Hou Yi watched as Tong Le devoured all the Xiao Long Bao from the takeout bag in front of Zong Zeyu, her mouth covered in grease and her cheeks puffed up like the Ding Dong Cat on her pajamas, round and chubby. He couldn't help but smile, a smile he didn't even realize he was wearing.
Tong Le chattered away to Zong Zeyu, but Hou Yi couldn't hear a word. To him, she sounded like a little trumpet, babbling endlessly. Several times, she burst into laughter in front of Zong Zeyu, and while Hou Yi felt a twinge of disdain, his body betrayed him. He took out his phone and snapped pictures of Tong Le—capturing her joyous laughter and the moment she looked like a little piglet.
All those photos were beautiful. The sky had not yet darkened; the sunset painted the clouds in fiery hues that mirrored his burning heart, unaware of its own heat. The stunning light illuminated Tong Le, making her appear like golden wheat swaying resiliently in the wind. He now fully understood what Tong Le meant when she said that a lover is nurtured in one's heart. She may not be wheat, but she was certainly golden.
For some reason, it felt as if he had found in someone else's love the essence of what he once cherished about life—the image of his parents together, filled with small quarrels, embraces, and confessions; his mother making beef pies for his father, who would give a thumbs up after taking the first bite; memories of him as a child painting by the sunset window while snippets of movies featuring couples dancing played on TV; his father taking his mother's hand and dancing with her in the living room.
That day, he held a tiny paintbrush and captured the likeness of his father and mother on canvas.
Hou Yi withdrew his gaze and lit another cigarette, turning his back to Tong Le and Zong Zeyu in the community as he leaned against the railing. He tilted his head back to gaze at the endless stretch of colorful twilight and beyond, while on the other side of the railing lay the happiness he longed for at that moment.
Meanwhile, Tong Le continued to chatter away with Zong Zeyu without pause. She spoke about Si Li, then about Lan Qingqing and Mo Kai Liang, and even mentioned how Hou Yi had given Ke Jie a good beating.
Tong Le was overjoyed as she waved her little fists, mumbling that if she had been there when it happened, she would have thrown a few punches herself!
Zong Zeyu pondered for a moment before asking, "Hou Yi beat up Ke Jie? Was it just because of the collaboration between our companies?"
Tong Le nodded. "You don't need to worry; it's all been handled. Hou Yi from Yi Sheng Architecture is just a strange person. I try not to provoke him."
Zong Zeyu's expression turned serious. "Just breach the contract; I'll cover the penalty."
Tong Le shook her head firmly. "No! I'll handle it myself. Even though you're very wealthy, money shouldn't be spent like that."
"Let's head back; it's getting dark," she added.
Zong Zeyu remembered something. "In a few days, my mother wants to invite Dao Wen over for dinner. You should come along."
Tong Le thought for a moment and nodded. "Sure! Are you trying to set up your brother with Dao Wen? Turning fake into real?"
Zong Zeyu shrugged casually. "That's up to Zong Jin himself. If he doesn't step up, what can I do?"
With that said, Zong Zeyu opened his arms toward Tong Le. "Aren't you going to reward me with a hug?"
Tong Le frowned and stepped back, thinking to herself that since she was in a good mood today, she should avoid any trouble. Still, she thanked him for the Xiao Long Bao and mentioned that she would take Tian Ling there next time.
Zong Zeyu wore a doting smile. "Go upstairs. I'll watch you."
Dressed in her Ding Dong Cat pajamas, Tong Le turned and headed upstairs. On her way up, she received a WeChat message from Hou Yi.
Hou Yi wrote: "If I wanted to pursue you right now, what should I do to win your favor and get you to be with me quickly? I'm very serious; give me an answer. I want to take a shortcut."
Tong Le stepped out of the elevator and stood at her front door, looking down at Hou Yi's message. This guy really was persistent and had a screw loose.
After thinking for a moment, she sent him a location and replied, "This is the shortcut. Just follow the navigation to get there."
Hou Yi responded: "??? I meant a shortcut to pursue you! Why are you sending me a location? If I drive there, will that mean I can pursue you? Is that what you mean?"
Tong Le replied: "Well, if you drive over, you'll find out."
Feeling too lazy to respond further, she turned off her screen and entered her home.
In the bedroom, Ke Jie complained loudly, "What took you so long? You went downstairs twice; what were you doing?"
Tong Le casually replied, "Tian Ling came to find me. We chatted for a bit."
Meanwhile, Hou Yi got into his car. He had genuinely intended to drive to the location Tong Le sent him to check it out. This time he was smarter; he specifically looked up the place online only to find out it was a dead-end street—a cul-de-sac!
He felt like he could strangle Tong Le. So if he wanted to pursue her, it would lead him nowhere! It was absolutely ridiculous!
Furious, Hou Yi slammed his palm on the steering wheel just as he saw Zong Zeyu's car leaving the community.
Watching the Rolls Royce slowly exit the neighborhood reminded him of how Tong Le had just been making eyes at Zong Zeyu. He felt extremely displeased.
Without thinking twice, he pressed down on the accelerator and charged toward Zong Zeyu's Rolls Royce.
