"Get to work, Jiang Zhichao!" Tong Le called out to the man who was rambling on. "We need to deliver the documents to the Zong Shi Yan Tuan this afternoon. Are you ready?"
Jiang Zhichao didn't even bother to look up; he plopped down at his workstation and began to focus seriously. "Right away, Sister Tong! I promise I'll get it done!"
Tong Le smiled and then headed to Ke Wenjie's office. She knocked on the door and entered. Upon seeing Tong Le, Ke Wenjie’s smile was much softer than usual.
"I specifically told my mom this morning to let you sleep in before coming to the office," Ke Wenjie said as he stood up. "I was a bit harsh last night; please don’t take it to heart."
He stepped forward, wanting to give Tong Le a hug, but she sidestepped him and picked up some photocopied documents from the desk. "These are the project materials for Zong Shi Yan Tuan, right? I'm planning to meet with the person in charge at Yi Sheng Construction Company from the Hou Family in a couple of days to discuss the building material supply cooperation. Have you contacted anyone from Yi Sheng Architecture?"
Ke Wenjie recalled, "Not yet. I'll reach out this afternoon." He waved it off casually, "There are plenty of suppliers; there's no rush."
Tong Le reminded him, "You should do it as soon as possible. The construction site is about to start; I can only relax once everything is settled. Otherwise, it's just talk on paper."
At that moment, a little thought popped into Tong Le's mind. While organizing the documents on her desk, she casually said, "Tian Wen shared an interesting gossip with me."
As Ke Wenjie brewed tea, he responded, "What gossip? You women love discussing other people's business when you get together; it's not a good habit. People should focus more on their own development and live their own lives instead of getting involved in others' affairs."
Tong Le couldn't help but scoff inwardly at Ke Wenjie’s preachy attitude; how could he say such things without feeling embarrassed?
Suppressing her disdain for him, Tong Le fabricated a story. "Wen told me about a male friend of hers who has been happily married for many years. Recently, his wife got pregnant, but then she discovered that her husband had been cheating on her with someone else who is also pregnant—both women are expecting at the same time! Now this guy doesn't know how to choose."
Turning back to look at Ke Wenjie, she asked, "If it were you, how would you choose?"
Ke Wenjie hesitated for two seconds before answering, "I wouldn't cheat."
Tong Le pressed on, "Just imagine you're that man—both your wife and your mistress are pregnant. What would you do?"
Ke Wenjie found himself in a dilemma. It was like if Tong Le and Lan Qingqing were both pregnant at the same time; although he didn't love either woman much, he valued his wife's family background and assets while also enjoying the allure of his mistress. Of course, he cared about both unborn children too.
Raising an eyebrow, Ke Wenjie reiterated his earlier stance: "I wouldn't cheat, so I can't answer that."
Tong Le felt disappointed. She gathered up the stack of documents and said, "I'm going out to meet a friend and then I'll head over to Zong Shi Yan Tuan for a meeting later. Call me if you need anything."
Ke Wenjie acknowledged her as he watched her leave the office.
After Tong Le left, Ke Wenjie pondered her hypothetical scenario but didn’t think too much of it; after all, Tong Le wasn’t a sensitive or suspicious woman. If she were, she wouldn’t have been oblivious to his infidelity all these years.
However, he did feel puzzled about why Tong Le had never mentioned anything regarding that piece of property. He had thought she would bring it up herself, but ever since both her parents passed away, she hadn’t mentioned it at all.
He felt a bit annoyed and wondered if Tong Le was deliberately avoiding the topic.
Taking out his phone, he sent a WeChat message to Lan Qingqing: "You mentioned helping me inquire about that piece of land last time—any updates? Has Tong Le talked to you about Xiang Dai?"
Lan Qingqing replied: "Once you get that property, will you divorce Tong Le and marry me?"
Ke Wenjie looked at the words on his phone screen and scoffed disdainfully. He thought that Lan Qingqing was truly delusional; after all, they had only slept together for a few years, and she really believed she held some significant place in his life.
Ke Wenjie replied, "Of course, once all the trivial matters are settled, I will definitely be with you."
