Zhou Zishuo opened his mouth to retort, accusing, "You're just selfish! You keep saying it's for the family, but isn't it really for yourself?"
Zhou Ting sneered, "Yes! If one doesn't care for oneself, heaven will punish them. My brother can abandon us and our sister for his own sake, so what do I have left to cling to? When I return from studying abroad, I will prove my worth and repay our sister! It's not about some so-called pride that makes everyone suffer!"
Zhou Zishuo fell silent. He wasn't as academically gifted as Zhou Ting and lacked her eloquence.
Dao Wen spoke up, "Exactly, why refuse the money? That sum was given to you by Zhou Feng. Whether it came from Zhou Feng's wife or not, if someone wants to give it and use money to make amends, why not accept it? Should we really lose both people and wealth? If we lose everything—people, love, family—then we can't afford to lose the money too, right? Zhou Ting is right; use that money to enhance yourself, to study abroad and improve. Zhou Zishuo can take that money and do something meaningful. Only when you both live well can Uncle and Aunt feel at ease."
Zhou Zishuo's emotions collapsed. "Money, money, money! It's always about money!"
Dao Wen replied calmly, "In this world, ninety-nine percent of things can be solved with money. The remaining one percent is something that no amount of money can fix, so there's no need to worry about it. Like Zhou Feng's amnesia—that's the one percent we can't solve. But everything else can be handled with money."
Zhou Zishuo looked up with a determined gaze. "Sister, are you really okay with this?"
Dao Wen frowned slightly and smiled without answering.
Turning to Zhou Ting, Dao Wen said, "I’ll go ask Zong Shi Yan Tuan about resigning. I’ll contact Tong Le in advance to let her know to let you go. We’ve consulted with an agency about studying abroad before; I’ll find the contact information shortly and get this sorted out."
Dao Wen turned back to Zhou Zishuo. "You have two choices: either start your own business or continue working with me at the distillery. Don't bring up anything related to Zhou Feng again; I don’t want to hear it or deal with it. I have my own new endeavors."
Zhou Zishuo lowered his head, tilting it to one side reluctantly. "I’ll work at the distillery with you; I'm not starting any business. I said I would always assist you!"
Dao Wen said, "Alright then, let’s get moving! A new chapter begins!"
Dao Wen and Zhou Ting busied themselves while Zhou Zishuo sat quietly on the sofa, lost in thought. He sighed deeply, feeling a mix of emotions. He realized that there were many things he couldn’t change; all he could do was stay true to himself. No matter what happened, he would stand by Dao Wen’s side in whatever capacity he could.
That was a mission that Zhou Feng had failed to complete; now it had become his own.
A week later came Wan Jia's funeral.
The news of Winston being killed at the entrance of Zong Shi Yan Tuan quickly spread through their circles. Winston's death was sudden and mysterious, carrying a hint of drama—and irony.
Rumors circulated that Wan Jia's father, Wan Zhang, had done too many unscrupulous things in his life and had married a much younger wife at his age; all these misdeeds were now being repaid through his only son, Winston.
As these rumors spread further, they eventually reached Wan Zhang’s ears. Furious that his son had been killed at the entrance of Zong Shi Yan Tuan, he naturally directed his anger toward them.
In just a week’s time, Zong Shi Yan Tuan found itself trending multiple times on social media due to two deaths occurring at its doorstep; its stock prices were also affected.
Of course, public relations were necessary for Zong Shi Yan Tuan. To ease tensions and suppress public opinion, Zong Jin represented the company and provided Wan Jia with full compensation while personally attending Winston's funeral.
On the day of the funeral, Zong Jin brought Dao Wen along. In recent days, Tong Le had been shadowing them for business matters and naturally attended the funeral as well.
As the ceremony began, Tong Le spotted Wan Zhang dressed in black alongside Hua Rongxiao in the hall. Hua Rongxiao was crying dramatically; it was hard to tell what brand of foundation she wore as her makeup seemed plastered on her face without any chance of smudging.
Unable to bear the scene any longer, Tong Le leaned on his cane and stepped outside the hall. By chance, he found Hou Yi there, smoking a cigarette.
Hou Yi looked surprised. "What brings you here? Representing the Zong Family?"
Tong Le glanced back into the hall, puzzled. "Don't you think that old man Wan Zhang ever wondered if his son’s sudden death was orchestrated by Hua Rongxiao?"
Hou Yi scoffed. "The death occurred at Zong Shi Yan Tuan, a perfectly staged accident. Who would suspect anything? Winston was killed by an unrelated Jin Feng; it clearly looks like an unfortunate incident."
He tossed away his cigarette butt and looked up at the sky. "My brother had such a short life. He was my best buddy, and now that he’s gone, I don’t even know who to drink with anymore. But perhaps it's for the best; living brought him nothing but suffering."
Hou Yi paused, then added, "By the way, do you know Zong Caishan? I heard he’s the biological brother of Zong Zeyu."
