On the way to school, I didn’t dare to ask Shen Zhiyan why he hadn’t told me which university he wanted to attend.
Silently, I entered the classroom, feeling a bit dazed during class. What if Shen Zhiyan really didn’t want to go to the same university as me? Could it be that this was where our paths would diverge?
When class ended, I went to get some water, and Shen Zhiyan happened to walk by.
“Why were you staring at me during class? I didn’t annoy you today, did I?” he asked, fixing his gaze on me.
“It’s nothing. I just twisted my neck a bit and needed to stretch,” I replied, coming up with a casual excuse.
Shen Zhiyan reached out and touched my forehead. “You’re not running a fever. Why do I feel like something’s off with you these past couple of days?” he murmured.
“Can’t you think something nice about me?” What if I had just won the lottery and was acting silly?
Oh no, what should I do? It seems like I really, really like him.
The whistle blew—our senior year basketball game was in full swing.
“Go, Shen Zhiyan! Go!” cheered the excited crowd of classmates gathered around the court.
As the game began, the opposing team made the first move. Shen Zhiyan quickly sprinted forward, darting toward the player with the ball like a cheetah. He executed a beautiful steal, prompting cheers from the spectators.
I stood on the sidelines holding a bottle of water. Today, he wore his signature white jersey with the number 7, his tall figure standing out among the crowd.
As the game intensified, the score remained tight. The opposing players were equally fierce in their defense. My heart raced as I watched Shen Zhiyan get tightly marked by an opponent during one of his attacks.
“Shen Zhiyan, go!” I shouted loudly as he dodged left and right, searching for an opening. In that crucial moment, he faked out his opponent and leaped high for a shot.
The basketball arced beautifully through the air and swished through the net! We won!
I squealed in excitement, my hand shaking slightly with the bottle of water.
Shen Zhiyan looked up at me and slowly walked in my direction. Other girls rushed over to him, offering him their bottles of water, but he turned them down.
It wasn’t until he reached me that he accepted the water from my hand. He twisted open the cap and took big gulps.
Sweat glistened on his sun-kissed skin under the sunlight, and his deep-set eyes locked onto mine as if trying to melt me away.
“Shen Zhiyan, you were really impressive today!” I praised him.
“Do you like me just a little bit, considering how amazing I am?” Shen Zhiyan suddenly asked in a low voice.
What... what? Like him? No, I can't say that out loud. What if he doesn't like me back? I wouldn't even have a friend left.
“You... you shouldn't say such things; the classmates are all watching!” I said, my face turning red as I avoided his gaze.
“Oh, I see,” Shen Zhiyan replied, pretending to be profound.
“What do you mean you see?” I pressed him for an answer.
“If it were just the two of us, you would admit that you like me,” Shen Zhiyan teased me on purpose.
“Hmph, dream on! I would never like you!” I pouted angrily.
Recently, something happened that made me feel a bit anxious.
There were always some gifts in my desk—either notebooks, chocolates, or a rose.
I was curious about who was sending them but also afraid of discovering it wasn't the person I hoped for.
The gifts always appeared before class in the afternoon, so I decided to arrive at school early at noon to wait for the person delivering the gifts.
Arriving at school early, instead of going to my seat, I lay down on the last row of seats, covered myself with my uniform, and pretended to be asleep.
