Wen was lost in thought, her right hand holding a wine glass, her eyes filled with contemplation. She was concerned about how Wu Youyou was doing now.
Tong Le spoke up, "It's pretty bad. The atmosphere in the Zong Family is quite tense right now."
At that moment, Zhou Zishuo came into the restaurant carrying a bag of discarded documents. He smiled and said, "Sister, I just went downstairs to throw out the trash!"
Wen quickly gestured for him to stop. "Don't throw it away yet; just put it against the wall. I'll handle it myself later."
Tong Le's eyes lit up; it seemed that Wen had taken his words to heart.
Meanwhile, at the Zong Family Mansion, Zong Jin had returned home, preparing to take Wu Youyou to the hospital for a check-up.
Wen Cuizhi approached him quietly and said, "I've called the family doctor. There's no need to take her to the hospital; it's more reasonable for you to stay with her. There are too many people outside, and if this gets into the reporters' ears, it will be a disaster."
Zong Jin asked, "How is Wu Youyou feeling now?"
Wen Cuizhi took a deep breath and sighed. "She has been feeling worse today and hasn't eaten anything. She says she can't stomach it; she's upstairs right now getting an IV."
Wen Cuizhi pulled Zong Jin over to the sofa and advised him, "Don't feel guilty about this situation with Wu Youyou. It's not your fault. If something happens to her, our whole family will support her through this tough time. I will find a way to make her happy again. If she can't accept this reality, I can send her abroad to live; there are houses and cars available, and money is not an issue. She has lived abroad before..."
Zong Jin interrupted, "Mom, I've decided not to get married in the future. I will take care of Wu Youyou as if she were my own sister."
Wen Cuizhi had anticipated this outcome but couldn't accept it. "Why do you always think in such a dead-end way? Why do you have to torture yourself like this? Have you told Wen about this idea? Are you planning to cut ties with her?"
Zong Jin replied, "I’ve already talked to Wen about it. Since she hasn’t developed feelings for me yet, it's better to end things sooner rather than later."
Wen Cuizhi shouted angrily, "This is ridiculous! You're sacrificing your own happiness for Wu Youyou! Have you lost your mind?"
Zong Jin fell silent.
Wen Cuizhi took out her phone to call Wen. "I’m going to tell her! You’re just acting on impulse! It’s not easy to find someone suitable; you can’t just throw that away! What do you think of Wen?"
Zong Jin forcefully pressed down on Wen Cuizhi's phone and declared firmly, "What right do I have to get married? What right do I have to be happy? Do you forget how Wu Yutong died? If I hadn’t been negligent, she wouldn’t have died!"
Wen Cuizhi retorted, "Are you saying that Wu Yutong's frail health was also your fault? Who could control that? Even if you stayed by her side day and night, she still wouldn’t have lived long! Why do you always shoulder everything yourself?"
Zong Jin's eyes turned red as he spoke softly but with deep emotion. "When she passed away, she was pregnant with my child! Even if I had been there for her until that child was born... but I wasn’t! I was too busy with that so-called work and neglected her! She and the child left me with resentment! What right do I have to start a new family? Am I worthy? I'm simply not worthy!"
As his words hung in the air, Wen Cuizhi fell silent again. Old wounds were reopened once more, and she didn't know what else could persuade Zong Jin to let go of his past burdens.
Clearly, after Wu Yutong's death, Zong Jin had found it difficult to open his heart again. Yet due to an accident involving Wu Youyou, he had once more closed himself off from the world.
Wen Cuizhi was in great pain, fully aware and understanding of everything, yet powerless to change the situation. At that moment, Zong Jin's phone rang. He pulled it out to see it was Wen calling. He chose to ignore it, unable to face her in his current emotional state.
After two missed calls, Wen's phone rang again, this time reaching Wen Cuizhi. She quickly answered, forcing a smile. "Yes, Wen, what is it?"
On the other end, Wen said, "Auntie, Zong Jin isn't answering my calls. I asked the company secretary, and he’s not at the office either. I want to meet him and talk."
Wen Cuizhi handed the phone to Zong Jin and said loudly on purpose, "Wen, Zong Jin is right here with me. I'll have him talk to you now."
With the phone thrust in front of him, Zong Jin had no choice but to take it. He had no idea what to say.
Wen was straightforward. "Let's meet and talk."
Zong Jin cleared his throat. "About the Distillery project, I've signed a contract with Tong Le. The Distillery will continue as planned; you and I will collaborate as originally intended."
Before he could finish, Wen interrupted, "Who said anything about the Distillery? I want to discuss our relationship."
Zong Jin inhaled sharply, once again at a loss for words.
Wen continued boldly, "Why don't we just talk about it over the phone? I'm tired of all this back and forth. Do you want to confirm our relationship? The kind where we’re a couple? I haven’t dated in a long time; if we’re going to date, it’s with marriage in mind. So do you want to pursue this? Give me a clear answer: if yes, let’s meet tomorrow for a date; if not, let’s cut ties completely. And don’t bring up the Distillery business again—I curse you to eat rice porridge for the rest of your life!"
