"Do you think you are happy?" Zong Zeyu asked.
In that moment, Tong Le paused, her voice catching in her throat. It seemed that no one had asked her if she was happy for a long time. For the sake of not worrying her father, she always pretended to be strong, presenting only the beautiful side of herself to everyone.
Outsiders believed Tong Le's life was perfect, but only she knew the truth: the festering wounds within her had spread deep into her very being.
Perhaps it was the cool night breeze, or maybe the melancholic music from the convenience store nearby, or perhaps it was the alcohol clouding her thoughts, but in Zong Zeyu's gaze, she saw genuine concern and blessings.
In the silence of the night, Tong Le did not answer his question. She didn’t know how to respond; the farewells and hurts she had experienced were beyond words.
Maybe silence spoke louder than words, and perhaps the tears that welled up in her eyes could convey the bitterness and betrayal she felt. She didn’t even realize she was crying—so helpless and out of place. Just moments ago, she had called Zong Zeyu strange; now, it was she who felt strange.
Zong Zeyu’s heart ached as he looked at her. He wanted to hold her and ask why she was crying. But Tong Le didn’t give him that chance.
She quickly wiped away her tears and forced a smile. "It's strange; my eyes are stinging. It's getting late; I need to take my friend home."
As Tong Le turned to leave, Zong Zeyu grabbed her wrist.
She halted in her tracks, and he spoke again. "If you ever want to talk, you can always find me."
Tong Le turned back, tears still glistening in her eyes, but her smile remained strained.
Zong Zeyu took a deep breath and said softly, "Just remember, I'm here for you."
Tong Le nodded, feeling a strange connection with this friend of hers.
Zong Zeyu watched as Tong Le returned to Tian Ling’s side, and they both got into the car together. It wasn’t until Tong Le drove away that he realized with a jolt—this silly girl was drinking and still dared to drive!
He immediately got into his car, ready to intercept hers. But just as he turned around, he saw Tong Le’s car stop; it seemed she was preparing to call for a designated driver.
Meanwhile, inside Tong Le's car, she almost forgot that she had been drinking. She searched online for a professional designated driver and waited quietly, lost in thought.
She recalled the moments shared with Zong Zeyu and his piercing question about happiness. Out of everyone, he was the first person to ask her if she was truly happy.
She smiled helplessly, feeling as if she had been seen through by someone she barely knew. For a moment, she didn't know whether to feel grateful or to mock herself.
In the back seat of the car, Tian Ling groggily sat up.
Tong Le turned around and said, "I called a driver; you should sleep for a while."
Tian Ling looked out the window, searching for that handsome guy from earlier. "Where did that handsome guy go?"
Tong Le laughed, "You still recognize him as a handsome guy? Aren't you allergic to men? So, does that mean you're not allergic to handsome guys?"
Tian Ling's cheeks flushed slightly as she drunkenly replied, "Everyone knows men are men, and handsome guys are handsome guys; they are two different species!"
Tong Le said, "So if I find you a handsome boyfriend, do you think you could overcome your psychological barriers?"
Tian Ling's eyes were hazy as she thought for a moment and shook her head. "No."
Tong Le remarked, "No matter how handsome he is, it would be pointless for you."
Tian Ling asked, "When did you meet him? In college? I’ve never heard you mention him before."
Tong Le frowned. "College? How could that be? I just met him a couple of days ago."
Tian Ling insisted, "Don't lie to me! Even though I'm drunk, my mind is still clear! You knew him since your freshman year, but you've never told me about him!"
Tong Le turned back to look at Tian Ling as if she were a fool. "I think you've really drunk yourself silly; you're starting to ramble."
Not wanting to deal with Tian Ling anymore, Tong Le said, "Just go to sleep; otherwise, you'll get car sick and throw up again."
Tian Ling sat up straight. Although she was tipsy, her mind was very alert. "He’s the guy who saved you when the library caught fire! I can't be mistaken! He was just too handsome! When Ke Jie and I ran into the library looking for you, he was the one holding you and kneeling at the stairway on the fifth floor! He carried you out of the flames! At that time, he was kneeling on the ground with you in his arms, both of you unconscious from smoke inhalation! Then Ke Jie took you away while I found other classmates to carry that guy out! I can't be wrong because he is the most handsome guy I've ever seen! But after that day, I never saw him again!"
Tong Le was stunned. She looked at Tian Ling's serious expression and realized that Tian Ling wasn't making things up.
Nervously, Tong Le asked, "You just said that when the library caught fire, it was Zong Zeyu who saved me from the flames? Wasn't it Ke Jie? It was clearly Ke Jie who carried me out of the library!"
Tian Ling replied, "Yes, Ke Jie carried you out of the library. But it was that man who saved you from the fire on the fifth floor. The fire was only on the fifth floor; there wasn't any fire below it, but there was smoke. When we took you to the hospital and after you woke up, you agreed to be with Ke Jie. I forgot about this because I had to undergo checks and treatment too; I inhaled quite a bit of smoke while trying to save you."
