Ke Wenjie could not accept the fact of his mother's death. In the hospital, he caused a scene with the doctors and nurses, pushing them to their limits until, in frustration, one of the doctors called the police.
When the police arrived, Ke Wenjie was still in a frenzied state. Such incidents were not uncommon for the officers, and fortunately, Ke Wenjie was merely acting out rather than becoming violent. The police helped to mediate the situation, and as Ke Wenjie gradually calmed down, he decided to have an autopsy performed on Zhang Huizhi. He could not accept that his mother had died under mysterious circumstances; it was all too sudden.
As the nature of the situation escalated, Ke Wenjie’s first suspect was Tong Le. He recalled how he had once conspired with his relative, Ke Wei Qiang, to poison Tong Le's parents. Now, with his own mother in the hospital and the past resurfacing due to a recent drug case being uncovered, he wondered if Tong Le was seeking revenge by poisoning Zhang Huizhi while he was unaware.
During his mother’s hospitalization, the specific cause of her illness remained elusive. It was only at the last moment that the doctor suggested a possible poisoning. Naturally, Ke Wenjie directed his suspicions towards Tong Le. Only she had a deep-seated grudge against him; the incident from years ago felt like a boomerang that had come back to hit him hard.
Ke Wenjie moved to a corner of the hallway and called Tong Le. The call connected quickly. With disdain in his voice, he asked, "Is that you? Have you been to the hospital recently?"
Unable to contain his emotions, he shouted into the phone, "What grudge do you have against me? Why would you harm an elderly woman? What could she possibly do to you? She used to be your mother!"
Tong Le was confused but felt no anger. Hearing Ke Wenjie rant on the phone indicated that he was having a rough time lately. She calmly replied, "What’s happened now? Something must have gone terribly wrong for you to be this enraged and incoherent. Spill it; I want to hear."
With a hint of mockery in her tone, Ke Wenjie completely lost it. "You motherf—! I’m going to kill you! I’ll tear you apart! I’ll make you wish you were dead!"
Tong Le frowned slightly; it seemed he had truly lost his mind. "I don’t have time to play games with you," she said before preparing to hang up.
Just as she was about to end the call, Ke Wenjie struggled and shouted, "You killed my mom! The police are coming for you right now! You’re finished!"
Tong Le immediately reacted. "Zhang Huizhi is dead?"
"You murderer! You killer! You have no right to say my mother’s name!" Ke Wenjie yelled.
Tong Le was surprised that Zhang Huizhi had actually died. Was this karma at work? Wasn’t it said that retribution would come in due time? Yet here it was, arriving so suddenly.
Showing no sympathy whatsoever, she remained extremely calm. "Is your mother really dead? What did she die from?"
Ke Wenjie continued to shout, "You poisoned her! You killed my mother! You thought you could use the same method to get back at me—didn’t you think I would figure it out?"
Listening to his baseless accusations without panic or defensiveness, Tong Le quickly seized the moment. "So you're saying I'm getting revenge on you? That means you and your relative were behind that poisoning incident years ago."
Having prepared ahead of time, she activated her recording device. She wanted to capture any information that could work in her favor while Ke Wenjie’s mind was clouded with confusion. Regardless of whether this information could serve as evidence later on, she couldn’t afford to miss any opportunity for a comeback.
Unfortunately, Ke Wenjie paused for a moment and regained his composure. He realized that Tong Le was trying to manipulate him and quickly corrected himself, "I didn’t! That was all my father’s doing! The police have investigated it thoroughly! Don’t try to set me up! I had no idea about that matter from the beginning!"
Tong Le sounded a bit disappointed. "Alright then, I didn’t poison your mother either. I suggest you get your facts straight before calling me again. Otherwise, I might just have to report you to the police for harassment and personal attacks."
With that, Tong Le hung up the phone.
Ke Wenjie stood frozen in place, gripping his phone tightly with his right hand, the veins in his arm bulging. He felt like throwing the phone away in frustration!
He forced himself to calm down. After regaining his composure, he thought that it probably wasn’t Tong Le who poisoned his mother; after all, someone with Tong Le’s temperament wouldn’t do such a thing.
He admitted that he had acted impulsively earlier. Even if he didn’t know Tong Le well, he understood her character enough to know that poisoning someone was not her style.
Leaning against the wall, Ke Wenjie slowly sank down, his mind racing with thoughts about the doctor’s words—unable to find the cause of the illness, it was highly likely that it was poisoning.
He couldn’t think of anyone else who would hold a grudge against his mother. Could it be Lan Qingqing? Or perhaps Mo Kai Liang?
