Hou Yi found himself at a loss for words, unable to respond to Wu Youyou, whose mouth was like a machine gun, firing off words in all directions. Lan Qingqing couldn't hold back any longer; she hid behind Hou Yi and shouted at Wu Youyou, "It was you who said that as long as Si Li had someone to help me work, you would agree to let me stay away from the construction site. Now Hou Yi has brought you four people—what more do you want? Wu Youyou, did Dazong Zong teach you how to insult others? Do you think it's right to bite at anyone you catch?"
Wu Youyou laughed heartily. "Right or wrong? Child, I decide what's right here!" She had no intention of engaging with Lan Qingqing over such trivial matters. She was merely curious about how Hou Yi and Lan Qingqing ended up together; she had to admit that Hou Yi had quite a peculiar taste.
With a mischievous grin, Wu Youyou added, "Well then, you all can go. But remember, it was you who promised me these four tree stumps to help with my work."
Hou Yi ignored Wu Youyou's remarks. Four people were more than enough for her to deal with! Did she really think she could swallow up four strong men?
He took Lan Qingqing away, and as they got into the sports car, he slammed on the gas and sped off. As they drove toward the city center, Lan Qingqing admired Hou Yi's profile. For the first time, she experienced this kind of domineering love—being protected in a rough and forceful manner without needing any words or explanations; the outcome was simply placed before her.
She recalled her attempts to please Ke Wenjie; that love had been something she begged for, seduced into existence through desperate means. It seemed like she had been relatively happy—at least happier than Tong Le—because she was certain that Ke Wenjie loved her far more than he did Tong Le.
But now, she felt that all those past affections were not love at all; what she felt now was genuine.
Under the blazing sun in a convertible, the wind whipped through her hair chaotically, mirroring the turmoil in her heart.
Hou Yi broke the silence. "Want to go shopping at the mall? Buy a bag? Or some jewelry?"
"All of it," Lan Qingqing replied. "I'll follow your lead."
Hou Yi took her to an upscale mall where Lan Qingqing chose a bag worth thirty thousand. Without hesitation, Hou Yi paid for it, and the shopping bag landed in Lan Qingqing's hands. The female sales associate bowed and flattered her, satisfying her vanity.
They then went to a café inside the mall. As Hou Yi stirred his coffee in a ceramic cup, he asked casually, "Do you have any news about Tong Le? What’s she been up to?"
Lan Qingqing's heart skipped a beat as she remembered hearing Ke Wenjie mention that Hou Yi had feelings for Tong Le—serious feelings that hinted at wanting to date and marry her.
A wave of displeasure washed over her. Was Hou Yi taking her out shopping just to extract information about Tong Le?
With a forced smile, Lan Qingqing replied, "Why don't you just ask Tong Le yourself? I'm not with her every day. Isn't she busy having an affair with Zong Zeyu?"
Hou Yi chuckled coldly. "Are you jealous? They're good friends, but Tong Le chose someone wealthy and influential."
"You have money and status too," Lan Qingqing countered. "You're better than Zong Zeyu."
Hou Yi dismissed her comment with disdain. "I'll take that as a compliment."
Lan Qingqing straightened up and said earnestly, "Come with me to the hospital and help me terminate this pregnancy. I don’t want this child anymore; I want us to be together properly."
Seeing the seriousness on Lan Qingqing's face made Hou Yi pause. Initially, he thought of getting rid of the child as a way to help Tong Le take revenge. However, he later learned that Tong Le not only didn't want Lan Qingqing to terminate the pregnancy but actually hoped for Lan Qingqing and Ke Wenjie to end up together—a perfect match of rotten fish and spoiled shrimp destined to be entangled for life.
Hou Yi felt that Tong Le was quite ruthless. Instead of seeking immediate revenge for the blood feud, she chose a slow and torturous method to make Lan Qingqing regret for a lifetime.
Of course, Tong Le's thoughts were her own, and he stood firmly on her side.
