The door closed firmly as Tong Le shook off Ke Wenjie. Seeing her anger, Ke Wenjie hurried to appease her. "Honey, it was my fault. I got too worked up just now, but you have to understand me. The reason I acted impulsively is that I love you! I'm really worried about you; I'm afraid you'll go out and get involved with someone else." As he spoke, Ke Wenjie fell into a deep sense of guilt, even starting to slap his own face in an attempt to win Tong Le's forgiveness.
Outside the bedroom door, Zhang Huizhi pressed her ear against the door to eavesdrop. She could vaguely hear Ke Wenjie apologizing in a hushed voice, and though she couldn't make out the words clearly, she heard the sound of slapping. A wave of satisfaction washed over her—surely Tong Le was getting hit!
Zhang Huizhi felt triumphant. "You foolish thing, in the end, you'll still be dealt with by my son! Sooner or later, I'll drive you out of this house!" She hummed a little tune as she returned to her own room.
In the master bedroom, Ke Wenjie pleaded for Tong Le's forgiveness. He took her hand and guided her to sit by the bed. Kneeling on one knee, he spoke gently, "Honey, I scared you just now, didn't I? I promise it won't happen again."
But Tong Le had already come to her senses and would no longer be fooled by Ke Wenjie's series of pretentious acts. It was all fake, all a performance meant for her eyes only.
With a numb expression, Tong Le finally spoke up. "Why do you think I would cheat? We've been together for seven years; do you really think I'm the kind of woman who would casually stay out all night?"
Ke Wenjie shook his head vigorously. "Of course not! I just lost control of my emotions. Honey, I really didn't mean it."
Tong Le continued, "Or do you feel guilty? Do you think I don't love you anymore? Or have you changed your heart and worry that I might change mine too?"
Ke Wenjie paused, his tone faltering. "What are you talking about?"
Tong Le glanced at herself in the vanity mirror; her neck bore a distinct red mark from where he had gripped her tightly. It was quite dramatic—no wonder she felt like she was about to faint earlier.
Ke Wenjie continued to apologize profusely. "I won't go to work today; how about I accompany you shopping? We can go eat delicious food at your favorite restaurant? Honey, I truly know I've made a mistake."
Tong Le pressed on, "Your mother actually wants us to divorce. You heard the horrible things she said earlier. Why don't we just get divorced? Otherwise, I can't stand seeing your mother's face every day."
Ke Wenjie panicked slightly; these words were something Tong Le would never have said in the past. She had always been understanding and family-oriented. Now that he was at fault for losing control and resorting to violence, he knew he had to accept the consequences.
Divorce was not an option for him—he still had his eye on that piece of land worth hundreds of millions.
Holding Tong Le's hand tightly, he pleaded, "Honey, we can't get divorced. You know I can't live without you; I love you! And you're pregnant now—how could we possibly divorce? I know you're just saying this out of anger. Let's live our lives together; I swear I'll never make such mistakes again!"
Tong Le seized the opportunity and replied, "Then let your mother move out. I can't imagine what would happen if I stayed out late again—would she come at me with a kitchen knife?"
Ke Wenjie argued back, "Honey, you're pregnant and need someone to take care of you; my mom can help with that."
Tong Le countered sharply, "Are you sure it's your mom who will take care of me? Ke Wenjie, how did I never notice before that you could lie so easily?"
Ke Wenjie was somewhat taken aback; the old Tong Le would never have talked back like this. Even when they had conflicts in the past, as long as he humbled himself a bit and coaxed her, she would calm down immediately.
But now, it was different. He couldn't understand what was happening; perhaps it had something to do with pregnancy? Hormonal instability?
