Gao Yu and I moved into a luxurious villa in the city center. Crystal chandeliers, leather sofas, a spiral staircase, and the city skyline outside the floor-to-ceiling windows—all of it felt like a dream. We squandered the hefty compensation, indulging in a life of extravagance. High-end restaurants, private cinemas, designer handbags—anything we desired was easily within our reach.
Yet, Gao Yu could never truly find happiness. She refused any alcohol and was haunted by nightmares every night, visions filled with scenes of blood and chaos from another world.
"Lin Xia," one night, Gao Yu held me tightly, her voice trembling, "the system once tried to alter our memories, to erase those painful experiences."
I remained silent, gently patting her back. I knew the system had that capability, but we had both refused it.
"I don't want to forget," Gao Yu choked on her words. "I don't want to forget everything we've been through together. Even the pain is part of our shared memories."
I held her tightly, my heart heavy with sorrow. I understood her feelings; those days of life and death in another world were deeply etched into our souls. Even returning to reality couldn't erase those memories.
I began unconsciously mimicking some of Lu Jingxing's habits—drinking black coffee, listening to classical music, even adopting a similar style of dress. I knew it was ridiculous and absurd, but I couldn't help myself. Perhaps deep down, I still harbored some fantasy about him. Or maybe I just wanted to be more like him, to feel closer to him.
"Lin Xia," Gao Yu looked at me with a complex expression in her eyes. "Did we really win?"
I was taken aback for a moment, not understanding her meaning.
"We got the compensation, Wen Xuan is disgraced, and Yun Xiaoxiao has received her due punishment," I replied. "Aren't we the winners?"
Gao Yu shook her head and smiled bitterly. "We didn't win; we just survived."
I fell silent.
Gao Yu's words struck my heart like a heavy hammer. Yes, we hadn’t won; we had merely survived. We had lost too much and sacrificed too much. We were like two walking corpses, wandering through this bustling city, unable to find direction or a place to belong.
We threw a grand party, inviting everyone we knew. Champagne sprayed everywhere, the music blared, and people in the dance floor twisted their bodies in wild abandon. Gao Yu and I joined the revelry, indulging ourselves without restraint. We drank the finest juices, danced with reckless abandon, laughed loudly, and cried freely. We wanted to leave everything in the past behind us; we wanted to start anew and live brilliantly!
Just then, a cold voice echoed in my mind.
“Warning! The female lead of the novel, Yun Xiaoxiao, has awakened and escaped the mission world. Mandatory recall of both players; the mission continues!”
Gao Yu and I exchanged glances, shock and fear reflected in our eyes. Yun Xiaoxiao had awakened? She escaped? How was that possible?
Before we could process it further, a blinding white light enveloped the entire villa. Once again, we lost consciousness.
When we awoke, we found ourselves back in that familiar room. The system's cold voice rang out once more.
“Welcome back to the mission world, players.”
“Due to the awakening and escape of the female lead Yun Xiaoxiao, the difficulty of the mission has increased. Please prepare yourselves.”
“Main task: Capture Lu Jingxing and Wen Xuan, maintain the stability of the world.”
