The farce ultimately concluded with Tong Le's brief victory. No matter how Zhang Huizhi wailed and pleaded, Ke Wenjie was resolute in his decision to have Zhang Huizhi move out of the house. Ke Wenjie was motivated by self-interest; he could not afford to pressure Tong Le while she was pregnant. He had heard that hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy could lead women to behave in unexpected ways.
Tong Le was well aware that this commotion would accelerate many events. Zhang Huizhi would not back down easily, and Ke Wenjie would be even more cautious around her. The battles ahead would only become more arduous.
The next morning, Tong Le opened her eyes to a quiet home. There was no sound of Zhang Huizhi watching television or chatting on the phone. Ke Wenjie was also absent.
Relishing the peace, Tong Le hummed a little tune as she headed to the bathroom. At that moment, her phone buzzed with a WeChat message from Ke Wenjie: "I took Mom out. I promise you that until you give birth, both you and Mom will stay here. When you need her help with the baby later, we can bring her back. Don't be too willful; take some time today to call Mom and apologize."
Tong Le replied promptly, "No problem."
Meanwhile, at Lan Qingqing's place, she had just woken up when she heard a slow and careful knocking at the door. She got out of bed and peered through the peephole to see Mo Kai Liang standing outside.
Mo Kai Liang lived right below her, a neighbor arranged by Ke Wenjie.
When Lan Qingqing opened the door, Mo Kai Liang appeared energetic and well-prepared. Half an hour earlier, he had taken great care in getting ready, shaving twice and ensuring his clothes were perfectly pressed without a wrinkle.
He wore a suit chosen by Ke Wenjie and stood straight at Lan Qingqing's doorstep, holding two large porcelain bowls covered with plastic wrap—one in each hand.
Inside the bowls was breakfast he had specially prepared, hoping to share it with Lan Qingqing.
Lan Qingqing, dressed in pajamas and wrapped in a small blanket, stepped aside and invited him in. "What time did you wake up? You even made breakfast! It smells like green beans?"
Mo Kai Liang smiled brightly and replied, "Yes! Green beans, potatoes, and corn—my specialty! You mentioned your cooking skills are average, so I thought I'd whip something up."
He placed the bowls in the kitchen and glanced toward He Shui Xian's room. Last night, during a brief visit to Lan Qingqing's home, he had learned about Tong Le's condition—paralyzed and bedridden—and felt a surge of sympathy for Lan Qingqing. He thought her life was truly difficult! Such a beautiful, gentle, hardworking girl burdened with someone like Tong Le was unfortunate enough; on top of that, she had suffered greatly in love!
In his mind, every girl hoped to marry well; no one aspired to be a mistress! He convinced himself that it must be Ke Wenjie who had deceived Lan Qingqing. How could such a kind-hearted girl ever instigate trouble in someone else's family?
He believed that love was beyond one's control and that Lan Qingqing was indeed a victim of circumstance.
The more he thought about it, the more heartbroken he felt. As he set the table, he asked Lan Qingqing, "Is there anything your mom needs me to do? I could help with... cleaning up after her if you both don't mind."
Lan Qingqing froze at his suggestion. It sounded absurd for a man to offer to help clean up after her mother. But given Mo Kai Liang's straightforward nature, it wasn't entirely surprising.
She was utterly exhausted from caring for He Shui Xian—so much so that she felt nauseated every time she had to do it again! Each time she cleaned up after her mother made her want to throw those dirty things right back at He Shui Xian’s face!
Suddenly, a big fool appeared, ready to help her mother with everything. She couldn't have asked for more! She didn't care whether He Shui Xian minded or not; after all, there are no filial children by the bedside of a long-term illness. When one can't even take care of themselves, what dignity is there to uphold?
Lan Qingqing smiled awkwardly. "How embarrassing for you, a grown man, to take care of my mother."
Mo Kai Liang immediately took off his jacket, eager to help. "I can do it. You go ahead and eat; I'll take care of your mom."
Lan Qingqing let Mo Kai Liang do as he pleased and felt his sincerity. This simple country boy was willing to do anything to win her heart.
She leisurely enjoyed her breakfast while from the bedroom came the continuous sounds of He Shui Xian's curses, accusing Lan Qingqing of treating her like an animal rather than a human being.
Occasionally, Mo Kai Liang's explanations could be heard in the house. He worked diligently and quickly, avoiding what he shouldn't see and properly attending to what needed cleaning, doing even better than Lan Qingqing herself.
Lan Qingqing often took a lackadaisical approach to her tasks, which had resulted in He Shui Xian developing bedsores.
Mo Kai Liang turned He Shui Xian in bed and kindly advised, "Auntie, I’ll come by regularly to help you turn over. Your bedsores will get better."
At that moment, while eating breakfast, Lan Qingqing heard unusual noises at the front door. It seemed that someone had moved into the house across the way. She had been living here for quite some time, and that place had always been vacant.
Peering through the peephole at her door, she was surprised to see Ke Wenjie and Zhang Huizhi!
Without hesitation, Lan Qingqing opened the door, and Ke Wenjie and Zhang Huizhi turned around.
Zhang Huizhi was bending down, pushing Li Xiang in a wheelchair while Ke Wenjie had just opened the door to their new house.
Lan Qingqing exclaimed in surprise, "Ke Wenjie? Auntie? What brings you here?"
Zhang Huizhi looked equally bewildered; it was quite a coincidence. She had been kicked out by her daughter-in-law, and her son had found her a new place to live—right across from Lan Qingqing!
Ke Wenjie glanced at Lan Qingqing and then gently pushed Zhang Huizhi's shoulder, saying, "Mom, you go in first."
