Hou Yi returned to the booth, his gaze landing on Tong Le. She removed a red woven bracelet from her wrist, a bracelet that Hou Yi had once snatched away. According to him, this red bracelet brought him good luck.
Though Tong Le was reluctant to part with the bracelet she had worn for many years, at that moment, she hoped it would bring good fortune to Hou Yi and keep him safe. She gestured to Hou Yi, extending her hand.
Hou Yi obediently reached out, and Tong Le placed the bracelet on his wrist. He was taken aback—what did this mean? Was she giving it to him? Just before, she had cried and insisted on getting it back, but now she was willing to let it go?
"It's not about being willing or not," Tong Le explained. "I just hope this bracelet can bring you good luck. Didn't you say that when you wore it before, your luck was always great?"
Hou Yi thought for a moment; that was true—he hadn't lost a game while wearing it. He admired the bracelet on his wrist, feeling quite pleased. Once it was on him, there would be no taking it back. "You’re not just feeling generous because you had a bit too much to drink, are you?"
Tong Le laughed and replied, "I’m not drunk at all. I just wanted to say that everything has come to a pause now. Our lives still stretch ahead of us. After a good night's sleep, we’ll embark on new journeys. I hope we all can stay safe."
She picked up her nearly empty glass and clinked it against Hou Yi's, saying, "Thank you for taking care of me during this time."
Hou Yi silently watched Tong Le; he seemed to sense something. He looked down at the bracelet on his wrist—it felt like they hadn’t said anything yet had communicated so much. He instinctively smiled; after all, she was the woman he cherished, always bringing him comfort and surprise.
"I will always stand behind you," Hou Yi declared. "If one day Zong Zeyu bullies you, I’ll chop him into pieces and feed him to the pigs."
Tong Le rolled her eyes. "You’re the pig feed!"
At that moment, Dao Wen returned with drinks in hand, just as Wu Youyou burst into the bar.
Spotting Hou Yi at the booth, Wu Youyou's eyes lit up. "What are you doing here?"
Dao Wen gestured to Wu Youyou, saying, "Let’s have a drink! Once we finish, we’ll head out."
Tong Le was pleasantly surprised. "Wu Youyou! You came too?"
Wu Youyou instinctively glanced at Dao Wen before replying, "I was just passing by. Dao Wen said you were here, so I came."
Tong Le frowned as she looked between Dao Wen and Wu Youyou; she hadn’t noticed when these two had started getting close.
After some drinks, Dao Wen suggested, "How about the three of us take a drive over to Cross-Sea Bridge? The night breeze isn’t too chilly, and I heard there’s a light show there."
Wu Youyou chimed in enthusiastically, "Sounds great!"
Hou Yi was perceptive, so he decided to stay silent. In places crowded with women, there was bound to be trouble.
Dao Wen settled the bill at the bar while Wu Youyou followed Hou Yi out of the pub. By the roadside, a few couples stood together, lost in their own world.
Wu Youyou sidled up to Hou Yi and took the initiative to invite him, "Hey, do you have some free time? There's an art exhibition. Want to check it out together? I sent you a message this morning, but you didn’t reply."
Hou Yi, with a cigarette dangling from his lips, showed no interest.
Wu Youyou thought for a moment and suggested, "How about a concert? We could go paragliding or try an escape room."
The more Hou Yi listened, the more absurd her suggestions seemed. He had no interest in any of it.
He turned around and pierced through Wu Youyou's little scheme, "You’re not seriously thinking about dating me, are you?"
His gaze swept over Wu Youyou as he added, "I’m not interested in you."
Wu Youyou instantly jumped up in frustration. "Then what are you interested in? You’re not keen on anything I suggest! What do you actually like? Just say it!"
Hou Yi flicked away his cigarette butt and crushed it underfoot. He teased her deliberately, "I like watching adult films and big-chested women. Is that satisfactory?"
With that, Hou Yi turned and walked towards his car, leaving Wu Youyou with a casual wave goodbye. He called back to Tong Le, "I’m heading out now. Have fun tonight!"
