The desire for revenge surged from the depths of Zhang Huizhi's heart. She had originally intended to submit and give in, knowing she could not overpower Ke Wei Qiang. The shadows of her past, marked by years of domestic abuse, loomed over her like a thick black fog, especially after that kick from Ke Wei Qiang, enveloping her in fear.
She clearly remembered when her life began to improve: it was when Ke Wenjie married Tong Le, and when Tong Le first called her "Mom." At that time, Ke Wenjie had brought her out of the countryside, and for the first time, she experienced a life of freedom alongside him and Tong Le. Back then, her temper was not as sharp as it was now; she would accompany Tong Le to malls, parks, and supermarkets, indulging in delicious food. She discovered many wonderful things about city life and gradually forgot the hardships she endured during those years in the countryside.
The days of hardship had dulled her senses; she felt trapped in a quagmire without realizing it. It was only when she came to the city alone with her son that she truly understood what happiness was and what it meant to be in control of her own life.
She despised Ke Wei Qiang deeply, but after decades of habitual fear, she had also developed a tendency to not resist. Now that Ke Wei Qiang had reappeared in her life, despite their nominal marriage and occasional meetings over the years—where they would exchange trivial pleasantries and share bland meals—she felt overwhelmed by fear as the shadows of the past resurfaced. Yet, more than fear, she felt an intense unwillingness.
Why should she endure a lifetime of silence? Ke Wei Qiang had found a Concubine; why should she continue to suffer?
Zhang Huizhi sprang up from the ground, pointing at Ke Wei Qiang and shouting defiantly, "You’re protecting her, aren’t you? Do you believe I will report you for bigamy? Jin Feng is nothing but a mistress! A worthless wretch! Are you really going to hit me for a mistress? You have no shame or conscience!"
Her voice grew louder as she continued to shout. "What’s so great about her that you protect her so fiercely? Did she give you children? Who took care of you all those years? Who gave birth to such an outstanding son? Not only do you not appreciate me, but you also run off with some cheap floozy! You two are truly a perfect match—like rotten fish and spoiled shrimp!"
As she shouted these words, Zhang Huizhi felt nervous inside; she was watching Ke Wei Qiang's reaction. To her surprise, he did not retaliate against her.
Emboldened, she pressed on. "Ke Wei Qiang, you’ve wasted your life! At your age, still believing in some nonsense called true love? You look like a toad! What do you think Jin Feng sees in you? Isn’t it just your piece of land back in the countryside? You’re an old man with barely any hair left; what charm do you think you have? Ugh! With someone like you who can’t last three seconds in bed, who would want to be with you? Even sharing a bed is unpleasant because you smell like an old man!"
Zhang Huizhi reveled in her words; although she had been beaten today, she felt satisfied venting her frustrations!
But suddenly, Jin Feng dropped a bombshell that left Zhang Huizhi fuming.
Jin Feng clung to Ke Wei Qiang's arm with an air of innocence and said sweetly, "Brother, why don’t I just return that piece of land back to you? I don’t want it anymore; I’m not after money—I really am not."
Upon hearing this, Zhang Huizhi felt as if she could jump three feet high! She pointed at Jin Feng and trembled with rage. "What did you just say? That piece of land—Ke Wei Qiang gave it to you?"
Jin Feng said this deliberately to provoke Zhang Huizhi. Although she appeared meek and easy to bully on the surface, she wasn’t about to let herself be taken advantage of. She couldn’t play Zhang Huizhi’s aggressive game but knew exactly what words would irritate her.
At this moment, Ke Wei Qiang could no longer hold back. He had remained silent earlier just to see how far Zhang Huizhi would go with her outburst! He was somewhat surprised by how fiercely she was talking back—perhaps living in the city for too long had made her forget what real hardship was!
Ke Wei Qiang turned around and grabbed a broom from the corner, swinging it at Zhang Huizhi with all his might. This time he intended to hit hard—he would bury her back in the countryside if he had to!
The living room descended into chaos as Zhang Huizhi dodged while grabbing anything nearby for cover.
Just then, Ke Wenjie entered the house and rushed forward upon seeing the scene unfold.
"Stop!" he shouted as he restrained Ke Wei Qiang. "Dad! Didn’t you promise me you wouldn’t lay a hand on Mom?"
Ke Wei Qiang's face flushed with anger. "Do you know what this dog woman just said to me? If I don’t kill her today, I must be out of my mind! I’m going to make sure she pays!"
Ke Wei Qiang circled around the house, while Zhang Huizhi ran in the same direction. Just outside the door, which had been left ajar, two uniformed officers appeared, bringing everything to a halt.
Ke Wenjie turned around as the Male Officer spoke, "Ke Wei Qiang, Ke Wenjie, come with us."
Meanwhile, under the scorching midday sun, Tong Le arrived at the restaurant entrance. She had arranged to meet Lan Qingqing there for lunch.
Two minutes later, a taxi pulled up by the roadside. Tian Ling got out with a small shoulder bag and hurried towards Tong Le, panting slightly. "I’m not late, am I? Have Lan Qingqing and your husband arrived yet?"
Tong Le replied that they hadn’t arrived yet. "Let’s go inside and wait; they’re already on their way."
Tong Le and Tian Ling entered the restaurant, heading to the table that Lan Qingqing had reserved by the window in the main hall.
Once seated, Tong Le frequently checked her phone, turning the screen on and off as if waiting for someone’s message.
Noticing Tong Le's preoccupied demeanor, Tian Ling asked, "What’s wrong? Are you waiting for someone?"
Tong Le calculated the time in her mind. Just moments ago, Zong Zeyu had informed her that the police had swiftly contacted the landlord of the apartment rented by Ke Wenjie. The landlord had readily agreed to allow them to break down walls. Furthermore, the police had discovered toxic substances with radiation similar to those found in the apartment where her parents lived.
Tian Ling instinctively stood up in surprise. "So fast! There really are toxic substances! Ke Wenjie is trying to kill you!"
Tong Le grabbed Tian Ling's wrist and urged her to sit down. "Be careful; you might be overheard."
