it be?" Su Jin sneered. "Do you think I don't know about you and Ji Mingyu..."
Slap!
A loud slap echoed in the air.
