The news of the temporary closure of New Life Hospital quickly spread, and many family members of patients wanted to go to the hospital to demand an explanation. However, they were unaware of the promises made by those in charge, and within a day, they abandoned their protests and accepted compensation.
This situation was anticipated by Shui Su. With the foundation laid during the previous meeting, the group did not find anything unusual upon hearing the news. After all, they were currently embroiled in internal conflicts while external enemies lurked, making closure and retreat the correct choice.
"I just wonder how much of what’s inside they will transfer. It’s hard to say if they’ve added any new muscle lately," Song Bunan said, diligently removing the husk from an ear of corn. His words were met with approval from Xiao Mei, who was already munching on her second ear, nodding in agreement that without an insider to relay information, it was indeed difficult to guess.
"Do you think Ming You knows? But Bunan doesn’t want to involve Brother Hua. Even going to find Ming You behind his back could be dangerous," Xiao Mei remarked.
"I have a feeling that Ming You is probably with Brother Hua right now. You see, even though we haven’t discussed business much in the group lately, we often chat casually. Brother Hua speaks the least and often disappears," Song Bunan analyzed seriously while handing the cleaned corn to Xin Yi, who seemed lost in thought.
"Are you saying that Ming You’s identity and connections in the lab are something Brother Hua already knows?" Xiao Mei asked.
Song Bunan nodded slightly, indicating it was possible. After all, Brother Ming Hua was quite intelligent; it would be strange for him not to think about it after learning that his sister worked in such a place. "Brother Ming Hua ranked first in reconnaissance class back in the day—super impressive. I remember when I drew him as my opponent; it was a nightmare for me," Song Bunan recalled.
This prompted Shui Su to nod in agreement, stating that Bunan's analysis made a lot of sense. He suggested that if they had already shared many things with Ming Hua and directly asked for his help, it would be odd for him not to offer assistance upon learning about their plans against New Life Hospital. Normally, even if they just asked him to bring a bottle of soy sauce over, he would rush over immediately; he had never been careless about significant matters like this. The silence now, combined with his relationship with Ming You, indicated there must be something between them that led to their unilateral refusal to contact them.
"Or perhaps both he and Ming You are waiting for us to take action first. That way, regardless of any moves from that laboratory or others that might hinder or harm us later on, they could assist us as external support. It just seems quite puzzling at the moment," he concluded.
His words received unanimous agreement from everyone present; even Xin Yi, who had been silent throughout the discussion, couldn’t help but nod in agreement.
Xiao Mei noticed the man's actions and asked why he was so quiet today—had he quarreled with Song Bunan before leaving?
A flicker of confusion crossed Xin Yi's otherwise expressionless face as he wondered why Xiao Mei would think that.
"Just analyzing the situation," the instigator of the question shrugged nonchalantly, claiming curiosity as his only motive.
Song Bunan swung the corn husk in his hand, glaring fiercely as he said, "You really have a wicked mind, stirring up trouble here without hoping for anything good." Xin Yi stopped his lover's childish antics and replied that he was just thinking about his own matters, but he had been listening to their discussion and hadn’t argued with Bunan.
Xiao Mei pouted in boredom but quickly adjusted her mood and leaned closer, asking Xin Yi what he was thinking about.
Not wanting to hide anything from these people, Xin Yi spoke without much thought, expressing that although Mighty Falcon had disbanded recently, he felt that there were definitely more familiar faces around him—people who had previously worked in Mighty Falcon. This revelation made Song Bunan's eyes widen in disbelief as he exclaimed, "Is that so?"
Xin Yi nodded and explained solemnly, "Since the day I retrieved my files after Mighty Falcon disbanded, whether I'm out grocery shopping or running errands, I keep seeing people who give me a familiar feeling in many corners. This sensation comes from Mighty Falcon; most of those who came out of it have unique habitual actions. The people I've seen are not just passing by—they genuinely exist around us. I'm wondering if they have all joined the laboratory and what their purpose is for appearing near us."
It was possible. Song Bunan set down the corn husk in his hand, wiped his hands clean, and pulled up a video on his phone—a recording from the surveillance camera at a shop in the village that had been closed for several days.
In the video, several groups of people could be seen lingering outside the shop's entrance, walking around the building multiple times as if searching for a way to get inside. Among them were a few tall individuals wearing Mighty Falcon insignia. Their behavior was aggressive as they forcibly broke open the door lock and left shortly after. Unfortunately, the surveillance did not have audio capabilities, so they couldn’t hear what those people muttered after exiting.
