Ke Jie looked at Tong Le with suspicion. "Did you say something to Yi Sheng's people? How did our business cooperation, which was supposed to be based on revolutionary friendship, turn into a regular collaboration?"
Tong Le replied firmly, "I truly do not support this cooperation if it is based on the other party's massive losses, allowing us to profit greatly. I wouldn't feel right about making money that way."
Before she could finish her sentence, Tong Le watched as a sudden fire ignited in Ke Jie’s eyes, a blaze that seemed ready to turn her to ashes. Then she saw Ke Jie raise his hand, clearly aimed at her face.
In that critical moment, Tong Le glared and shouted, "Are you going to hit me, Ke Jie? For a deal you can't profit from, you want to resort to domestic violence?"
Her shout pierced the air and startled Zhang Huizhi.
This was the first time Ke Jie had seen such a fierce side of Tong Le, and it caught him completely off guard. He had intended to strike her; instinctively, he wanted to teach her a lesson with force. He knew it was wrong and tried to hold back, but Tong Le's warning shout overtook his reason.
Ke Jie was filled with surprise and disbelief; this was the first time Tong Le had yelled at him.
Zhang Huizhi was also taken aback but quickly regained her composure. She couldn't stand seeing her precious son being intimidated by this woman. In a rush, she stepped forward and grabbed Tong Le by the collar, attempting to push her against the wall.
This time, Tong Le's resolve was even stronger than before. She didn’t yell at Zhang Huizhi because she knew some people wouldn’t listen to reason. Her focus remained solely on Ke Jie. As she was forced back, she pressed on him again. "If your mother dares to touch me! I will call the police and report domestic violence! I’ll divorce you!"
This was the first time Ke Jie had seen Tong Le lose her temper so fiercely; it wasn’t just anger but a threatening stance.
Ke Jie felt fear creep in as his mind raced. He tried hard to set aside his personal feelings and resentment, quickly weighing the economic pros and cons. He hadn’t sold the house yet; he hadn’t taken possession of the properties under Tong Le’s name; he hadn’t fully transferred control of Tongshan Real Estate Company.
He couldn’t get divorced.
In a rush, Ke Jie stepped forward and pulled Zhang Huizhi away, pushing her toward the sofa.
Zhang Huizhi was stunned. "Son, how could you side with this woman! I’m your mother!"
Ke Jie didn’t have time to explain; he had to make a choice in this critical moment. He chose Tong Le—he chose money.
Tong Le stood expressionless in place and seized the moment to accuse him. "I can understand your impulsiveness due to work earlier, but your mother has repeatedly challenged my limits! How long have I endured her for you? I don’t believe you don’t know. If you want to continue living with me, make sure she moves out completely!"
Zhang Huizhi immediately got up from the floor, furious and intent on killing Tong Le. She grabbed a glass plate from the coffee table and aimed it at Tong Le.
In an instant, Ke Jie turned around and seized Zhang Huizhi’s arm, shouting, "Mom! Are you crazy? Do you even know what you're doing?"
Zhang Huizhi gasped for breath, tears welling up in her eyes.
Ke Jie looked close to breaking down but forced himself to hold back as he controlled Zhang Huizhi’s movements before turning back to face Tong Le.
Just as he was about to plead for leniency, Tong Le coldly replied, "Otherwise, we’ll get a divorce."
She rolled up her sleeve, revealing a bandaged area stained with blood from earlier that morning when she had been stitched up. "This was just a minor injury initially," she said casually. "But because your mother forced me into doing housework, it turned into something serious! Domestic violence comes in many forms; your mother’s cold treatment is one of them. If you continue to side with her, I’ll call the police right now and say that this injury was caused by your mother."
Zhang Huizhi was about to explode with anger, stomping her feet in frustration, even reaching the point of jumping around in a frenzy. "She's lying! I didn't hurt her! I didn't! Son, she's lying!"
At that moment, Ke Jie found it hard to believe Zhang Huizhi. He had witnessed how she treated Tong Le, and he knew all too well that her cold violence was just the mildest form of abuse. Back when they had just married, Zhang Huizhi had even made Tong Le clean the outside glass of their high-rise apartment without any safety measures, risking her life with every step she took.
Ke Jie understood that during that glass-cleaning incident, Zhang Huizhi had ordered Tong Le to do it with the intention of letting her fall to her death. This way, she could effortlessly inherit the entire Tong family fortune.
Such incidents had occurred multiple times, and at that time, Tong Le had been naive, completely unaware of Zhang Huizhi's malice towards her.
Ke Jie found it remarkable that despite facing countless dangerous situations orchestrated by Zhang Huizhi, Tong Le always managed to escape disaster at critical moments.
Therefore, he believed that the injury on Tong Le's arm had worsened because of Zhang Huizhi; this was highly likely to be true. In contrast, he found his mother’s words to be far less credible.
Now, Ke Jie had to make a choice between his wife and his mother. He could only choose the one who would bring him the greatest benefit.
Turning to Zhang Huizhi, he said firmly, "Mom, you need to move out tomorrow. I'll find you a place. Right now, Tong Le is pregnant and her emotions are unstable; everything must revolve around her and the baby. I hope you can understand."
