She shouted at the passersby around her, "Is there a fire extinguisher? Help! There’s someone inside!"
Some kind-hearted individuals went to look for a fire extinguisher, but no one dared to step forward to help. Tong Le was scared too, but she knew that the golden time for rescue was just a minute or two. If the car exploded, the driver would be lost for good.
Tong Le rushed forward, forcefully pulling open the car door. The glass shattered and cut her arm, blood gushing from the wound.
She saw the male driver slumped in the driver's seat, unconscious. "Wake up! Can you move?" she shouted at him.
There was no response from Hou Yi; the brief moment of unconsciousness left him completely unaware of what had happened.
Tong Le grabbed Hou Yi's arm, summoning all her strength to drag him out of the car. The damaged vehicle began to emit sporadic explosions. As she pulled and shouted, "Wake up!"
Hou Yi kept his eyes closed, his mind in a haze. His ears rang as if he had experienced a violent explosion. He could hear the woman’s cries but couldn’t make out what she was saying; her voice seemed to penetrate through thick walls, trying to break through but ultimately blocked out.
He felt someone desperately pulling at him but couldn’t sense any pain. In his daze, he thought he might die here, just like years ago in that car accident with his beloved parents. They had been driving out for a family outing on his birthday, and his mother had prepared a birthday party at their villa.
He had thought he would receive his favorite computer as a gift and enjoy the cake his mother made for him. But that day, enemies had hired someone to kill them, orchestrating a deliberate car crash. Their vehicle collided with a truck carrying sand; it flipped several times and crashed hard onto the ground, igniting into flames.
He remembered his father dying right before him; he remembered his mother using her last ounce of strength to pull him from the inferno. He recalled her holding him tightly, shielding him from the searing heat of the flames.
That day marked the darkest moment of his life. From then on, he lost not only his parents but also kindness and warmth. His world was left with nothing but hatred and darkness.
In this moment, memories surged in his mind; he seemed to see his mother again, but she was saying, "Don’t come here, my child. Go on, my child."
Hou Yi slowly opened his eyes. The first thing he saw was this woman named Tong Le, dragging his limp body to the roadside. A deafening roar filled his ears as he felt a wave of warmth enveloping him—the car exploded into flames while he narrowly escaped death.
He looked at Tong Le, who was covered in dirt and ash from trying to save him, still shouting at him, "Don’t move! Stay still! You’ve lost so much blood; the ambulance is coming!"
Hou Yi blinked slowly; words failed him as everything blurred into the raging fire around them. His eyes filled with blood; what he saw of Tong Le was amidst a sea of blood.
Years ago, in his mother’s tight embrace, he survived; now he saw her again in a sea of fire and blood.
He thought that if it were possible, dying like this wouldn’t be so bad; otherwise, this lonely life would remain forever shrouded in darkness.
In a haze of consciousness, caught between life and death, he chose death. He slowly opened his mouth and said, "Mom, take me away."
On the roadside, Tong Le was covered in dark ash and bloodstains. She sat on the ground, propping Hou Yi's head up with her legs. Her palm pressed against his wound, and she had torn a large portion of her skirt to create a makeshift cloth to staunch the flow of blood.
Having cared for her parents in the hospital for three years, she knew how to perform first aid. She understood that the difference between life and death could be determined in just half an hour.
She heard Hou Yi utter the word "Mom," and she knew he must be filled with fear and dread. Tong Le spoke up, "Don't be afraid. It's over now. Don't be afraid."
