Ke Wei Qiang immediately saw through Zhang Huizhi's scheme. He pointed at her retreating figure and exclaimed, "Is it you again who has caused trouble for our son? You wasteful woman, just wait and see if I don't beat you to death today!"
He picked up a vase from the coffee table, ready to take drastic action against Zhang Huizhi.
Ke Wenjie, tired of the scene, stepped in to stop his father. Grabbing Ke Wei Qiang's wrist firmly, he reminded him, "Dad, I brought you to the city to discuss how to handle this situation. The money has been swindled away, and I have nothing left. Even if you argue with Mom, it won't bring back that twenty million."
Ke Wei Qiang was frantic. "Twenty million lost to fraud! What good is it for you to come to me? Go find the police! Get a lawyer! Aren't lawyers supposed to be good these days? Sue them! Do you expect me, an old man, to beg for that twenty million?"
Seeing his father's agitation, Ke Wenjie suggested, "Dad, let's talk in the bedroom."
He led Ke Wei Qiang into the bedroom.
In the living room, Zhang Huizhi felt as if she had just escaped death. She collapsed onto the sofa, gasping for breath.
Jin Feng spoke up beside her, "How did you lose twenty million? If I had that much money, I could live comfortably for several lifetimes!"
Zhang Huizhi rolled her eyes at him. "What business is it of yours? You've never seen real money! Twenty million could let you live comfortably? Do you even know how much houses cost around here? That idiot Ke Wei Qiang wants to buy a villa; just one unfinished villa costs at least twenty million! He should consider whether he even deserves to live in a villa! If it were up to me, people like you should just go back to your rural homes! People like you are only fit for a simple house!"
The more she insulted him, the more she wanted to continue. She looked Jin Feng up and down and added, "You look so pathetic; your clothes are all worn out. If someone didn't know better, they'd think you were a beggar on the street! You scavenge for other people's discarded trash to eat; that's your miserable life—perfectly matched with someone like Ke Wei Qiang!"
After saying this, Zhang Huizhi stood up, too disdainful to speak further with them and left the house, heading straight for Lan Qingqing's place across the street.
Jin Feng stood there, absorbing every insult and curse thrown at her. She remembered each word vividly.
In truth, when they came to the city this time, Ke Wei Qiang hadn't intended to bring her along; it was she who had begged him relentlessly until he agreed.
She knew she had little ability; after her ex-husband passed away, she had worked hard to support their daughter’s education with all her strength. She sold their house and land back home to pay off debts and used the remaining money entirely for her daughter's tuition and living expenses.
Jin Feng lacked any earning potential; having never made money before, she spent her days cleaning and cooking at home without any worries, which made her seem light-hearted compared to the scheming Zhang Huizhi.
Accompanying Ke Wei Qiang into the city served two purposes: one was to see her daughter studying there; the other was her desire to climb higher in life and explore opportunities beyond rural life.
She understood clearly why she partnered with Ke Wei Qiang—his temper could protect her and he was willing to spend money on her. Moreover, he was one of the best suitors among those who pursued her back then; after all, his son had become a big boss in the city and would not have to worry about food or clothing in the future.
As Jin Feng watched Zhang Huizhi leave their home, her expression suddenly changed. The earlier caution and timidity vanished as she wandered around the small house. She found herself quite satisfied with it; if she could live in such a place for free, she would be very willing.
In the bedroom, Ke Wei Qiang was pulling at his hair in frustration.
Ke Wenjie explained, "This is roughly what happened: Mom was swindled out of twenty million. I've reported it to the police and contacted a lawyer; whether we can recover that money depends on our capabilities. I didn't come here asking you to help me collect debts; I have other plans."
Ke Wenjie’s gaze sharpened slightly, and Ke Wei Qiang sensed the gravity of the situation.
“Speak up, son. I will definitely help in any way I can,” Ke Wei Qiang said.
“Right now, Tong Le is threatening to divorce me. She wants to fight me over the twenty million. Although I manage Tongshan Real Estate, it still legally belongs to Tong Le, including the houses we sold before and the car I’m currently driving. Initially, I planned to gradually sideline Tong Le. I secretly diverted resources from Tongshan Real Estate and managed to accumulate two million. But now, just when I was about to finalize everything, it all fell apart. If Tong Le divorces me now, I fear I’ll end up with nothing,” Ke Wenjie explained.
Ke Wei Qiang grew anxious. “Son, you can’t let that happen! Doesn’t Tong Le love you? Her wanting a divorce must be out of anger! Can’t you just talk her down?”
Ke Wenjie frowned seriously. “This time is different; I feel she has changed.”
“So what do you plan to do?” Ke Wei Qiang asked.
After a brief pause, Ke Wenjie’s tone was colder than ever. “Dad, do you remember how you helped me when Tong Le’s parents both ended up bedridden?”
Ke Wei Qiang hesitated, finding it hard to speak. “Why bring this up? Didn’t we agree never to mention it again?”
He avoided Ke Wenjie’s gaze, unable to hide his unease.
“Dad, Tong Le’s parents are dead now; that secret will never be known. This time, I still need your help—help me get rid of Tong Le by any means necessary. Or like before, make her suffer from a chronic illness that leads to a slow death. Only then will I be free from everything I have today,” Ke Wenjie stated bluntly.
Ke Wei Qiang looked troubled. “That’s not murder! I just used some means to make Tong Le’s parents bedridden! Your situation is different now; you’re clearly asking me to kill Tong Le!”
He shook his head in refusal while sitting on the edge of the bed. “No way; that’s illegal!”
Ke Wenjie pressed on, “Once it’s done, I’ll bring you and Jin Feng to the city and buy you both a villa. I keep my promises.”