"This is indeed a tactic that Mighty Falcon would employ," an ex-employee of Mighty Falcon chimed in online. "According to our operational guidelines, if there’s a place that needs investigation but is locked or inaccessible, we would forcibly break in to search—even if it meant offending the owner. A few of those faces look somewhat familiar; they must be new recruits from other teams. Mighty Falcon hadn’t recalled uniforms before disbanding, so they would still wear them while carrying out tasks—likely following orders from higher-ups."
"Good thing my little shop closed early; otherwise, your former colleagues would have caused me trouble," Song Bunan remarked. "You made a wise decision to leave that place; you won’t be brainwashed or exploited and can live well."
Bunan's tone was filled with a pride that Xin Yi didn’t quite understand as he analyzed why the other felt proud of him for leaving.
"Confused?" The person who noticed his bewilderment smiled brightly. "Ever since you mentioned that Mighty Falcon was investigating itself by conducting individual inquiries, I’ve been worried about your safety. Although I know you’re capable and have friends on your side, they can’t always be there to help you when danger strikes—I can’t either. The laboratory has managed to infiltrate so many places; they must have their own capabilities. If they want to come near us, it would be easy for them. But now that you’ve left, they’ll have new considerations and won’t dare act recklessly; after all, I still need to keep some caution."
Song Bunan’s smile was sincere without a hint of pretense, which made Xin Yi unable to resist smiling back. He sincerely thanked Bunan for his unexpected support. The one who received such gratitude smiled even wider, his bright white teeth almost exposed to the air as he shyly added that family doesn’t concern themselves with such things.
"Perhaps since Old Otter's death, Mighty Falcon has become irredeemable," Xin Yi reflected sadly. "They meticulously planned everything back then yet still failed in the end; even now we don’t know where that thing went or can’t catch the culprit."
Beside him, Song Bunan suddenly choked on his words and pounded his chest in frustration. After finally regaining composure, there was no trace of a smile on his face—only awkwardness and unease—as he avoided Xin Yi’s concerned gaze like a thief caught red-handed. Xin Yi also noticed that Xiao Mei across from him wore a similar expression but managed to return to calmness after a brief moment of embarrassment.
He asked what was wrong, and the man chuckled awkwardly, stammering, "About the loss of that thing... I... I have something I don't know whether I should say."
The man's obvious unease clearly indicated to Xin Yi that there was definitely something suspicious about this matter. He gestured for Song Bunan not to hide anything, and watched as the other put down his food, straightened up, and solemnly said to him, "What Old Otter lost in front of that abandoned building is actually something I took."
This statement detonated like a bomb in Xin Yi's mind, ringing in his ears. He looked into Song Bunan's eyes, which were always glistening with sincerity, assuring him that this was no joke.
Xin Yi felt at a loss; a flood of bad thoughts surged forth, leaving him unsure of how to continue questioning. However, Song Bunan didn't give him much time to think and continued to explain apologetically, "It was my client at the time who told me there was something he needed there—a suitcase that was going to be sold by a man. As the one being entrusted, I naturally had to prioritize my client. At that time, Old Otter was standing in front of the abandoned building waiting. I avoided the surveillance and used a little trick to take the suitcase from him. But I can assure you that my method only ensured he would be dazed for two minutes and posed no danger to his life. Inside that suitcase was a List. If you had walked into the kitchen when you first came looking for me, you would have seen that suitcase."
Song Bunan spoke slowly, giving him enough time to react. Xin Yi understood what Song Bunan meant and was very clear that his lover was not the murderer of his teammate; he was merely a key factor in the mission's failure but had nothing to do with death.
Xin Yi accepted this explanation. He handed back Song Bunan's corn and said lightly, "You were just doing your job. Old Otter's death is not your fault; I won't blame you. But I need you to tell me why that List is so important."
"The people on that List could do many self-serving things if found by the laboratory or other families. Their work is specialized and their abilities are strong; they are sought after by many as good helpers. At that time, the Jiang Family also wanted that List, but before they could investigate useful leads after finding them, your Mighty Falcon had already gotten there first and made a deal with the Zhang Family." Shui Su interjected, "It's fortunate that List didn't fall into the hands of the laboratory; otherwise, our situation would be even more troublesome now."
"What about the List?" Xin Yi pressed.
Song Bunan chuckled awkwardly and sheepishly admitted he had burned it. "That thing disappears in an instant when it touches fire."
"Who would have thought you had skills as a thief," Xin Yi remarked, making Song Bunan feel a bit embarrassed as he shrank back on his stool, claiming he simply loved his profession too much.
"This is a good thing," Xin Yi said. "This is a good thing."
