Tong Le waved her hand, unsure of what to say. Recently, she had been experiencing dry heaves, especially when she smelled food. At the dining table, Zhang Huizhi hesitated for a moment, looking uneasy. "You’re not pregnant, are you?"
Tong Le shook her head. "I don’t know, but if I count the days, it’s not impossible. The last time Ke Wenjie came home drunk was just about right."
She was lying, of course. The last time Ke Wenjie had come home in a drunken stupor, he was completely out of it and had no recollection of what had happened. Tong Le was just making up an excuse to deceive Lan Qingqing and Zhang Huizhi. After all, neither of them wanted her to be pregnant.
Zhang Huizhi was dumbfounded. Over the past year, she had been giving Tong Le traditional medicine that was supposed to prevent pregnancy. How could it be that this little vixen had ended up pregnant? Wasn’t that absurd?
Lan Qingqing felt a pang of discomfort as well. She had been by Ke Wenjie’s side for so many years with the hope of one day replacing Tong Le and becoming his wife. Now that Tong Le was pregnant, how could she ever take that position?
Tong Le noticed the subtle expressions on Lan Qingqing and Zhang Huizhi's faces. Both of these malicious women were clearly unhappy about her potential pregnancy, and the more they didn’t want something to happen, the more she felt compelled to make it happen.
In that moment, Tong Le formulated a plan in her mind. She would gradually push Lan Qingqing into making reckless decisions. While she couldn’t convince Ke Wenjie to divorce her, she could certainly assist Lan Qingqing in becoming the catalyst for tearing apart this marriage.
She wouldn’t force Ke Wenjie into a divorce with a fierce demeanor; otherwise, she would be labeled as a promiscuous woman. Given Ke Wenjie’s vengeful nature and his underhanded methods, there was no way she could survive this marriage if he turned against her.
Thus, she decided to play the passive role. For years, Ke Wenjie had maintained an image of being an amiable person; now it was her turn to embody that persona.
Zhang Huizhi appeared slightly anxious. Lacking education, she revealed her true self with just a little provocation. "Tong Le," she said nervously, "you’re not really pregnant, are you? Your recent schedule has been unstable; you were sick with a fever not long ago. Is it even possible for you to have a healthy baby under these circumstances? You should go to the hospital for a check-up right away! If you are pregnant, we can’t risk anything—our first child in the Ke family must be healthy and smart! It’s bad luck otherwise!"
Lan Qingqing tried hard to mask her own panic but still showed signs of it. "Yes, Tong Le," she added hurriedly. "How about I accompany you to the hospital this afternoon? You were sick recently and took fever medication; I’ve heard from friends who have given birth that taking such medication while pregnant isn’t good for the baby. Plus, your current health condition doesn’t seem great."
Zhang Huizhi seized the opportunity to praise Lan Qingqing. "Look at Lan Qingqing; her complexion is rosy and vibrant! She has so much energy! And then look at you—you look like a worn-out old woman! With your current state, what kind of healthy child could you possibly have? If people saw you two walking down the street together, they might think you’re her mother!"
Tong Le glanced at herself in the mirror; while Zhang Huizhi’s words were exaggerated, her complexion truly wasn’t good. How could it be? For three years, she had been busy taking care of everything while swallowing her pride and enduring countless schemes and betrayals. She had exhausted all her strength just to reach this point.
Back in college, she had been the belle of the school; back then, Lan Qingqing couldn’t even compare to her. If it weren’t for Lan Qingqing’s recent investments in medical aesthetics and cosmetic procedures over the years, she would still be an inconspicuous passerby.
And all those expenses for Lan Qingqing’s beauty treatments had come from Ke Wenjie.
Tong Le finally spoke up. "Alright, I’ll go to the hospital this afternoon for a check-up. If I really am pregnant and the doctor advises against keeping it, I’ll terminate it."
She immediately returned to her bedroom and picked up a white bag from the floor before handing it to Lan Qingqing. "I need to trouble you with something," she said earnestly. "I promised Ke Wenjie I’d bring him some clean clothes at work this afternoon, but since I’m going to the hospital for my check-up instead, I’ll need you to deliver them for me."
Lan Qingqing took the clothes with an outward show of concern. "But what about me? Shouldn’t I accompany you to the hospital? Can you manage on your own?"
Zhang Huizhi chimed in dismissively. "What’s there to worry about? Tong Le hasn’t even left her room in days! She spends all day holed up in there staring at that broken computer—she needs some fresh air!"
Tong Le glanced at the clock and said to Lan Qingqing, "Let me walk you downstairs. You need to hurry to the company and deliver the clothes to Ke Wenjie, or you’ll be late."
