Hua Rongxiao had just let her guard down when she received new information from her subordinates that the charges against Ke Wenjie had increased. At that moment, she was no longer at the hotel across from the company; instead, she was in her car, parked in the basement. Sitting in the driver's seat with her hands gripping the steering wheel, she pondered for a long time.
It was clear that the trucks transporting contraband were not at the company, so why had the police suddenly seized the normal vehicles used for deliveries? What were they investigating? Could it be that her underground dealings had been discovered?
Hua Rongxiao immediately called one of her subordinates to inquire. After some discussion, her subordinate explained, "Hua Jie, I’m not sure why the police suddenly detained those vehicles. However, I spoke to a few people who are in the know, and they said that the vehicles seized by the police had been used as transit vehicles during our operations. There are certain stretches of road where inspections are particularly strict, and we had to use company vehicles for cover."
Hua Rongxiao felt a surge of anxiety. The vehicles used for transit had been seized by the police—did this mean they were already aware of something?
Her subordinate continued, "Hua Jie, I really don’t know what’s going on right now. I need to ask around more to get to the bottom of this. Why don’t you check with Ke Zong? After all, the company is being investigated because of him. If it weren’t for Ke Zong’s case involving hidden drugs in the walls, the police wouldn’t have traced back to our logistics company."
Hua Rongxiao shouted in frustration, "I want to know too! How did Ke Wenjie’s personal case lead to an investigation of the company? This is absolutely ridiculous!"
Her subordinate replied, "I heard that the police are investigating the source of the drugs hidden in the walls and suspect that Ke Wenjie used the logistics company to secretly transport illegal chemicals. That’s how they ended up tracing it back to us."
The more Hua Rongxiao thought about it, the more suspicious it seemed. Although it could be considered a reason, it felt flimsy at best.
She said sternly, "The police must know something. Make sure everyone stays alert; things are tense right now."
"Understood, Hua Jie. You can rest assured," her subordinate replied.
Not long after hanging up, within two hours, Hua Rongxiao received a notification from the police asking to question her.
Naturally, she complied; at times like this, cooperating with law enforcement was crucial to avoid appearing guilty. She also prepared herself for confrontation and had her lawyer on standby.
The police questioning didn’t catch Hua Rongxiao off guard; it was merely about why she invested in Ke Wenjie’s company and whether she was actually its true owner.
Hua Rongxiao was not afraid of such inquiries; it was obvious they were trying to coerce her into confessing. The police had no solid evidence—how could they assume she was connected to this company? Besides, she and Ke Wenjie were not married; at most, they were just dating and had no business dealings.
Ke Wenjie was the legal representative of the company, and all contracts were handled by him. If something happened to the company, what did it have to do with her?
Hua Rongxiao responded calmly; without concrete evidence, there was nothing they could do against her.
She knew this encounter was merely a formality and thus spoke a few words that would surely irritate them. "I’m cooperating with you voluntarily; what if I chose not to? Just based on speculation you dare threaten me? Pressuring me without any evidence—does that align with your investigative procedures? The company belongs to Ke Wenjie; he is its legal representative—what does this have to do with me? I merely acted impulsively out of love and spent some money—do you really think you can suspect me over this? Isn’t that going too far? Besides, I’m also a victim here; Ke Wenjie deceived me out of my money! If you find him, please let me know—I still need to settle accounts with him!"
The police could only respond with official language since they lacked substantial evidence against Hua Rongxiao.
After leaving, she remained extremely vigilant throughout. She suspected that the police might send someone to follow her. If they discovered that she had helped Ke Wenjie escape from the city, things would become complicated.
Hua Rongxiao returned home directly and instructed her subordinates to keep a close watch around her. Although they did not detect any suspicious individuals, she knew better than to let her guard down.
She took out her phone and called one of her men. When the call connected, her voice carried a hint of fatigue. "I can't move around freely for a while. Keep an eye on the business matters at the company, especially with Ke Wenjie. And remember, the police's recent actions are all because of that wretched Jin Zi Meng. If she hadn't exposed Ke Wenjie, they wouldn't have traced back to the logistics company. Find an opportunity soon and deal with that wretched girl; I don't have time to play games with her."
Her subordinate responded promptly, "Understood, Hua Jie. You can rest assured; we will handle it as soon as possible."
