The Zong Family Mansion was bustling with activity that night. Tong Le, having injured her foot, had gone to the hospital and returned with a set of crutches, a wheelchair, and a cast. Zong Zeyu carried Tong Le out of the car and promptly placed her in the wheelchair.
After learning that Tong Le had sprained her ankle from jumping off a building, Zong Zeyu felt a pang of concern. He was frustrated with Wu Youyou, who had instigated the whole incident, while his heart ached for his own wife who was now injured. Wu Youyou accompanied them, bowing and apologizing profusely. She swore she would never act recklessly again; today’s harrowing experience had left a deep impression on her. Not only did it leave her shaken, but she had also developed a fear of heights. Previously unafraid of bungee jumping, she now felt terrified standing even at a slight elevation.
Her intention today had been to force Zong Jin into submission by threatening to jump, but she never truly intended to go through with it. Between jumping and not jumping, she naturally leaned towards the latter. However, no one expected Tong Le to take matters into his own hands and leap off with her in his arms.
Now, she was still shaken by the experience. At that moment, she hadn’t noticed the safety mat laid out below; when Tong Le jumped, she felt as if her soul had left her body. She was convinced she would die and regretted her decision deeply. Faced with the choice between coercion and life itself, she suddenly realized that life was the most important thing. If her heart couldn’t be bound, then it shouldn’t be bound at all; if she couldn’t win someone over, then there was no need to fight for it. In that instant, she understood that her reckless behavior needed to change.
She truly believed she was going to die, but as her body landed on the safety mat, she finally grasped Tong Le’s intentions. One wouldn’t truly understand the value of life until they faced death head-on. She had hit the wall hard enough to leave her bloodied and bruised; now she felt defeated and would never dare act so recklessly again.
Wu Youyou wished it were herself who had injured her foot; this burden shouldn’t have fallen on Tong Le. But it was too late for regrets now. She stepped forward to push the wheelchair but was brushed aside by Zong Zeyu, who didn’t trust anyone—especially not Wu Youyou.
Once inside the house, Zong Jin brought Dao Wen along as well. Dao Wen had cleaned herself up; after taking a shower and changing clothes, she applied some light makeup to cover up her signature dark circles.
The mansion was warm and lively. Wen Cuizhi had instructed the household staff early on to prepare dinner, and the aroma of food wafted through the air, creating a cozy atmosphere.
Dao Wen approached Zong Zeyu and took over the wheelchair handles. “Let me take Tong Le to the restroom,” she said.
Pushing Tong Le towards the restroom, Dao Wen helped her stand by the sink to wash her hands. Turning back to her friend, she remarked, “You surprised me! You suddenly got your marriage certificate—how did Zong Jin convince you?”
Dao Wen squatted down to check Tong Le’s cast on her left foot. “Sometimes I really can’t figure you out. If I say you’re timid, you dare to jump off a building; if I say you’re bold, you turn into a coward at the first sign of trouble.”
As Dao Wen stood up to wash her hands, she continued, “It wasn’t Zong Jin who convinced me; I know my own heart. I have feelings for him. Good men are hard to come by; if I can catch one, I’ll hold on tight. Zhou Feng has found his place in life; I want that too. After years of fighting alone, I’m just tired.”
Turning off the faucet with a smile, Dao Wen added, “Survival is human nature; wanting a good life is also human nature.”
Looking at herself in the mirror reminded Dao Wen of how happy Zhou Feng appeared with his wife that day. Her first reaction had been anger and frustration; but upon reflection, she realized that wasn’t their pursuit of life just different? Zhou Feng’s companion wasn’t meant to be her; likewise, the person beside her wasn’t meant for him either. She couldn’t provide him happiness anymore, but she needed to take responsibility for her own happiness.
Tong Le felt relieved hearing this. “I’m glad you’ve come to terms with it; I thought you were just being stubborn.”
Dao Wen helped Tong Le back into the wheelchair and said with a hint of defiance in her voice, “Well, there’s some truth to being stubborn—but choosing Zong Jin is definitely not a mistake! It’s more like he chose me; perhaps I’m not his top choice since I can be quite overwhelming.”
Dao Wen and Tong Le exchanged knowing glances and burst into laughter together.
At that moment, Dao Wen's phone vibrated incessantly. He took it out to glance at the screen, ignored it, and stuffed it back into his pocket.
Tong Le remarked, "It's Zhou Zishuo, right? He knows about your marriage certificate."
Dao Wen replied, "He said he needs to rush back to the country overnight and wants me to give him an explanation. I told him to shove it; he's just a kid, what does he know?"
Suddenly, Dao Wen remembered, "By the way, what happened with that Jin Feng case? Haven't you found any clues related to Ke Wenjie? It's unfortunate that someone innocent got killed; that person really had bad luck."
