The sound of hooves grew closer, and under the moonlight, the leading soldier reined in his horse, causing its front hooves to rise and let out a neigh. "Who are you? Why are you here at this late hour?" the soldier asked loudly, his gaze warily assessing Fu Xingchen.
Fu Xingchen sheathed his sword and cupped his hands in greeting. "I am Fu Xingchen, merely passing through this area. I have yet to find a place to rest, so I paused here. May I ask, Military Officer, where are you headed?"
The soldiers exchanged glances, and the leader sighed. "To be honest, we were on our way to suppress bandits, but the terrain of the Bandit Den is complex, and we suffered significant losses. We had no choice but to retreat for now. In these times, banditry is rampant, and the court is powerless; we small soldiers are also willing but unable."
Fu Xingchen furrowed his brow. "Military Officer, this matter of suppressing bandits cannot be easily abandoned. The common people suffer greatly; if we do not eliminate the bandit threat, they will never find peace."
The soldier smiled wryly. "While that may be true, we lack sufficient weapons and manpower. How can we possibly confront those fierce bandits?"
After a moment of contemplation, Fu Xingchen replied, "Though I am but a commoner, I have learned some martial skills. If I can join you in strategizing, perhaps we can find a way to defeat them."
The soldiers looked at each other in surprise and whispered among themselves for a moment. The leader clasped his fists together and said, "If Young Master Fu can assist us, that would be wonderful. However, this task of suppressing bandits is fraught with danger; you must think it through."
Fu Xingchen declared, "For the sake of the common people, my mind is made up. May I ask if the Military Officer could share more details about the Bandit Den?"
The soldier nodded and said, "The Bandit Den is located in a valley surrounded by steep peaks; there is only one narrow path leading in. The bandits have built fortifications there that are easy to defend but hard to attack. We suffered greatly when we recklessly launched an assault before."
Fu Xingchen lowered his head in thought. After pacing a few steps, he said, "Since a direct attack is difficult, we could try to maneuver from the side. Has anyone explored the peaks surrounding the valley? Perhaps we can find another route."
The soldiers looked at each other uncertainly; one spoke up, "Well... we haven't thoroughly explored the peaks before. We were just thinking of attacking through the main road to resolve the conflict quickly."
Fu Xingchen continued, "Time is of the essence; we should investigate the peaks tomorrow. I have some experience with climbing and can scout ahead. If we can find an alternate route, we may achieve victory through surprise."
As the dawn broke, Fu Xingchen and the soldiers made their way to the vicinity of the Bandit Den. Carrying ropes on his back, Fu Xingchen led the ascent up the mountain. He moved swiftly, using both hands and feet, quickly disappearing from sight.
After a long while, Fu Xingchen finally returned, a look of joy on his face. "I found a small path. It's rugged and difficult to traverse, but it leads around to the back of the Bandit Den. However, it's narrow; only one person can pass at a time, so we must proceed with caution."
The soldiers' spirits lifted upon hearing this. The leader of the soldiers grasped Fu Xingchen's hand tightly. "Young Master Fu, we owe you our gratitude. If we succeed this time, you will be a great benefactor to the people."
Fu Xingchen waved his hand dismissively. "We are all here for the people; there's no need for thanks. Now we need to prepare in advance; we will act tonight."
As night fell, Fu Xingchen and the soldiers quietly set off toward the mountain peak. They moved cautiously along the path Fu Xingchen had discovered, careful not to make any noise. They managed to navigate to the rear of the Bandit Den.
Fu Xingchen whispered, "Everyone, wait for my signal before we storm into the Bandit Den." The group nodded in agreement.
Soon after, Fu Xingchen drew his sword and leaped out suddenly, stabbing down a sentry bandit. "Charge!" he shouted. The soldiers quickly followed suit, engaging in fierce combat with the bandits.
The bandits were caught off guard by this sudden attack and fell into chaos. Fu Xingchen maneuvered through their ranks with agility and precision; wherever he went, bandits fell before him.
"Where did this master come from?" shouted a figure who appeared to be a leader among them. "Brothers, attack! Eliminate them!"
Hearing this, Fu Xingchen charged toward the bandit leader. "Today is your last day!" The leader drew his broadsword and engaged Fu Xingchen in battle. After several exchanges, Fu Xingchen seized an opportunity and struck the leader's arm with his sword. With a cry of pain, the broadsword slipped from the leader's grasp. Fu Xingchen followed through with a kick that sent the leader sprawling to the ground.
"Stop!" Fu Xingchen commanded loudly. "Your leader has been captured; if you don't want to die, lay down your weapons!"
Seeing their leader subdued, the remaining bandits surrendered one by one, dropping their weapons. The soldiers swiftly took control of the situation, binding each of the captured bandits securely.
Although the operation began at night, the people were always attentive to the situation of the battle. Upon learning that the bandit threat had been eliminated, they rushed into the streets, cheering with joy.
Fu Xingchen looked at the smiling faces of the people, feeling a deep sense of satisfaction in his heart. However, he also understood that this was merely a small victory in a time of chaos.
The next day, he set off again...
