Tong Le pressed on, "If you don't want your mother to leave, then I'll move out. Right now, it's really hard for me to calm down because of the two of you. I have emotional scars. Besides, I need to go to work. The last time I went to the office, a female employee in a tight skirt bumped into me on purpose and acted all sarcastic. I suspect she was trying to show off or flirt with you in front of me. I have to go to work; otherwise, I'll just be stuck at home overthinking everything and drive myself crazy."
Ke Wenjie smiled in disbelief. "What are you imagining, my dear? Those female employees at the company—none of them are as beautiful or as virtuous as you. My heart belongs only to you; you have to believe me!"
Tong Le replied, "I do believe you, but I don't trust those women out there. Honestly, I don't want a divorce, but right now, I feel incredibly insecure, especially after what just happened when you and your mother ganged up on me. I'm really scared."
Ke Wenjie took a deep breath. He couldn't refuse her request; Tong Le was upset, and he was also concerned about the child she was carrying. Plus, with that piece of real estate still not in his hands, he felt like he had no choice but to endure whatever Tong Le threw at him.
He gritted his teeth and said, "Fine, I'll let you go back to work. But can we hold off on making any decisions about your mother moving out for now? I'll start talking to her today and see if she can take care of the household chores instead. How does that sound?"
Tong Le achieved her goal; she used this opportunity to express her demands reasonably, and she was more than happy about it. She knew very well that in this terrible marriage, leaving was not an option—Ke Wenjie would never let her go.
If she forced a divorce, given Ke Wenjie's impulsive and duplicitous nature, there was a high chance it could lead to violence. Even during the divorce process, Ke Wenjie would likely create all sorts of trouble to ruin her reputation.
Over the years, she had come to understand just how cunning Ke Wenjie could be. Given the current situation, she needed to take two steps forward and one step back. Otherwise, if Ke Wenjie caught on too quickly, her demands would be off the table.
Strike while the iron is hot; when dealing with men, it's best to act decisively.
After their negotiation concluded, Tong Le urged Ke Wenjie to hurry off to work.
Ke Wenjie left the bedroom and headed straight for Zhang Huizhi. They talked for a moment, and it was clear that Zhang Huizhi was furious.
After Ke Wenjie left, Tong Le stepped out of the room only to find Zhang Huizhi trembling with anger. "What did you say to my son? Did you threaten him with your child?"
Tong Le's gaze was cold as she remained silent.
Zhang Huizhi was taken aback. "You little vixen! I never realized you had such a dual nature! You hid it so well! And now that you're pregnant, you're starting to flaunt your power! Do you really think you can use your child as leverage? Bah!"
Tong Le smiled slightly and turned to go change her clothes.
Suddenly, Zhang Huizhi collapsed onto the floor, one hand clutching her heart while the other pounded her thigh. "I can't live like this anymore! My heart hurts! My lungs hurt! This ungrateful daughter-in-law is driving me insane! I'm not feeling well; I can't do any housework! You're sending messages through my son telling him to order me around—you're just bullying this old lady! I won't do it! I'd rather die than do it!"
Tong Le smiled faintly and said, "If you're feeling all these pains, maybe you should go see a doctor? You wouldn't want it to be something serious like cancer; that would be untreatable."
Zhang Huizhi's eyes widened in shock. "You wicked girl! You're cursing me!"
Tong Le replied calmly, "I didn't say that at all. Since you're feeling unwell in so many ways, how about this: I'll have my friend come over and take you to see a doctor. As for me, I have things to attend to, so I won't be able to stay with you."
With that, Tong Le turned back into her room while Zhang Huizhi continued hurling insults.
Even when Tong Le left the house later on, Zhang Huizhi's mouth didn't stop running.
Stepping out of her house, Tong Le called Lan Qingqing.
When the call connected, Lan Qingqing spoke first, "I was just about to call you. Where were you last night? You weren't home."
Tong Le replied, "I stayed at Tian Ling's place. I need your help with something. I'm taking Tian Ling to see a psychologist this afternoon. Are you free today? My mother-in-law isn't feeling well and needs someone to keep her company."
"Sure, no problem! I'll come over this afternoon to keep your mother-in-law company. I have the afternoon off," Lan Qingqing answered readily.
After hanging up, Tong Le smiled coldly at the darkened screen of her phone. "A bad fish and a rotten shrimp are indeed a perfect match!" she thought. Lan Qingqing was eager to impress her future mother-in-law, and Tong Le would gladly hand over this perfect opportunity to her.
Others might not know Zhang Huizhi's domineering and unreasonable nature, but Tong Le was well aware of it.
"Bad people need bad people to deal with them," she mused as she hailed a taxi and headed to Tian Ling's house.
