Tears streamed down Wu Youyou's face. Although she wasn't sobbing loudly, the words she had just spoken echoed clearly in Zong Jin's ears.
Wen Cuizhi couldn't bear to witness such a scene; she wiped her tears and turned to leave the room.
Zong Zeyu quickly took the axe from Tong Le's hands and whispered a warning, reminding him not to carry such dangerous things around, as it had scared him half to death.
Tong Le approached Wu Youyou, softening his tone. "I'm sorry for my harsh words earlier. I shouldn't have spoken to you that way, but I can't bear to see you hurt yourself. We all want you to be okay."
Wu Youyou hung her head, softly acknowledging Tong Le's concern.
Taking a deep breath, Tong Le felt a bit relieved.
Zong Jin turned to Tong Le and said, "You two can take a break. I need to talk to her alone."
In the bedroom, only Zong Jin and Wu Youyou remained. He held onto her arm tightly, determined not to let go this time.
Wu Youyou tugged at her arm and said, "I won't seek an end to my life."
Zong Jin refused to release his grip, furrowing his brow as he recalled what Wu Youyou had just said.
With a serious expression, he asked, "Is it true that you drank because you were upset about my marriage to Dao Wen?"
Wu Youyou remained silent, her gaze fixed on the floor.
"I didn't realize that my feelings for Dao Wen would hurt you so deeply," Zong Jin continued.
Still, Wu Youyou said nothing.
Zong Jin tightened his grip on her hand instinctively and pressed on, "So you still believe that my relationship with Dao Wen is a harm to you and Wu Yutong?"
Wu Youyou met his gaze and spoke her heart out without hesitation. "Yes! I don't want to see you with Dao Wen or any other woman! You can only belong to my sister! I've even thought that if your mother is so eager for a child, I could bear one for you—however many you want—but you cannot be with another woman!"
Tears streamed down Wu Youyou's cheeks as she broke down. "I used to think that as long as I was by your side, you'd be happy. I would fulfill the role meant for my sister. But then I realized you've changed; you no longer love my sister. The vow of not marrying that you once made was completely abandoned when you met Dao Wen—you've become someone else! Zong Jin, you're not worthy of my sister! But now I’m not worthy of you either because I've been tainted; I have no right to ask anything of you! If that's the case, then let me die! If I die, no one will stand in the way of your happiness with Dao Wen! I shouldn't even exist!"
With red-rimmed eyes filled with hatred and unwillingness, she unleashed everything she had kept inside her heart without caring about future regrets.
She loved her sister; she loved Zong Jin; she couldn't bear the thought of Zong Jin with any other woman! But now, after experiencing last night's sordid events, she felt unworthy of being by Zong Jin's side.
Zong Jin looked into Wu Youyou's eyes; her words seemed to transport him into another world where he felt he hardly knew her—or perhaps he had never truly understood her at all.
Guilt, anger, and regret enveloped him instantly; his pain was no less than hers.
With red eyes of his own, Zong Jin reminisced about his deceased wife Wu Yutong and the little shadow that used to follow him everywhere—Wu Youyou. In this moment, all the memories that once brought him joy and happiness had soured; even the person before him seemed transformed.
In that moment, he seemed to make a certain resolution, a determination to tear himself apart and fall alongside Wu Youyou and Wu Yutong. The promises he once made and the traces of deep love had now transformed into sharp swords of chastity, piercing his heart. He thought to himself that perhaps the root of all these mistakes began with his feelings for Dao Wen.
Zong Jin spoke up, "If I never marry or fall in love in this lifetime, will you be alright?"
