She would keep this house, no matter what it took. At that moment, her phone buzzed with a WeChat message from Zong Zeyu: "Find an excuse to come downstairs; I'm waiting for you outside your building." Tong Le's heart raced as she read the message on her screen.
Twenty minutes later, Tong Le took out the trash and bought batteries as an excuse to head downstairs. She moved cautiously, glancing around to ensure no one was watching her from behind or peering out from the windows above. Once she exited the community, she spotted Zong Zeyu's car.
Zong Zeyu stood by the vehicle, holding a cup of hot milk tea in his left hand and a small medical bag in his right. Tong Le approached him, feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness. "How did you find me here? Is something wrong?"
He handed her the milk tea and opened the medical bag. Then, he gently took her injured hand and applied Povidone Iodine before wrapping it with a large bandage. Tong Le stared blankly at her palm as he treated her wound, momentarily forgetting that she was even hurt.
Zong Zeyu said nothing, quietly tending to her injury. He inserted a straw into the milk tea cup and nudged it toward her lips. Under the streetlight, he looked even more handsome and masculine than usual, especially in his silent demeanor.
Tong Le took a big sip of the milk tea and said carelessly, "Did you come all this way just to bandage me? Why are you being so nice to me?"
Zong Zeyu looked at her silly expression and replied helplessly, "Sometimes I really doubt whether you truly hate Ke Jie. You should be filled with rage, but you don’t seem like someone who’s out for revenge."
Tong Le laughed and said, "What should I do then? Cry every day? I’ve had my moments like that, but I got through them. Especially when I first found out about Ke Jie and Lan Qingqing's affair. I watched those videos of them together, clenching my fists until my nails dug into my skin."
She extended her palm toward him. "Look here; there's a small scar. I even thought about ending it all back then, but at the last moment, I regretted it. If I died, it would mean I lost."
Zong Zeyu spoke up, "If you want, you can use me to punish Ke Jie."
Tong Le replied, "Why would I do that? You're not me! Besides, I owe you my life; you've helped me so many times that it's embarrassing."
She countered playfully, "Tell me the truth: do you want to keep that property all to yourself? Is that why you're being so nice to me? If you really want it, just take it! I can give it to you; you're my savior; I’d give you anything."
Zong Zeyu said seriously, "What if I want both you and the property?"
Tong Le gazed silently into his eyes. She sensed some feelings stirring within her but dared not confront them directly or acknowledge them. She felt unworthy of such emotions and was terrified of being hurt again.
Love is elusive when it's vague and unclear; it's hard to grasp and easy to misinterpret—and of course, it's also easy to get hurt. She had been deeply wounded before; she couldn't afford to be vulnerable again.
Tong Le casually remarked, "Sure! My life is yours; without you, I might have died in that fire at the library long ago."
Zong Zeyu sensed that Tong Le was deliberately avoiding deeper issues. He decided not to push further; he would take his time.
He took a key out of his pocket and handed it to Tong Le. "This is for you to borrow."
Tong Le looked puzzled. "What is it?"
Zong Zeyu replied, "It's a key to an empty property under my name. You can use it as your private space. Whether you want to be alone or meet friends, you won’t have to rely on Tian Ling's place anymore."
Tong Le stared at the key, realizing how much she needed a place like this—a quiet sanctuary for solitude, a space to conspire with friends, and a clean escape from Ke Jie and Zhang Huizhi.
Zong Zeyu added, "If you don’t want it, I’ll just rent the house out."
Tong Le quickly snatched the key. "I want it! Once I have some money or sell that piece of land, I’ll pay you rent!"
Zong Zeyu smiled. "Remember our agreement? When I take you to see that land, you might find it hard to part with it."
