Lan Qingqing sat across the table, her teeth clenched in frustration. She didn’t want to part with her hard-earned money, the savings she had painstakingly accumulated. Although she had received quite a bit from Ke Jie, every time she asked for money, he only gave her small amounts. At first, she thought Ke Jie was generous, but after meeting Hou Yi, she realized that Ke Jie was just a piece of trash, just like his mother—two pieces of trash.
After dinner, Lan Qingqing hesitated about whether to lend money. After much contemplation, she couldn’t bring herself to do it. What if Zhang Huizhi didn’t pay her back? Even though they were family, Zhang Huizhi acted as if it was a given when asking for money. Why should she?
Lan Qingqing went to the restroom and secretly called Ke Jie.
When the call connected, she spoke nervously, “Dear, I need to tell you something. You must not let on that I’m the one who told you. Just now, your mom asked me to lend her money—thirty thousand yuan right off the bat. I remember you telling me before that your mom has plenty of money. Why is she borrowing from me now?”
On the other end of the line, Ke Jie sounded confused. “My mom borrowed thirty thousand from you? Just now?”
“Yes,” Lan Qingqing replied. “At the dinner table. She even insisted I shouldn’t tell you. Could it be that she’s been scammed online?”
Ke Jie took a deep breath. “I’ll come over right away. I told her to prepare thirty thousand in cash this morning as a backup. Why would she borrow from you? The ten million from selling the house is in her account; there’s no way she would have made any investments that quickly.”
After hanging up, Lan Qingqing deliberately delayed her exit by locking herself in the restroom.
Outside the restroom, Zhang Huizhi knocked impatiently on the door. “Lan Qingqing, when are you going to transfer the money to me?”
From inside, Lan Qingqing shouted back, “Auntie, I have an upset stomach and need to stay here for a while. I don’t have my phone with me; can you wait until I’m done?”
Zhang Huizhi was anxious. “Where did you leave your phone? Just tell me and give me your online banking password so I can transfer it myself.”
Inside the restroom, Lan Qingqing couldn’t help but laugh at how clueless this woman was. Did she really think she could just use her phone to transfer money? Did she truly believe that thirty thousand yuan belonged to her? Lan Qingqing wasn’t even married to Ke Jie yet! How could this insufferable Zhang Huizhi think she could control everything?
Lan Qingqing felt both angry and amused as she shouted through the door, “I forgot where I put it! Just wait a moment; I’ll be out as soon as I finish.”
She lingered in the restroom for half an hour—just enough time for Ke Jie to arrive at the apartment.
As soon as Ke Jie stepped inside, Lan Qingqing opened the restroom door.
Seeing Ke Jie arrive, Zhang Huizhi became nervous. “Son, why are you here? Aren’t you supposed to be at work?”
Ke Jie didn’t betray Lan Qingqing; instead, he turned to Zhang Huizhi and said calmly, “I suddenly have an urgent matter and need ten thousand in cash for some quick turnover. Since I was driving by, I thought I’d stop by. Mom, grab your ID and bank card; we’re going to the bank.”
Zhang Huizhi was startled. “What do you mean ten thousand? Didn’t you say you needed thirty thousand? Why is it suddenly only ten thousand?”
Ke Jie maintained a calm demeanor; he suspected that Zhang Huizhi must have used the money in her account for something else; otherwise, she wouldn’t be reacting this way.
He countered her question: “Is there a problem with your funds? Didn’t you say you hadn’t deposited the money from selling the house into a fixed account yet?”
Zhang Huizhi stammered, “Son, if you suddenly need money like this, you should have told me in advance! And why are you asking for ten thousand right away?”
