Ke Wenjie felt like meat on the chopping block, with Lan Qingqing holding his fate in her hands. If he wanted to keep that child, he had no choice but to comply with her demands.
At that moment, he was filled with regret—regret for having raised Lan Qingqing, the cunning wolf in sheep's clothing, and regret for having trusted this despicable woman. He had once thought he was in control of everything, but now, facing a crisis, it was Lan Qingqing who had plunged the deepest knife into his back.
He stumbled toward the hospital entrance, his mood extremely low. Memories of his university days and the three years of marriage flooded back. In those early seven years, he had been quite happy—wealthy, respected, and powerful. With Tong Le by his side, everything seemed to go smoothly.
He tried to imagine what life would have been like if he hadn’t divorced Tong Le and had maintained their marriage. Perhaps he would have built a fortune worth hundreds of millions and even taken his company public.
But now, everything was back to square one, and he was at the mercy of Lan Qingqing. He pondered if he hadn’t cheated or taken up with that promiscuous woman, and if he had devoted himself entirely to his life with Tong Le, would he have avoided this predicament? If he hadn’t conspired with his father to harm Tong Le’s parents, maybe he would have a child with Tong Le by now.
Regret surged through him in an instant. He hadn’t cherished the happiness he once had; instead, he chose a path that led to betrayal and isolation.
Ke Wenjie got into his car and found himself inexplicably driving to the office building of Tongshan Real Estate. He missed Tong Le; he knew their divorce proceedings were ongoing and there was no turning back.
Standing outside the building, he gazed at the familiar road he used to walk every day. He silently reflected on his feelings of resentment and regret. Ultimately, he had failed to seize control of his life; it was too late for remorse.
Driven by some unseen force, he took the elevator up and entered the lobby. Employees cast surprised glances at him; no one expected Ke Wenjie would dare to show up at the company.
The gossip surrounding the Tong family had spread throughout the office long ago. As Ke Wenjie approached the office door, Jiang Zhichao rushed forward and blocked his path.
"What do you want? Are you here to see our boss? Do you have an appointment?" Jiang Zhichao asked.
Ke Wenjie looked at Jiang Zhichao, who was acting like a sycophant. Back when he worked here, he'd never seen Jiang so eager to please.
Just as Ke Wenjie opened his mouth to speak, Jiang Zhichao pushed him back. "Get out! Our boss is busy."
Ke Wenjie shoved Jiang Zhichao aside. "Are you trying to lay hands on me? I'm security!"
At that moment, the office door swung open, and Tong Le appeared.
Seeing Ke Wenjie’s disheveled appearance, Tong Le said calmly, "Come in."
Ke Wenjie stepped inside and instinctively reached to close the door behind him. Tong Le sat back at her desk and ordered him, "Leave the door open. There’s nothing we need to hide from anyone. It’s stuffy in here; let some air in."
Reluctantly, Ke Wenjie complied and opened the office door again.
Tong Le smiled slightly. "Do you need something?"
Ke Wenjie took a deep breath, gathering his courage. How far had the divorce proceedings gone? How much longer would it take?
Tong Le shrugged. "Why don’t you ask your lawyer? Why are you asking me? Don’t you have your own lawyer?"
Ke Wenjie looked at Tong Le, who was sitting at the desk, and it seemed as if she had transformed into a different person. The desk suited her well; he couldn't understand why the Tong Le, who once exuded the aura of a housewife, now resembled a successful businesswoman.
On the contrary, Ke Wenjie felt his own presence diminish.
Tong Le spoke again, "What do you want from me?"
He had a thousand words to say. He wanted to reconcile, to return to their previous life together. He still wanted to be Boss Ke, to be in charge of everything like before. Instead, he found himself living in Hua Rongxiao's house, reduced to being Hua Rongxiao's dog, with no freedom to come and go. Even stepping outside required surveillance from the cameras at the door. He had no voice in his own life; he was worse off than Hua Rongxiao's male lawyer.
The feeling of being dependent on others was truly unbearable.
Ke Wenjie inhaled deeply; too many words hovered on the tip of his tongue but fell silent.
He got straight to the point. "The divorce paperwork will be finalized soon. I want to make a request of you. After all we've been through as a couple, only you can help me with this."
Tong Le replied coldly, "You still dare to make requests? Ke Wenjie, you don’t even mention what you did to my parents! Do you really think that because your father took the blame for you, everything is fine? Do you think I would believe that it was all his doing?"
Ke Wenjie lied without flinching, insisting, "That was my father's mistake! It has nothing to do with me! How many times do I have to say it for you to believe me?"
