The next morning, Dad returned home.
He looked exhausted and haggard.
As soon as he stepped through the door, he knelt before Mom, clutching her legs and crying bitterly.
“Wife, I was wrong!”
“I can’t live without you!”
“I really can’t live without you!”
Dad cried with snot and tears streaming down his face.
Anyone who didn’t know would think he loved Mom deeply.
“Wife, I’ve loved you all these years.”
“That awful woman can’t compare to you at all!”
“I only love you!”
Dad sobbed as he made his accusations.
Mom listened quietly, her expression blank.
Seeing this, Dad cried even harder.
I watched him with cold eyes, knowing he was just putting on a show.
This was how he had deceived Mom in the past!
Mom had a soft heart and always forgave him.
As a result, Dad felt even more emboldened to hurt her!
In this lifetime, I would never let him have his way!
I couldn’t help but roll my eyes.
Dad still had dark circles under his eyes; the skin beneath them was a deep shade of blue-black. It seemed he truly hadn’t slept a wink all night.
But I knew it wasn’t because he missed Mom.
It was because Grandma in the hospital had kept him up all night!
Grandma favored boys over girls and had always looked down on Mom.
She constantly nagged about wanting a son to inherit the family business and carry on the Chu Family name.
In his helplessness, Dad sought out another woman to have children.
Meanwhile, Grandma pressured Mom to drink various remedies in hopes of bearing a son.
Dad, unwilling to let Mom suffer, secretly had the mistress get pregnant.
He did this not only to satisfy his own desires but also to prove to Grandma that he was capable.
Little did he know, Grandma actually encouraged him to get a divorce!
That’s when Dad panicked.
What benefit would a divorce bring him?
Not only would his years of being a Filial Son crumble, but he would also lose Mom's care and Grandpa's inheritance!
Dad worked in a bureaucratic job with a meager salary.
To earn more money, he forced Mom to set up a stall to support the family.
He, on the other hand, was responsible for pleasing Grandma and Grandpa to maintain his reputation for being "filial."
After all, in Grandma's eyes, only Dad was her support!
Even Dad's job was secured through connections that Grandma had arranged.
Mom had no family backing her; she could only rely on her own efforts to support the entire household.
Dad was well aware that he had mistreated Mom over the years.
Yet he took advantage of her love for him, for their family, and hurt her without restraint!
Now, realizing he couldn’t divorce Mom, Dad devised another scheme of playing the victim in hopes of winning her back.
Sure enough, he said again, “Honey, I’ve done all this for you all these years!”
“The Old Chu Family has no descendants; Mom has always pressured you into drinking remedies for a son.”
“I felt sorry for you, which is why I sought out another woman to have children.”
"But I don't love her at all!"
"I just want you to be with me, my wife..."
Dad cried out, tears streaming down his face.
Mom listened quietly.
Seeing this, Dad cried even harder.
I couldn't bear to watch any longer.
His pretentious act made me sick!
Since he loved to play the victim so much, I would let him have his performance!
I gently tugged at Mom's sleeve.
Mom understood.
She threw herself into Dad's arms, sobbing.
"Honey, I'm sorry!"
"It's my fault for not giving the Chu Family a son!"
"Honey, go ahead and hit me!"
Mom cried until her voice was hoarse.
Dad was stunned.
He stared blankly at Mom. "Wife, what are you saying?"
Mom cried even harder.
