Hua Rongxiao changed her clothes while saying, "We need to get this done quickly. Once I’m pregnant, I’ll just tell the old man that the IVF worked. I’ve already talked to the hospital; they will cooperate with me. Everyone there is on our side."
Turning around, she let her discarded clothes fall to the floor and placed her hands on Ke Jie’s shoulders, teasingly saying, "You need to hurry up and make me pregnant with our child."
After a moment of intimacy, Hua Rongxiao nestled in Ke Jie’s arms and brought up the topic of the perfume saleswoman who had once flirted with him. "Have you been in touch with her lately?"
Ke Jie’s heart skipped a beat. He wasn’t sure if it was about her or if his secret meetings with Ge Miao had been discovered. He hesitated for a moment before responding, "Are you talking about that salesgirl? I’ve completely forgotten about her. Why do you suddenly bring her up?"
Hua Rongxiao shrugged and got up. "I just thought of her, so I asked. I’m going to take a shower; come have hot pot with me tonight."
As she headed to the bathroom, Ke Jie quickly grabbed his phone. He opened the chat window with Ge Miao, thinking he should block her immediately to avoid Hua Rongxiao seeing anything.
However, the chat interface still showed their conversation from two days ago. After their passionate encounter, he had sent Ge Miao a message, but she hadn’t replied since then. It was all very strange.
Ke Jie dragged Ge Miao into his blacklist and absentmindedly scrolled through a news app. The first headline that caught his eye was about a local murder case.
The police had discovered a female corpse in a stinking pool of water. She appeared to be in her twenties, and by the time she was found, most of her internal organs had been removed. Her skull was fractured, missing half of it, and the scene was gruesome.
Ke Jie wasn’t surprised; there were always some mentally unstable individuals or love-related vendettas leading to such horrors.
As he scrolled through the comments section, one post caught his attention: "The deceased was her colleague, named Ge Miao."
Ke Jie stared at the name Ge Miao in the comments, reading it over and over again, fearing he might have misread it. Below in the comments section, someone even posted unedited photos from the crime scene.
He clicked on the photos and felt a jolt run through him from head to toe as he recognized the victim—Ge Miao—her body horrifically disfigured and submerged in that foul water, her skull shattered and mingled with decaying matter.
Ke Jie grabbed a trash can by the bed and felt nauseous. At that moment, out of the corner of his eye, he caught sight of a white bracelet on the nightstand—a carved piece made from some animal bone.
He recalled how Hua Rongxiao had casually asked about Ge Miao earlier; everything suddenly became clear.
He snatched up the bracelet, intending to confront Hua Rongxiao. But as he reached the bedroom door, he faltered. He didn’t dare confirm or deny anything; how could he even begin to explain? Would he admit that he had done something with Ge Miao that Hua Rongxiao would despise? If Ge Miao truly was killed by Hua Rongxiao, it meant she already knew his secret.
Ke Jie stood frozen in place, lost in thought and anxiety.
In the end, he backed down.
He could no longer dare to do anything behind Hua Rongxiao’s back that she wouldn’t approve of.
