Mo Kai Liang did not easily relent. The two drove to the company, a low two-story office building, where the makeshift warehouse in the backyard served as a place for debt collection and violence.
Upon arrival, Mo Kai Liang saw the lifeless body of the debtor, already cold and with a face that had turned a ghastly shade of blue.
Zheng Shucai kicked the corpse lightly, unfazed. "Brother, this guy just couldn’t take a beating. A few hits and he was done for. We hadn’t even gotten to the good stuff yet. The real issue now is how to deal with this body. There are too many people outside, and it won’t be easy to transport him."
Mo Kai Liang glanced toward the front yard. "Where are the brothers?"
"They're all out working," Zheng Shucai replied. "Those collecting debts are collecting debts, and those lending money are lending money. Everyone is busy."
Mo Kai Liang instructed him to keep the matter of the dead man quiet.
He took out the business card Zheng Shucai had given him, hesitating for a minute or two before dialing the number on it. After hanging up, Zheng Shucai leaned closer to Mo Kai Liang. "Brother, have you made up your mind? Are you going to cooperate with them? I told you, it’s foolish not to make money when it’s there for the taking. Besides, this corpse is just a burden; we might as well sell it and make some profit!"
Zheng Shucai smacked his lips. "People these days will do any kind of business. They take both living and dead people. I can understand taking living ones; it’s just about harvesting organs! But what do they want with a dead body? It’s not like the organs are still functioning! Are they going to do skin grafts? Or maybe they’ll peel off the flesh and use the bones for bracelets?"
The more he spoke, the more amused he became. "When I was a kid, my mom told me about those perverts who would grind human skulls into bowls or make bracelets from human bones. It’s truly insane! But surely that doesn’t happen anymore, right?"
Zheng Shucai's words made Mo Kai Liang think of Ge Miao that Lan Qingqing had mentioned—a mysterious death where the body was found in a filthy ditch, missing organs and with half of its skull crushed, while the other half had vanished without a trace.
Mo Kai Liang couldn’t help but shudder. Nowadays, things were getting increasingly sinister; perhaps those dark elements had never truly disappeared but were simply hidden deeper.
"I want to collaborate with them because I need them to handle this body," Mo Kai Liang said. "Otherwise, having this corpse here will eventually lead to trouble."
He reminded Zheng Shucai that when their people arrived, he should say that the man had died suddenly from a heart attack and that he had no family to take care of him, which was why they needed help with handling the situation.
Zheng Shucai nodded repeatedly. "I understand, brother. I can handle this."
Looking at the bloodstains on the ground, Mo Kai Liang walked over to the sink and picked up a mop to clean up himself. Even he was surprised; in the past, he would have panicked at the sight of someone bleeding, but now he didn’t even regard a life as significant anymore. Ultimately, it was money that had made him fearless.
Half an hour later, the person from the business card indeed arrived—a man in a suit accompanied by several underlings who entered the backyard. Upon seeing the body lying on the ground, he didn’t ask any questions but handed Mo Kai Liang one hundred thousand yuan in cash and instructed his men to bag up the corpse and place it in a large cardboard box labeled as containing washing machines. They pretended to be furniture company workers as they carried it away.
Mo Kai Liang observed Suit Man's face—his square jawline gave him a serious demeanor; whether speaking or smiling, he appeared very official, almost robotic.
The payment was straightforward—one hundred thousand yuan in cash.
Suit Man explained to Mo Kai Liang, "This is our first collaboration. Since it's just a corpse, its value isn’t high; hence we’ve given you a bit more this time. In future dealings involving live subjects, we will pay top prices—starting at one hundred thousand yuan per organ—and it will only increase from there."
He extended his hand for a handshake.
Mo Kai Liang hesitated for two seconds before shaking his hand. Afterward, Suit Man and his crew left behind one hundred thousand yuan in cash on the table.
Zheng Shucai was in high spirits, exclaiming, "Brother! They didn't ask anything at all, just handed over the money! How straightforward is that!"
He began to calculate how much his body might be worth—his heart, lungs, kidneys, corneas, liver—how much would all of that fetch?
With a mischievous grin, he wondered aloud, "What about my appendix? Do they want that? How about my intestines? Who would have thought my flesh and blood could be so valuable! This is way faster than making money, brother!"
Mo Kai Liang remained serious, not envious of such a way to earn. If he were tasked with this job, he honestly wouldn't know how to go about it. His emotions were complex at the moment, and his expression was quite intriguing.
Zheng Shucai leaned closer to Mo Kai Liang and asked, "What are you thinking about? You look lost in thought!"
Mo Kai Liang was filled with worry and fear. Just moments ago, he had witnessed one of Suit Man's subordinates moving a body into a cardboard box. He had seen that the subordinate was wearing a work shirt with the name of a logistics company printed on the chest. The owner of that logistics company was Ke Jie.
