Tong Le stood under the streetlight, looking at Zong Zeyu with a puzzled expression. "Are you following me?"
Zong Zeyu shrugged. "You could say I'm just really bored."
Tong Le couldn't understand Zong Zeyu's reasoning. She took out her phone, ready to transfer money. "How much did I spend at the bar? I'll send it to you. When I left, I asked the bartender, but they wouldn’t tell me how much it was and said it was your order."
Zong Zeyu silently gazed at Tong Le's face, lost in thought.
Tong Le lifted her head, her big eyes wide. "Hey, say something!"
Zong Zeyu withdrew his gaze and frowned slightly, feeling a bit unwell.
Tong Le repeated, "How much did I spend at the bar? I'll send it to you."
Zong Zeyu flatly refused. "Forget it."
Tong Le, like a little tiger, bared her teeth slightly. "Are you messing with me?"
Zong Zeyu replied logically, "If I were messing with you, would I be letting you pay?"
Tong Le found some merit in his words but didn’t want to owe him anything. She still transferred one thousand yuan to him, but Zong Zeyu immediately returned it.
Unable to argue further, she conceded. "Fine, I’ll find a way to repay you later. You’ve done me a favor; I’ll pay you back slowly."
She then asked, "Are you hungry? I can go buy you something."
Zong Zeyu inquired back, "Do you think I owe you a favor?"
Tong Le thought for a moment. "Well, you gave me things and helped me settle the bill. Although you still haven’t given me that piece of land, my intuition tells me you're not a bad person."
Zong Zeyu said, "Do you know the background of that piece of land?"
Tong Le was confused. "The background? Isn’t that land something my dad asked you to help hold? Although I don’t really understand why he asked you instead of keeping it under his own name."
Zong Zeyu replied, "You don’t know the story behind that land?"
Tong Le racked her brain but couldn’t remember anything special about that land—how it came to be or where it was located. Her father had never mentioned acquiring any property like that to her.
She said, "Did my dad acquire that land? Or did another company use it as collateral? My dad has been in real estate his whole life; sometimes partners would use properties to settle debts."
Zong Zeyu could tell that Tong Le genuinely had no idea about the background of that land. It was evident that regarding the marriage alliance between the Zong Family and the Tong Family, Uncle Tong had never brought it up with Tong Le.
Uncle Tong loved Tong Le dearly and wanted his daughter to live freely without pressure or interference in her marriage.
Zong Zeyu remembered his father saying that the marriage between the Zong Family and the Tong Family was something Uncle Tong planned to announce when Tong Le went to college. At that time, he intended for the two families' children to meet and see if they got along; if they did, they would marry; if not, the engagement would be nullified. After all, this was a new era—not like the old days.
It was expected that once Tong Le entered university, she would find herself a boyfriend, and with that, her engagement was put on hold. Only Zong Zeyu remained trapped in this engagement, unable to move on. He had fallen for Tong Le at first sight, and even after learning that she had a boyfriend and was even married, he still held onto the hope that she might divorce.
He genuinely wished for Tong Le to leave Ke Wenjie. He would be willing to give anything if only she would choose to part ways with him. As for the piece of real estate, what started as a betrothal gift transformed into a gesture of gratitude from the Zong Family to the Tong Family. After all, many years ago, without the Tong Family's assistance, the Zong Family would never have developed to such prominence.
Zong Zeyu spoke up, explaining that this land was actually a gift from the Zong Family to the Tong Family.
Tong Le was puzzled. "A gift? Your family is giving my family a piece of real estate worth over a hundred million? Is your Zong Family really that wealthy?"
Zong Zeyu chuckled softly. "Well, it depends on who it's for."
Tong Le narrowed her eyes. "Are you trying to trick me?"
Zong Zeyu replied, "The land was given with conditions attached."
Tong Le raised an eyebrow. "What conditions? Did my father agree to this?"
Zong Zeyu wanted to say that this land was essentially a betrothal gift, but he held back. He feared that if he revealed the truth, given Tong Le's personality, she might outright refuse the land and cut off all ties.
Changing the subject, Zong Zeyu asked, "Do you think you're happy?"
Tong Le looked confused. "Have you been drinking? Why are you suddenly talking about life and happiness?"
She sniffed at Zong Zeyu; there was no trace of alcohol on him. It seemed that during their time at the bar earlier, he hadn’t touched a drop and had turned down all the drinks offered by other girls.
Tong Le began to see Zong Zeyu in a new light.
Zong Zeyu insisted, "I want to know your answer."
After thinking for a moment and taking a deep breath, Tong Le replied, "To outsiders, I appear very, very happy."
