Wen smiled and said, "There are plenty of people like that. Don't you think the Public Security Department goes all out to promote anti-fraud awareness for a reason? It's because there are too many people who are tempted by cheap deals, thinking they are the lucky exceptions. Why do so many people gamble? It's all about hoping to win big with a small investment. Besides, with so much money sitting in Zhang Huizhi's account, while others can make their money work for them, hers just sits there stagnant. She must feel like she's at a disadvantage. Over time, this feeling will only make her want to put her idle money to work even more."
Tong Le added, "That's the gambler's fallacy. Zhang Huizhi is someone who thinks too highly of herself; she can't resist temptation. Moreover, the money she had before came too easily. She believes her son can just talk and bring in large sums of money. In reality, the money Ke Jie transferred to her was stolen from Tongshan Real Estate or secretly moved elsewhere. Zhang Huizhi has never experienced the hardships of making big money, so she doesn't have a strong sense of risk awareness. Additionally, her interactions with Aunt Li have always been face-to-face, which makes them more credible. If it were online communication through a screen, she wouldn't be so easily deceived."
Li Hongmei suddenly said with caution, "I need to raise my anti-fraud awareness from now on!"
Tong Le chuckled and replied, "That's a must! But don't worry too much about this matter; the money in Zhang Huizhi's account belongs to my parents. Using it is my way of honoring their memory."
Tong Le sighed quietly; she was just a bit surprised that Zhang Huizhi had as much as twenty million in her hands. It made her realize how many company assets Ke Jie had sold off behind her back.
Li Hongmei said, "Lele, Auntie knows that what she's doing is good. Don't worry; I won't be troubled by this matter. Even if the police come looking for me one day, I won't be scared!"
At that moment, Tong Le felt a pang of bitterness in her heart. She had always thought her fate was tragic, but at this moment, she felt lucky—lucky that during her hardest times, the people around her supported her.
Just then, Tong Le's phone rang; it was Tian Ling.
Tong Le answered quickly and said, "Lingling, I've already picked up Auntie. Don't worry; I'm taking her to you right now."
On the other end of the line, Tian Ling was ecstatic. "Tong Le! Did you have Zong Zeyu do this? He just told me he bought the apartment I'm living in! He gave it to me! He said he didn't want any money because he helped your mom out! What should I do? Should I accept this apartment? I'm going crazy! This place costs over six hundred thousand!"
Tong Le was stunned; she had never expected Zong Zeyu would do something like this.
Wen smiled knowingly as she drove and explained, "I mentioned to Zong Zeyu that Aunt Li helped you."
Wen confessed without hesitation and added, "Oh, and that investment project's documents and contracts were also handled with Zong Zeyu's help; he got his legal team to assist me."
Wen blinked playfully and asked, "You won't blame me for this, will you? I bet you won't."
Tong Le took a deep breath. Everything happening now was unexpected but good news; however, she felt deeply indebted to Zong Zeyu.
She had originally planned to give Tian Ling and Aunt Li each a red envelope with around ten thousand as a token of gratitude for their help—regardless of whether things turned out well or not—because the risks involved were not small. Although she had prepared for the worst-case scenario where everything could fall apart and she would take all the blame alone without dragging Tian Ling or Aunt Li into it.
But now, Zong Zeyu's actions seemed to provide greater security for her and everyone involved.
She had always thought that she would be the one holding everything together in the end; now she felt that it was actually Zong Zeyu who quietly contributed both financially and with effort.
Tong Le could sense Tian Ling's joy over the phone. Previously, Tian Ling had mentioned more than once that once she saved enough money, she would buy the apartment where she lived.
However, saving up took years without achieving that goal while housing prices kept rising and living expenses increased. Tian Ling had stopped bringing up buying a house altogether.
Now Zong Zeyu fulfilled Tian Ling's wish simply because he helped Tong Le.
Tong Le didn't want to reject Tian Ling over the phone; she wanted her to be happy.
She spoke into the phone, "Zong Zeyu has already bought this apartment for you; just accept it! After all, he's already given it to you—no need to hesitate!"
On the phone, Tian Ling was so agitated that she seemed almost frantic, while in the car, Li Hongmei couldn't help but shed tears.
Tong Le hung up on Tian Ling and opened the car door to step out. She dialed Zong Zeyu's number.
The call connected quickly.
Tong Le spoke, "Thank you for helping me, but I will pay you back for the money used to buy the house. Once I sort out my family matters, I'll return it to you."
Zong Zeyu replied gently, "You don't need to pay me back; it was my choice. Besides, I didn't spend any money on that house. It was a debt taken on by a partner who couldn't cover their costs, and I merely helped out."
His tone softened as he added, "I've missed you."
