The car drove towards Tong Le's residence, and Lan Qingqing pondered all the way. The weather had taken a sharp turn in recent days, and the night wind seeping through the car window was chilling to the bone.
Lan Qingqing first went to Tong Le's house, knocked on the door but received no response, so she went back downstairs. She stood at the bottom of the stairs, looking up at the darkened windows of the apartment; not a single light was on.
Mo Kai Liang silently stood behind Lan Qingqing, watching as she took out her phone, the screen lighting up and then going dark again as she hesitated.
"Why not just call her?" Mo Kai Liang finally spoke up. "Tong Le is now Zong Zeyu's fiancée; she probably wouldn't be living alone anymore. She must have somewhere to stay."
Lan Qingqing turned to him, exasperated. "Are you brainless? Do you think she'd answer if I called? After everything that happened between us, do you really think she'd pick up my call? It would be a miracle if she didn’t block me!"
Mo Kai Liang muttered under his breath that Tong Le wasn’t a petty person.
Lan Qingqing shot him a glare and kicked him lightly. "Are you still defending her? If she’s not petty, then who is? Am I? The most venomous woman in this world is Tong Le! She has that innocent face but does the most heartless things! She deliberately pushed that scumbag Ke Jie onto me! And then she brought that idiot Zhang Huizhi into my life! Have you forgotten?"
Lan Qingqing was so furious that she doubled over, clutching her stomach.
Mo Kai Liang didn’t dare to argue back; whatever Lan Qingqing said was right in his eyes. He also had his own thoughts about Tong Le's character. Back when Tong Le had just married Ke Jie, he had a good impression of her. If it weren't for pushing an honest person too far, Tong Le wouldn’t have resorted to such a series of retaliations against others.
He took out a hand warmer he had prepared earlier from the car, eager to do anything that would help Lan Qingqing feel better.
Lan Qingqing still hesitated with her phone in hand, wanting to call but feeling apprehensive.
"Why are you trying to find Tong Le at this moment?" Mo Kai Liang asked, confused. "Aren't you afraid she'll mock you?"
Lan Qingqing turned around and glared at him. "Why would she mock me? Do you think I'm funny too? Mo Kai Liang! If it weren't for you stopping me, I would have already killed that two-faced monster! I wouldn’t let him live this long!"
Mo Kai Liang felt anxious. "But killing someone is illegal! You could end up in jail!"
Lan Qingqing stepped closer to Mo Kai Liang, maliciously reminding him, "Haven't you ever killed anyone? Those villagers from your hometown who went to gamble for you—those who lost everything and committed suicide—aren't they your victims too? Mo Kai Liang, sometimes I really envy you; your mind is so empty that you think if someone isn’t dead by your hands, it doesn’t count as murder. You really know how to comfort yourself!"
She turned and walked towards the car, determined to check if Tong Le was home. If she wasn’t there, she would contact someone else to find out where Tong Le was; today she had to see her.
Meanwhile, at the Zong Family Mansion.
Wu Youyou was packing in her bedroom while Zong Jin stood outside the door in silence.
Wu Youyou grabbed everything she could carry, practically emptying the room. After packing one suitcase, she pushed it towards the door and spoke to Zong Jin, "Help me take this downstairs; the moving crew will be here any minute."
"Do we really have to move out tonight?"
Wu Youyou stood straight, looking at the poker-faced Zong Jin. She couldn't tell if it was the lighting or a complete shift in her mindset, but at that moment, she felt that Zong Jin wasn't as attractive as she had once thought. Though tall, he always exuded a strong air of rigidity, and it was precisely this type of personality that she disliked the most.
She suddenly laughed out loud, causing Zong Jin to furrow his brow in confusion.
Wu Youyou took two steps forward, confronting Zong Jin. Just then, Cui Zhi happened to come upstairs. Upon seeing the scene, Cui Zhi rushed over, ready to intervene. What was going on? Were they having another argument? Hadn't they agreed to move tonight to a rented studio nearby for convenience?
Wu Youyou remained calm, her eyes fixed on Zong Jin. Yes, from now on, she wouldn't have to reach out for money every day. Each time she asked for a little more, she felt guilty and uneasy, often comforting herself with the thought of her sister's passing—that this was what he owed her. It must have been tough for him too. She remembered one time when he had drunk too much and said some drunken words. He mentioned that every time he saw her, it reminded him of her sister, and he would feel regret and guilt, constantly reminding himself that he didn't deserve happiness.
