All night long, Zhang Huizhi couldn't close her eyes. In the pitch darkness, she was so unafraid that she simply fell asleep at Lan Qingqing's house. However, Lan Qingqing, terrified that the recently deceased He Shui Xian might return as a ghost, ignored Zhang Huizhi's objections and wrapped herself in a blanket to go downstairs to Mo Kai Liang's home.
Zhang Huizhi had lost the will to scold Lan Qingqing. Ever since she learned about Tong Le's infidelity, she had been like a person possessed, sitting on the sofa in a daze, lost in thought. She couldn't figure out when Tong Le had started cheating or how he could betray someone as wealthy as the boss of Zong Group.
With so much on her mind, Zhang Huizhi completely forgot that someone had just died in the house. Normally, she would have filled the place with incense to ward off evil spirits, but now she was no longer afraid of ghosts; something even more sinister had happened—Tong Le had cheated on the boss of Zong Group!
As she thought about how Tong Le was about to rise to fame and fortune, she felt more worried than if there were ghosts haunting her home. She would rather be scared by ghosts all night than watch Tong Le abandon her and Ke Wenjie to soar high and become successful on his own.
When morning broke, Mo Kai Liang returned from the morning market with groceries. He went into the kitchen to cook while Zhang Huizhi lay under a small blanket, reclining on the sofa. Having not slept all night, dark circles accentuated her already drooping eyelids.
Mo Kai Liang thought to himself, "Aunt, why don't you sleep at my house? I'm not afraid of ghosts; I can stay here for a while. My mom used to say I have enough yang energy that even small ghosts would avoid me."
Zhang Huizhi slowly sat up and sighed, "It's not that I'm afraid of ghosts; living people are much scarier!"
At that moment, Lan Qingqing came upstairs after washing up. Seeing Zhang Huizhi sleeping on the sofa, she noticed how haggard and aged she looked. It seemed like she had been drained of all vitality overnight.
Lan Qingqing couldn't help but ask nervously, "What strange things happened last night?"
Zhang Huizhi shot her a sideways glance. "What strange things? Can anything be stranger than Tong Le's infidelity? I've been thinking all night and still can't figure it out—what's wrong with that boss of Zong Group? Is he blind or under some spell to be attracted to Tong Le?"
Suddenly struck by inspiration, Zhang Huizhi tried to find some comfort in her assumptions. "It must just be Tong Le's one-sided crush; otherwise, that boss must have some serious issues if he finds Tong Le appealing!"
The more she spoke, the more confident she became. "Yes, that's probably it!"
Lan Qingqing looked at Zhang Huizhi's self-satisfied expression and coldly laughed. "That person is highly educated and talented! Do you think Zong Group has developed so rapidly over the years just by luck?"
After saying this, Lan Qingqing fell into feelings of jealousy and unease. She felt that the gap between her life and Tong Le's was widening. Clearly, the path Tong Le was taking now was what she had always yearned for—she dreamed of one day being with a wealthy man and climbing to the pinnacle of life on his shoulders.
Now it was Tong Le—someone she had never respected—who was about to reach that peak while she remained stuck with a Phoenix Man who was on the verge of losing everything and a lazy mother-in-law who only knew how to bully others and boast.
But that wasn't even the worst part; the worst part was that she had given her youth to Ke Wenjie only to end up with a house occupied by foolish Zhang Huizhi and an unwanted burden growing inside her.
In those moments, she felt an overwhelming urge to pound her belly until it burst so that the child inside could just disappear!
