Ming You stood outside the office, watching her current boss, Furious, as the room inside lay in ruins, barely a few intact items remaining. She scoffed at the suffocating incompetence of these fools, lamenting how such a promising situation had been ruined by a bunch of idiots.
The Stealing Life Experiment was originally intended to benefit all of humanity, yet due to the selfishness of a few old-timers, it had devolved into chaos and mudslinging, tarnishing its reputation and turning it into something everyone despised.
From her research, she discovered that this experiment was initially proposed by a few Ghost Messengers tired of their Underworld existence. They sought to voluntarily transfer souls into new bodies, granting what could have been mere decades of life an infinite potential. However, as failures mounted, some within the team began to see operational possibilities and developed other ideas—such as preserving failed bodies and infusing them with various substances to create something akin to Living Dead.
Their dissatisfaction grew; citing a lack of volunteers as an excuse, they began to abduct suitable living individuals for experiments. With the help of Ghost Messengers, they even successfully altered the experiment's objectives to focus on creating perfect humanoids, using not only living humans but also surrounding spirits as experimental materials to try every conceivable operation.
As failures increased, those still alive were branded as insane while the deceased were disposed of through burning to erase all traces. The controllable Living Dead became invaluable in carrying out tasks and deflecting blame.
There were several attempts to eliminate the laboratory; they used these actions to silence dissenters around them while operating in the shadows. They extended their influence into the hands of city rulers, securing numerous benefits and conveniences for themselves.
What could have continued indefinitely was disrupted when discontented fools within the lab exposed its existence, aiming to carve out their own freedom now that technology had matured. They leaked information about half-finished products and lab-related news back into society, reviving previously buried issues.
Teams that had once participated in extermination operations and suffered setbacks viewed this move as a provocation. Upon discovering infiltration within their ranks during investigations, they began a major overhaul.
"Ah..." Just thinking about these fools' absurd actions made her want to loudly curse them in her mind.
"You’re part of that too; cursing them is like cursing yourself," her brother would quietly listen to her complaints when they met. She would rant about everyone from her boss down to subordinates, determined not to overlook any fool who supported freedom out of dissatisfaction with the status quo.
She scorned being associated with them, insisting that her involvement was for the sake of truth and peace among humans—not for any Lao Shuzi's quest for immortality. "Humans living so long only become things the world despises, just like what they are doing now. As for those Ghost Messengers, it's hard to judge."
Ming Hua still couldn't understand how her sister—often described as "different from others"—managed to locate the lab's hideout when her years of investigation had led her into dead ends. How did she infiltrate so quickly in just two months?
Ming You explained it simply: she was exceptionally gifted.
So when she saw Song Bunan accompanying Mighty Falcon at Mang Mountain, she realized he must have significant ties to the laboratory. As one of the current core members of the lab, she needed to provide her friend with leads.
She sent information through various means until she finally spotted him under the name Liu Xing in communications between the Jiang Family and New Life Hospital.
"I think with the Ghost Messenger's entourage backing us up, we can clear out some of those muddled minds here. It's so stupid; even sitting in other buildings I feel suffocated by their foolishness." She held a perpetual attitude toward this group referred to as "the higher-ups," wishing for their early demise and rebirth.
Ming Hua originally thought it was dangerous for a young girl to mix in such places, but after seeing her navigate through it effortlessly and advance in her daily tasks, she shifted from persuasion to encouragement, occasionally receiving useful information in return.
"They're completely conducting experiments just to satisfy their own interests. Why hasn't the Ghost Messenger taken action yet?" Ming Hua pondered this matter. Logically, if the Ghost Messenger had initiated this from the start, those involved wouldn't have ignored it. However, over a decade had passed since the laboratory began its work; surely it couldn't still be undiscovered.
Ming You, on the other hand, remained opposed. Whenever Ming Hua rambled on, she would retort directly, "Why do you care about those trivial matters? It has nothing to do with us. Song Bunan isn't worried about your pointless concerns. You could be using that time to clean the house."
Having always struggled to win an argument against her younger sister, Ming Hua chose to remain silent, closing her eyes and shutting her mind off from further discussion.
"Speaking of which, it's surprising that Bunan's information is even in the laboratory records. We've been with him for so many years and never heard of anything related to the lab happening," Ming You remarked as she sifted through documents. She found it puzzling that Song Bunan's name appeared; all that was inside the folder was a simple information sheet he had filled out back in school.
