Ma Zhiqiang coldly interrupted her, “Your friends’ comments on social media show they started interacting over a year ago.”
Wang Lina's face turned pale as she slumped on the sofa, realizing her secret had been exposed.
She tried to deny it, “That… that was just a misunderstanding.”
Ma Zhiqiang stepped closer to her, “A misunderstanding? You’ve been blind for two years since your accident, but your eyes recovered two years ago.”
Wang Lina looked at Ma Zhiqiang in terror, “How… how do you know that?”
Ma Zhiqiang sneered, “Your acting is too poor.”
Wang Lina was momentarily stunned. Although Ma Zhiqiang did not state it outright, the implication was clear. She wasn’t foolish; she could read between the lines.
Feeling a mix of embarrassment and anger, Wang Lina questioned Ma Zhiqiang about why her eyes had gone blind and claimed that everything was his debt to her.
At that moment, Wang Lina's phone rang. Upon seeing the caller ID, she immediately softened and hurried into the bedroom.
Ma Zhiqiang was taken aback, thinking how astonishing the charm of a young man could be, able to change Wang Lina’s attitude with just one phone call.
When Wang Lina emerged from the bedroom, she attempted to explain to Ma Zhiqiang, insisting that the boy in the photo was indeed her friend. She added that she posted on social media because Ma Zhiqiang had been indifferent towards her.
She expressed her deep feelings for him, declaring that he was her only man.
In that moment, Ma Zhiqiang seemed to be transported back a few years, when Wang Lina’s eyes had only held him.
But Ma Zhiqiang knew that some things, once they happened, could never be undone.
He had intended to inform Wang Lina about the cancellation of their engagement banquet, but she rushed out like a gust of wind, appearing quite anxious.
Ma Zhiqiang did not chase after her; instead, he decided to stop concerning himself with Wang Lina's affairs.
Two days later, while Ma Zhiqiang hesitated over whether to cancel the engagement ceremony, Wang Lina's parents suddenly appeared before him.
Wang Lina's mother approached him with a lunchbox in hand, expressing concern for his health.
"Zhi Qiang, it’s been so long since we last saw you. How did you get so thin?"
"Auntie made your favorite dishes; come on, give them a try."
Ma Zhiqiang looked at the food before him, feeling a mix of emotions.
Initially, he was filled with guilt and affection for Wang Lina, but now everything had changed.
Wang Lina's parents brought her to his home, clearly intending to prevent their engagement.
"Zhi Qiang, what’s going on between you and our Lina?"
"We thought you two were getting married soon, but..."
"Zhi Qiang, can you please take good care of Lina?"
Ma Zhiqiang looked at the couple before him, feeling only helplessness and a bitter smile.
He had sacrificed so much for Wang Lina, but now everything had turned into a joke.
Wang Lina's parents clearly still did not know the truth; they continued to believe that Ma Zhiqiang was their daughter's savior.
"Zhi Qiang, you really can't let Lina suffer any more," they urged.
"Her eyes have just recovered, and with the added pressure, you must take good care of her."
Ma Zhiqiang gazed at the couple, his heart filled with nothing but a wry smile and resignation.
He understood that some things, once they happened, could never be undone.
Two days later, Wang Lina's parents visited Ma Zhiqiang's office, expressing concern about whether his relationship with Wang Lina was strained due to his busy schedule.
Ma Zhiqiang explained that he had been preoccupied with company affairs and had not been able to pick up Wang Lina. He also mentioned that he was busy preparing for the upcoming engagement ceremony and had not paid much attention to her situation.
Upon hearing this, Wang Lina's parents sighed in relief and offered to help with the engagement ceremony.
Ma Zhiqiang accepted their kindness and promised that he would reach out if he needed assistance.
