Lan Qingqing turned to leave, but Ke Wenjie grabbed her wrist. She glared back at him, "You're hurting me!"
Ke Wenjie quickly released his grip, forcing himself to calm down. He was in a vulnerable position now; he couldn't afford to be aggressive. He still wanted the child that Lan Qingqing was carrying. With Tong Le no longer wanting him and the likelihood that the child in Tong Le's womb wasn't his, the only child he could trust was Lan Qingqing's. After all, they had spent nearly every day together over the past few years.
He couldn't bear the thought of losing everything—his money, his status, and now even his child. He wanted to keep this baby.
With no other options left, he softened his tone and pleaded with Lan Qingqing, "Can't you just have this child? The baby hasn't done anything wrong. If you give birth to it, I'll take care of it. It won't take long for me to turn my life around; can't you have a little faith in me?"
Lan Qingqing found Ke Wenjie's words absurd. "When you had money, you weren't generous with me at all. After I give birth, won't I still have to live like before—scraping by?"
Ke Wenjie was bewildered. "I wasn't generous to you? The money I gave you, the time I spent with you, the love I showed you—it's worth ten times what Tong Le ever gave! Aren't you satisfied? Who bought your house? Who bought your car? And what about the money for your cosmetic surgery and living expenses? I even paid for your classes when you wanted to pursue further studies! Doesn't that count for anything? Lan Qingqing, how can you say such things? Where's your conscience?"
She let out a cold laugh. "Ke Wenjie, you're far too confident in yourself. In this day and age, if you want to pursue a woman without spending at least seventy or eighty thousand, how do you expect to succeed? In seven years, you've given me so little compared to other men who can gift me a Hermes bag worth over a hundred thousand on our first meeting! Don't you feel ashamed? A miser like you thinks he can chase women? If I hadn't been so naive back then, I wouldn't have fallen for your tricks!"
Lan Qingqing turned to head upstairs again, but Ke Wenjie blocked her path. Despite the countless thoughts of wanting to kill her that surged within him at that moment, he had to suppress them.
"Tell me," he said, "what can I do to keep this child?"
Seeing Ke Wenjie's determined expression surprised her; she hadn't expected him to agree so quickly to negotiate. She thought it would take several rounds of back-and-forth.
Though reluctant, Ke Wenjie couldn't bear the thought of losing the child Lan Qingqing was carrying. He understood clearly that he was currently under Hua Rongxiao's influence and wouldn't be able to break free from it for at least the next few years.
Hua Rongxiao was too shrewd to bear him any children. Over the years he had relied on Hua Rongxiao's support, and he couldn't afford to pursue other women either—not to mention continuing the Ke family line!
With his father imprisoned and facing execution soon, all his father Ke Wei Qiang wanted was to see descendants of the Ke family before his death.
Ke Wenjie wanted this child not only for himself but also as a fulfillment of his father's wish. He realized that he might not have another chance to father his own children in the coming years; he needed to leave behind some legacy.
"Lan Qingqing," he said again, "please keep this child. It's a symbol of our love! It's a little life!"
Lan Qingqing almost laughed at that; hearing him refer to it as a symbol made her feel as though he was grasping at straws and playing the emotional card.
She enjoyed having him wrapped around her finger—especially when it came to manipulating Ke Wenjie.
Since they were playing games anyway, she boldly replied, "Alright then, if we’re keeping this child, I've roughly calculated that raising it will cost at least fifty thousand cash—not even counting any luxuries. Unless you give me fifty thousand upfront, we can forget about it."
Ke Wenjie was taken aback. "Fifty thousand? For one child?"
Lan Qingqing continued, "If not fifty thousand then how about thirty thousand? You can raise this child yourself after it's born. Once I give birth, I'll completely sever ties with it; don’t bother me about it again. Thirty thousand is non-negotiable."
Ke Wenjie looked at Lan Qingqing's slightly protruding belly; how could such a wretched woman demand thirty thousand! It felt like she had diamonds embedded in her womb!
Seeing Ke Wenjie's incredulous yet hesitant expression made Lan Qingqing think that perhaps there was indeed hope for those thirty thousand after all.
Lan Qingqing reminded him, "I’m giving you a week to gather thirty thousand. Once the money is in my account, I’ll go to the hospital to register and get the prenatal check-up, cooperating with you to bring the child into this world. I also have a suggestion for you: why not ask Tong Le for the thirty thousand? After all, you two are getting divorced anyway. If you manage to con her out of it, she probably won’t resist too much. After all, if she can use thirty thousand to get rid of a man like you, she should be more than willing."
With a smile, Lan Qingqing added, "One week’s time."
Having said that, she left the hospital.
Ke Wenjie stood there for a long time, lost in thought. For the first time in his life, he experienced the feeling of betrayal. The woman he had supported for seven years had turned against him, becoming the one who bit him the hardest!