Was he considered a target? She had researched the criteria these people used for selecting subjects for experiments. If Song Bunan were to be used, he would indeed make an excellent specimen.
She had shared this concern with Ming Hua, who after much contemplation mentioned, "Do you remember when we were seniors and he was a junior? There was that Multi-City Joint Training program that came looking for participants. Only Song Bunan was selected and spent an entire year there. Could it have something to do with that?"
"That sounds familiar. I remember when he returned; he looked emaciated and his personality had changed drastically. He initially said he would join you at Mighty Falcon after graduation but ended up deciding to go solo instead."
Ming You recalled having seen Song Bunan change clothes occasionally. Besides an old scar on his back, there were new marks on his chest and body that didn't seem like they could have come from training injuries—especially the one on his chest, which was clearly a gunshot wound.
What kind of joint training could result in a gunshot wound? The siblings hadn't inquired further; something that could turn a lively student into a taciturn and indifferent person was surely something he preferred not to remember. Fortunately, the later version of Song Bunan returned to his former self, alleviating their worries.
They agreed that they needed to pull him aside sometime soon to ask him about it properly; as compensation for providing him with so much information, they needed to know the details.
At New Life Hospital, after Song Bunan and Xin Yi dealt with that person and left, Ming You was the first to arrive at the ward. She looked at the fallen Ghost Messenger, laughing uncontrollably while clapping her hands.
"Never experienced such a significant loss before, huh?" She squatted down to look at the man who was seething with rage and disdainfully lifted the large Patient Gown to reveal the decayed state beneath. "When selecting personnel, why didn’t you consider who’s backing them? You gave up Ghost Messenger's advantages by choosing to become human—purely insane. Now you’re left without a suitable body and can’t return to your position as Ghost Messenger. Regretting it now?"
His eyes were bloodshot with rage as he questioned why. Ming You innocently replied, "I don't support exposing this matter publicly; if others can eliminate you using someone else's hands, I’d be quite pleased. Now, show me your final usefulness."
The broken body lacked the ability to resist a healthy human's strength; the man gasped his last breath in Ming You's grasp as his fragile neck snapped, collapsing onto the ground like a limp noodle. Ming You washed her hands with alcohol from a tray and glanced at the small nurse who had sat up. When their eyes met, she asked if she knew what needed to be said next.
"Understood," the young nurse smiled. "A member of the Mighty Falcon infiltrated the Jiang Family doctors and killed the elder, framing him as a kidnapper."
"Good," Ming You did not hesitate to praise her subordinates. She had made it clear that as long as they were smart and loyal, she would ensure they would not be used as test subjects in this laboratory. Her subordinates were all clever, organized in their tasks, and well-liked.
"What about Lin Ling?" They walked towards the fourth floor, where a batch of failed subjects had already been dealt with. The new replacements were curiously observing their sudden appearance, some even waving to greet them.
The young nurse replied with a smile, "She has been taken care of. Her actions were too conspicuous and exposed our whereabouts. Once she lost her usefulness, she was completely eliminated, with no chance of return."
Although she knew that their actions wouldn't remain hidden from Shui Su for long, Lin Ling's blatant attempts to reveal her intentions under the influence of that foolish thing were simply intolerable to her.
Rather than allowing them to discover the laboratory's little tricks and retaliate, it was better to expose themselves completely to the sunlight and force them to redesign their plans.
"New Elder, why did you choose to befriend them?" The young nurse's curious gaze couldn't hide her confusion. She truly didn't understand why someone investigating the laboratory would want to be friends and share information about it.
Meeting the young nurse's eyes, Ming You lightly replied that using others as tools was best done with familiar faces. "When you report back to them, make sure to clarify the true identity of that man named Liu Xing. We can't let them misidentify their target and waste a warrior."
"It's strange; why would someone who helps others burn paper come to investigate the laboratory? Could it be that someone asked him to look into their missing family member?" The young nurse had quite a fondness for the round-faced Brother but was left puzzled upon learning his true identity. It seemed so unrelated to this place; how could he possibly be involved in the laboratory's affairs?
Ming You did not respond to this matter. By the time the young nurse turned back in confusion, the New Elder had already vanished, leaving her alone in the corridor facing the curiosity of new patients.
The New Elder was indeed a peculiar person.
