Sweating profusely, Zhang Huizhi glanced at the tightly shut bedroom door and whispered, "Son, what do you want to eat? Mom will make it for you. I talked to Lan Qingqing yesterday, and she said she would transfer the money today. It should be in the account by this afternoon."
Inside the room, Ke Wenjie remained silent, prompting Zhang Huizhi to let out a quiet sigh.
At that moment, the doorbell rang. Zhang Huizhi walked to the door and opened it, revealing two portly men standing before her.
Just as she was about to speak, the man at the front questioned, "Why haven't you moved out yet? The landlord told me to come collect the keys this morning. How much longer do you need?"
Zhang Huizhi was taken aback but quickly realized the misunderstanding. "You’ve got it wrong! It’s the apartment downstairs that’s being vacated. Both the downstairs unit and the one across from us have been returned; it’s not our place!"
As she attempted to close the door, one of the men blocked it with his foot. "I bought this apartment! I have the deed right here! The transfer paperwork with the landlord has already been completed! When are you planning to move out? Don’t try to play games with me; the landlord told me that you didn’t sign a lease with them! So don’t think you can threaten me with that 'sale doesn’t void lease' nonsense!"
Zhang Huizhi was confused, but at that moment, Ke Wenjie emerged from the bedroom and was not confused at all.
Ke Wenjie was sharp; he quickly understood what had happened—he had been played by Lan Qingqing.
He immediately called Lan Qingqing, but she didn’t answer.
Fuming with anger, he sent her a voice message: "You better come home right now! Did you sell the house behind my back? Lan Qingqing! You wretched woman! I bought this house for you! What right do you have to sell it? Was this intentional? Call me back!"
Outside, Zhang Huizhi sat on the floor mat in despair. She never expected to be deceived by two daughters-in-law in succession; the first one had left her bankrupt, and now this one had left her homeless!
Sitting on the ground, she rolled around in distress, crying out in anguish, "Heavens! They’re all devils! Why are they treating me like this? Why are they doing this to an old woman like me? Why?!"
Zhang Huizhi pounded her chest in frustration, feeling utterly powerless for being tricked by two young girls. But as she continued to hit herself, she suddenly started coughing.
A wave of nausea surged through her stomach, a sensation like two knives stirring within.
She quickly knelt down and couldn't hold back her vomit—only to find herself spitting up blood.
Ke Wenjie was horrified. He rushed to his mother’s side, panic-stricken. "Mom! What’s wrong? Why are you vomiting blood?!"
Seeing the thick blood pooling on the floor made Zhang Huizhi faint instantly.
Ke Wenjie grabbed his phone and dialed for help.
Once they arrived at the hospital, Zhang Huizhi underwent tests and received IV fluids. When she woke up, her face was pale.
Ke Wenjie ran back and forth through the hospital corridors with various forms in hand. His bank card was nearly empty; if he hadn’t enrolled his mother in social security and health insurance, they might not even be able to afford medication right now.
The doctor called Ke Wenjie into their office and said apologetically, "We recommend transferring your mother to a larger hospital for further examination. We can’t determine exactly what’s wrong here; her current symptoms suggest food poisoning, but we suspect there may be other complications given her medical history. To avoid any delay in treatment, we advise transferring her immediately."
Taking a deep breath, Ke Wenjie asked anxiously, "Is my mom terminally ill?"
The doctor shook their head. "I can’t say for certain right now, but transferring her promptly is definitely advisable."
Ke Wenjie stepped out of the medical office, feeling utterly dejected. He thought his life was a complete mess! He had lost his money, his home, and now it seemed he might even lose his mother!
In just a few short days, everything had changed dramatically, and he couldn't understand why it had come to this. He opened his banking app again, staring at the balance—empty! Empty! Empty! He knew that treating illnesses required money, and if it was a complicated condition, it would take even more!
He dialed Lan Qingqing's number several times, but she didn't answer. He felt increasingly desperate.
In his frustration, he rummaged through his contacts and found a long-silent number. When he called, a familiar voice answered, just as proud as before.
"Who is this?" the woman asked.
Ke Wenjie hesitantly replied, "It's me, Ke Wenjie."
There was a brief pause before she responded, "Oh? Did I hear that right? Ke Wenjie? You actually called me?"
Gathering his courage, he said, "I've run into some trouble and I need to borrow some money."
"Let's meet up," she said readily. "It's been a long time. I thought you would never reach out to me again. Money isn't an issue; I just want to see you first."
