The hospital was a somber place. Ke Jie followed closely behind Hua Rongxiao, feeling as fragile as a small boy in the face of his mother's death. For him, her passing had become the final straw, crushing him under the weight of grief. At an age when he should have been stepping into adulthood, he found himself unable to even stand tall, now bereft of his closest blood relative.
Wiping away his tears, Ke Jie realized that there were few people in this world who could make him cry. If he had faced his mother's death during a time of success, perhaps it wouldn't have hurt so much. The tears he shed were for her, but more so for himself.
Hua Rongxiao turned to look at Ke Jie, who was sobbing quietly, and couldn't help but chuckle. "Why are you crying?" he asked. "After knowing you for so many years, this is the first time I've seen you in tears. It's quite a sight."
With a knowing tone, Hua Rongxiao continued, "I understand that your sorrow isn't solely for your mother; it's also about your current unfortunate circumstances that leave you feeling powerless. I know you're overwhelmed with feelings of defeat right now, but if you dwell in this emotion too long, you'll never be able to rise again."
Ke Jie’s eyes glinted with determination. "I will rise again!"
"Then pull yourself together," Hua Rongxiao advised. "Once the autopsy results come in and the truth is revealed, we’ll take care of everything and regroup. You will be my best ally."
He patted Ke Jie on the shoulder. "While no one sees you as a rival right now, take this time to sharpen your skills. There will come a day when we can strike back."
Meanwhile, Tong Le arrived at the Wen family home and knocked before entering. Zhou Zishuo was already there.
Tong Le made his way to Wen's study, which was in disarray with design blueprints scattered everywhere, all related to the distillery project. He saw Wen busily sorting through the papers and packing them into a woven bag, seemingly preparing to dispose of them all at once.
Just as Tong Le was about to intervene, Zhou Zishuo entered the room and snatched the bag from Wen's hands. "You go chat with Tong Le," he said. "I'll handle this mess; you don’t need any of it anyway."
Wen replied casually, "I don’t want anything to do with the distillery anymore. Why keep this stuff?"
She approached Tong Le directly and said bluntly, "If you're here to persuade me on behalf of Zong Jin, let's talk another day. I can't bear to hear anything related to him today."
"I'm going to get you some water," she added.
Tong Le watched Zhou Zishuo clean up with concern; surprisingly, Zhou wore a smile on his face as if tidying up brought him great joy.
In the dining room, they sat at the table together. Wen pushed a glass of ice water toward Tong Le and said, "Now that you're here, help me think about my next steps. I can't continue with the bar; I don’t want to do that anymore. I'm trying to figure out what else I can do. In the past, helping others with connections earned me money too, but I want to pursue something sustainable."
She gestured towards the study where Zhou Zishuo was working diligently. "He’s committed to following me; I need to ensure he has some stability."
Tong Le hesitated before speaking up. "I've signed off on the distillery project; Zong Jin drafted the contract claiming he's the major shareholder and can make decisions. I doubt he'll let you back out easily."
A complicated expression crossed Tong Le's face as he continued, "Honestly, I don't know what he's thinking either. He’s quite loyal; he promised not to go back on his word. If he said he would help establish the distillery, then he will see it through."
Wen exclaimed loudly, "Don't be ridiculous! A good start and a good finish? He initially established the Distillery to pursue me, and now he suddenly stops? Don't you think there's something wrong with his head? I just can't understand it. Are all men like this? Just acting on a whim? I thought I had encountered some rare creature, a rare breed of infatuated man, but what is this?"
Wen threw her hands up in frustration, realizing that she had been overly optimistic about him. Suddenly, she remembered that they had agreed not to mention that troublesome ghost today.
Tong Le looked at Wen with some surprise; this was the first time she had seen Wen express such emotions over a man. It sounded like a complaint, but upon closer inspection, there was a hint of unwillingness in her tone.
Tong Le stretched out her words, "So he’s not pursuing you anymore, and that’s enough to make you this upset?"
Wen paused for a moment, glaring at Tong Le. "What do you mean? Are you blaming me for overreacting? He can pursue whoever he wants! I'm just stating the facts! With someone like him who acts on a whim, getting involved is pointless. Who knows when he might sell me out!"
Wen was becoming restless. She stood up and opened the refrigerator, grabbing a bottle of beer and placing it on the table.
Tong Le watched the bottle of beer and began to understand something. She knew Wen well; usually, Wen was rational, sexy, and alluring. But now, she was impulsive, angry, and unwilling to accept the situation—clearly, her feelings were deeply engaged.
The last time Tong Le had seen Wen like this was because of her ex-boyfriend, Zhou Feng.
Tong Le took the initiative to open the beer and poured two full glasses.
As they drank, Tong Le explained, "About Zong Jin—what he did was wrong, but there are special reasons behind it. Wu Youyou was assaulted by four strange men. She blamed Zong Jin for what happened to her, saying that it was because of him that she went through such a horrific experience. Zong Jin is someone who values loyalty; he regrets not being able to take care of Wu Yutong properly and now failing to protect Wu Youyou as well. That's why he has been feeling self-destructive and said those things to you."
Tong Le hiccupped slightly from the drink. "You can tell that Wu Youyou has feelings for Zong Jin, and he feels guilty towards her. Given this situation, he might never marry or date again; his life could revolve around Wu Youyou from now on."
Wen frowned. "Is he an idiot? After Wu Youyou's incident, he's going to torture himself? Is he out of his mind?"
Tong Le blinked awkwardly and said, "Well, it's not quite fair to call him that."
