Zong Jin thought for a moment, then shook his head. There was no other way but to endure with time. After a while, it wouldn’t be so painful. Just consider Zhou Feng dead; that would ease the burden a bit.
Dao Wen fell silent, lost in thought. This was indeed the only answer.
He glanced at the date on his phone and murmured, "Ting Ting and Zhou Zishu must have already met Zhou Feng. They should be reunited as a family now. If Uncle and Aunt knew that Zhou Feng was still alive, they would be so happy."
Taking a deep breath, Dao Wen reflected that everyone would get the happiness they desired, but he wouldn’t.
Zong Jin handed him a cup of warm honey water. "You will also get the happiness you want."
Dao Wen scoffed. "How? Where can I find it? It’s easy to say."
Zong Jin replied earnestly, "Marry me. A new beginning."
Dao Wen slowly raised her head. Just a moment ago, she had been feeling downcast, but now she felt like laughing. Straight men truly were straightforward; even their attempts to cheer someone up seemed so peculiar.
Unable to hold back her laughter, she blew on the steam rising from the cup and took small sips of the honey water.
Zong Jin nervously reminded her, "Don’t laugh while drinking; you might choke."
Dao Wen looked at Zong Jin’s serious expression and frowned in response. "Are you serious?"
Zong Jin paused for a moment. "Are you talking about marriage?" He nodded vigorously. "I’m serious; this is not something to joke about."
Dao Wen set the honey water aside and suddenly stood up. "Then let’s go get our marriage certificate."
Zong Jin was taken aback. "Huh?"
"What do you mean 'huh'? Didn’t you say that getting married would make me happy? Then let’s get married!"
Zong Jin was confused. "Just like that? We’re getting married?"
Dao Wen grew a bit impatient. "What? Do I need to propose to you?"
"But I haven’t done anything yet," Zong Jin protested.
She pointed around the house. "Isn’t all of this your doing? Why else would you come to my house? To play housekeeper?"
Zong Jin was stunned but quickly realized that Dao Wen wasn’t joking. Even if she was acting on impulse, he had to make this happen! He couldn’t let this opportunity slip away! He had never been good at courting women; it was far too complicated! Now that he had a chance, he needed to seize it!
He grabbed Dao Wen's hand and said, "Let’s go get our marriage certificate!"
Dao Wen pushed at Zong Jin’s arm. "Wait! Let me change my clothes and wash my face first!"
Zong Jin was anxious. "No need! You look great just like this! I like it! I really like it!"
At this moment, Dao Wen realized that in the face of absolute power, everything seemed trivial. Zong Jin was like a bull, while she felt like a little lamb.
In a daze, she was pushed into the car, still sporting dark circles under her eyes.
She was unwilling. "Wait, I said we need to take a photo for the marriage certificate! My dark circles are so obvious; at least let me cover them up!"
Zong Jin didn't care about that at all. He stepped on the gas and sped away. "If you're embarrassed, don't worry. When we take the photo at the civil affairs bureau later, I'll draw two dark circles on my own face to match yours."
As the car raced down the road, Dao Wen genuinely felt happy and amused.
At that moment, she was wearing a cotton nightgown adorned with small floral patterns—one that Zong Jin had picked out for her. Her hair was a mess, her forehead oily, and her eyes dark; she thought she looked anything but beautiful. If they took a photo in this state, it would undoubtedly be the most outrageous marriage certificate photo in the history of the civil affairs bureau.
But this life felt truly interesting; it seemed as if her wounded heart no longer hurt as sharply.
She watched Zong Jin flustered and nearly running every red light, yet he still stopped at the crosswalk. She saw him hurriedly calling Wen Cuizhi, addressing her as "Mom" repeatedly while asking for both his ID card and household registration book. In between calls, he would occasionally smile at her, and she thought he looked silly yet capable.
She thought to herself that this time would not end in failure; this time, they would definitely find happiness.
