Chapter 10: Relieve Suffering and Save Lives
Shen Qingyi lifted a corner of the carriage curtain, watching the familiar streets rush by in a blur.
She clutched tightly to the bundle that Gu Hongru had given her, her heart a mix of emotions.
"Leaving is for the best. Perhaps departing from this sorrowful place will allow me to start anew."
Taking a deep breath, she tried to calm the turmoil within her.
The carriage jolted along the bumpy road before finally coming to a stop in a remote mountain village.
The air was filled with the earthy scent of soil and herbs, a stark contrast to the perfumed atmosphere of the capital.
Shen Qingyi stepped down from the carriage, her gaze falling on the modest clinic before her, feeling a flutter of anxiety.
"Is this where I will live from now on?"
Gu Hongru approached her side and gently patted her shoulder.
"Shen Qingyi, you will learn medicine from Old Wu here. The people are simple and kind; no one will disturb you."
Shen Qingyi nodded, her heart swelling with gratitude.
"Thank you, Uncle Gu."
With a slight smile, Gu Hongru introduced Shen Qingyi to Old Wu before taking his leave.
Old Wu was a kind-hearted elder, with white hair and a youthful face, exuding an air of immortality.
He looked at Shen Qingyi, a glimmer of appreciation flashing in his eyes.
"Good child, your name is Shen Qingyi?"
"Yes, Old Wu," she replied respectfully.
"Now that you have joined my teachings, you may call me Master from now on," Old Wu said gently.
"Yes, Master," Shen Qingyi quickly corrected herself.
Life in the mountain village was simple and monotonous, yet it allowed Shen Qingyi to distance herself from the chaos of the world and focus on learning medicine.
Her master imparted his knowledge generously, and Shen Qingyi was naturally intelligent and diligent in her studies.
She soon mastered the characteristics and uses of various herbs and began accompanying her master to treat the villagers.
"Master, this patient has a persistent cough. Could it be due to wind-cold?"
As she checked the patient's pulse, she sought her master's guidance.
"Yes, it's a wind-cold, but it also carries some lung heat," Old Wu said, stroking his beard. "Prescribe him a dose of Ma Xing Shi Gan Decoction, along with a few herbs to clear heat and detoxify."
"Understood, Master," Shen Qingyi replied earnestly as she took note of her master's instructions and began to prepare the medicine.
Years passed in the blink of an eye, and Shen Qingyi's medical skills became increasingly refined, earning her a reputation as a renowned female doctor.
The villagers affectionately called her "Doctor Shen."
"Doctor Shen, my son's illness was cured thanks to you!" an elderly woman exclaimed, grasping Shen Qingyi's hand with tears of gratitude.
"Indeed, Doctor Shen, you are truly a living Bodhisattva!" another villager chimed in.
Shen Qingyi looked at the grateful faces surrounding her, her heart swelling with joy and a sense of accomplishment.
"Relieve Suffering and Save Lives," she recalled her father's words from his letter, which further solidified her conviction.
"I have finally found my life's purpose."
She thought to herself quietly.
After a while, a large-scale plague suddenly broke out in the nearby town.
People fell ill one after another, and panic spread among the populace.
Old Wu also contracted the plague and was bedridden.
"Master!"
Shen Qingyi anxiously kept vigil by her master's bedside, filled with worry.
"Shen Qingyi, don't panic," Old Wu said with great effort. "I believe you will overcome this plague."
Shen Qingyi nodded, her eyes filled with determination.
"Master, I will."
She began to study methods to treat the plague day and night, poring over medical texts and experimenting with various herbs.
Sleepless and forgetting to eat, she finally discovered a prescription that could control the spread of the plague.
She handed the prescription to the townspeople and personally guided them in brewing and taking the medicine.
Through her efforts, the plague was finally brought under control, and everyone gradually recovered.
"Doctor Shen, you are truly our savior!"
The recovered townsfolk expressed their gratitude to Shen Qingyi.
Looking at them, Shen Qingyi felt a deep sense of satisfaction.
"I only did what I was supposed to do," she said softly.
Having gone through the Plague, Shen Qingyi's medical skills had become even more refined, and her reputation spread far and wide.
She not only healed the bodies of the local people but also mended their spirits.
She became the guardian of the nearby towns and found her own happiness.
"Perhaps this is what I have always wanted."
She gazed at the distant green mountains, her heart filled with tranquility.
