Tong Le didn't dare to actually kill Hou Yi. Without hesitation, she swung her fists at him, targeting his face with all her strength.
Hou Yi tried to protect his face, unwilling to fight back; retaliating would make him seem uncouth.
"Please, Auntie, I give up! My face hurts!" he pleaded.
Tong Le stopped but was still furious. She pointed at Hou Yi's face and demanded, "What did you do to Wu Youyou? Did she provoke you? You took her to a nightclub in the middle of the night to drink! What were you thinking? You invited friends out for drinks and just left her there? You didn’t care about her at all? You just abandoned her? Hou Yi, are you even human? I used to think you were unreliable, but look at what you've done—you're worse than an animal!"
Hou Yi covered his face, which throbbed with pain. He couldn't understand why Tong Le was so angry. From what she had just described, it was likely that something had happened to Wu Youyou at the nightclub.
"I don't know why you're yelling at me," he said. "I didn't take her to the nightclub last night; she came looking for me. She said she wasn't feeling well and wanted to drink. I was already drunk by then—how could I take care of her? Besides, she's an adult; doesn't she know how to take care of herself?"
He stood up, growing impatient. "What happened to Wu Youyou? Did someone hit her or did she get into a fight? Did she hurt someone badly or what?"
At that moment, Hou Yi still didn't think Wu Youyou was in any real danger. With her strong personality, how could she possibly be at a disadvantage?
Tong Le was filled with rage. She struggled to find the words to describe Wu Youyou's situation. Should she say that Wu Youyou had been violated by four men? That she had been toyed with? Saying such things would be an insult, a hurtful blow.
Tong Le felt heartbroken—not only for Wu Youyou's plight but also for Hou Yi's dismissive attitude towards the potential dangers Wu Youyou faced. Yet she understood that some of Hou Yi's words held truth; Wu Youyou was indeed an adult and should be able to protect herself. It wasn't Hou Yi's responsibility to look after her.
As Hou Yi observed the change in Tong Le's expression—from anger and defiance to helplessness and even despair—he began to suspect that Wu Youyou's situation might be far more serious than he had thought.
Otherwise, Tong Le wouldn't have come here wielding an axe.
At that moment, several security guards rushed down the hallway, armed with weapons and shields as if they were there to rescue Hou Yi.
"Get lost!" he snapped at the guards. "Don't bother me!"
Once they left, he turned back to Tong Le. "Where is Wu Youyou now? Is she at the police station? Has she been seriously hurt or what?"
He silently observed Tong Le’s changing expression. She remained silent, but her eyes reflected anger and helplessness.
It dawned on Hou Yi that Wu Youyou must have gone through something terrible.
"Do you need me to cooperate with the investigation?" he continued. "Or should I ask my friends in the circle if anyone has done anything to Wu Youyou?"
Tong Le looked at Hou Yi's slightly softened expression and realized that before getting all worked up over him, she should have waited until things were clearer. She had come here seeking accountability because she believed someone from Hou Yi's circle had harmed Wu Youyou, but it seemed now that it might not be related to him at all.
Taking a deep breath and suppressing the sadness and moisture welling in her eyes, Tong Le turned and pulled the axe out of the wall. Even she was surprised by her own strength.
