The living room was bustling with activity as everyone gathered together. Mo Kai Liang was busy cooking, while Lan Qingqing occasionally lent a hand. Zhang Huizhi sat on the sofa watching television, and Ke Wenjie had invited his neighbors, Ke Wei Qiang, Jin Feng, and Jin Zi Meng, over for dinner.
The meal consisted of hot pot and stir-fried dishes, all organized by Ke Wenjie, who had specifically invited Jin Zi Meng to their home. Upon learning that Jin Zi Meng had started working at Tongshan Real Estate, he began to plot in his mind. He couldn't understand why Tong Le, that scatterbrain, would hire Jin Zi Meng, but since the situation was already set in motion, he decided to take advantage of it and strengthen the relationship between himself and Jin Zi Meng, hoping to bring her onto his side.
Jin Zi Meng felt a surge of anxiety when she received a call from Tong Le just before finishing work. He told her that Ke Wenjie had invited her over for dinner so that the family could spend some time together. The news made her scalp tingle; she had never considered herself part of Ke Wenjie’s family. After all, Ke Wenjie, Tong Le, and Zhang Huizhi hadn’t even divorced Ke Wei Qiang yet. She knew about her own status as Tong Le's mistress, but it seemed that the Ke family had long accepted this arrangement. As an indirect observer of their complicated relationships, she felt it best not to comment.
In any case, until she could bring happiness to Tong Le, she wouldn’t interfere too much in his romantic affairs. She understood that Tong Le had a tough life and lacked a sense of security. Her love for him meant accepting many of his choices.
Jin Zi Meng arrived with a small gift as a courtesy. The family appeared polite enough during the gathering, except for Zhang Huizhi, who often rolled her eyes; Jin Zi Meng didn’t feel too uncomfortable.
As the dishes were served one after another, Ke Wenjie poured half a glass of wine for Jin Zi Meng. She quickly declined, saying she couldn’t drink much alcohol. Jin Feng shot her a knowing look, prompting her to amend her refusal: “Well then, I’ll just have a little since it’s a rare occasion for us to gather.”
From Jin Zi Meng's few words, Ke Wenjie sensed that she was articulate. Although she seemed ordinary at first glance, she likely had a steady and reliable nature—someone who spoke appropriately in different situations.
Ke Wei Qiang poured himself a full glass of liquor and advised his son: “Zi Meng is your sister now; her matters are your matters too. As her brother, you need to pay attention to her needs. Understand?”
Ke Wenjie nodded in agreement; after all, that was their father speaking.
Ke Wei Qiang drank half of his glass without regard for the occasion. He had no friends in the city and had been craving alcohol since he arrived; this was the perfect opportunity to quench that thirst.
Lan Qingqing looked Jin Zi Meng up and down with curiosity and asked, “What made you decide to work at Tongshan Real Estate? Did Tong Le give you any trouble?”
Jin Zi Meng quickly shook her head. “No, I think it’s because of family reasons that he let me take the job. After all, my brother is managing the company; it’s only natural.”
Lan Qingqing chuckled lightly. “Who knows who will own this company in the future?”
Zhang Huizhi shot Lan Qingqing an irritated glare. “Stop saying those ominous things! You’re eating my food!”
Lan Qingqing felt a surge of anger but couldn’t express it openly. Fortunately for her, Zhang Huizhi had an enemy in the room.
Ke Wei Qiang slammed his palm on the table, startling everyone around him. He shot a warning glance at Zhang Huizhi, reminding her that she was carrying his grandchild. "If you don't want to eat, then get out from the table!"
Zhang Huizhi gritted her teeth, not daring to retort.
As he cooked slices of meat for hot pot, Ke Wei Qiang continued, "Zi Meng, that Tongshan Real Estate will eventually return to your brother's hands. For now, think of yourself as an undercover agent. If there’s any movement from the company, let your brother know. That Tong Le is nothing but a loose woman. If she were in our village, she would have been drowned in spit long ago. A woman like her, who disregards her virtue, would be stripped and hung at the village entrance for everyone to despise her disgraceful acts!"
Ke Wei Qiang expressed his dissatisfaction. "My son has worked diligently for years to build Tongshan Real Estate into what it is today, only to be tripped up by a worthless wretch. Tell me, shouldn’t we deal with this shameless creature?"
He let out a cold laugh. "Anyone who dares to oppose the Ke Family will end up with a bad fate! Fortunately, we have strength in numbers; that little Tong Le is nothing to us! She’s just a wild child without parents; she can’t compete with us!"
He raised his glass. "Come on, everyone! Let’s drink to unity as a family and stand together against outsiders! Cheers!"
Everyone at the table lifted their glasses, creating an atmosphere that seemed warm and harmonious on the surface but was actually filled with undercurrents of tension and hidden agendas.
Lan Qingqing looked down on Ke Wei Qiang's family. While she found some satisfaction in hearing him curse Tong Le, she knew that apart from Ke Wenjie and Jin Zi Meng, the rest of the Ke family were uneducated fools who could only boast without substance. She felt embarrassed by their behavior.
She had no intention of believing Ke Wei Qiang's grandiose claims; her original plan remained unchanged: to distance herself from Ke Wenjie as soon as possible while ensuring her own interests were protected.
