The military-grade explosion-proof glass was undeniably of high quality.
While Xin Yi was still enjoying the warmth of Song Bunan's embrace, a sudden commotion erupted outside, accompanied by chaotic footsteps. He looked up to see the guards who had been stationed outside tilting their heads toward the distance, while several lab-coated individuals, previously idling nearby, hurriedly fled.
Only Song Bunan, holding him tightly, remained calm and unfazed, wrapping him securely in his arms without even casting a glance elsewhere. Xin Yi guessed that reinforcements must have arrived. He gently shifted his numb legs, attempting to stand up and regain some mobility for future actions. However, Song Bunan wouldn’t let him move, holding him tightly like an octopus and saying nothing about what was happening.
Suddenly, the lights outside went out, plunging the underground base into darkness. It was only then that he was released. Song Bunan's voice, laced with amusement, echoed softly in front of him as he said they had finally arrived.
“Song Bunan!” A voice suddenly rang out from outside the glass. A woman in a lab coat stood at the door with a flashlight in hand, her eyes wide with rage. “You did this!”
Xin Yi felt his boyfriend slowly rise to stand in front of him. He looked up and saw only a silhouette. The beam of the woman’s flashlight cast a white glow around Song Bunan’s figure; from this angle, he appeared almost like an angel descending from heaven, radiating a light that didn’t belong here.
The accused responded casually, with an innocent tone, “Don’t make accusations without evidence! I’ll sue you for defamation! You took my phone and locked me in here—what do you expect me to do?”
The woman pounded on the glass in anger, shaking her flashlight to summon the guards. The moment she opened the door, several people rushed in and pinned Song Bunan down. Xin Yi was also seized by them and pulled forcefully toward the exit. The woman’s furious expression looked particularly sinister in the dim light as she shot a scornful glance at Xin Yi and mocked Song Bunan, “You miscalculated; this place is a maze. If you want to be with your lover, wait until your next life. Take him away! Lock him inside and let him suffocate.”
Xin Yi struggled in vain; the effects of the tranquilizer still lingered in his system, and those holding him were incredibly strong, their grips like iron clamps on his arms. He turned to look at Song Bunan and saw him smiling wickedly, a rare glint of madness flashing in his eyes.
“No, you’re too late.”
As soon as Song Bunan finished speaking, there was a deafening explosion. The wall outside the glass room blew apart with a thunderous roar, sending countless stones and debris crashing down. The shockwave knocked over those standing at the door while those inside were affected only slightly.
Standing closest to the door, Xin Yi felt his head spin from the blast; his ears rang with a deafening buzz that left him disoriented. The person holding onto him seemed acutely aware of the situation and collapsed to the ground in pain, clutching their head.
He was yanked away from the doorway by someone else. After struggling to focus his vision again, he saw Song Bunan standing beside him with a cold expression, holding a dagger that he had somehow seized during the chaos. Without hesitation, he thrust it into the woman’s neck.
The woman gasped in terror, her mouth wide open as she struggled to breathe, but the blood surging from her throat only allowed her to emit futile choking sounds. She collapsed to the ground, lifeless. As for the experiment lying down, Song Bunan paid it no mind.
Xin Yi had already experienced the sharpness of the dagger; it was perfect for cutting through handcuffs. Song Bunan led him outside, where several bright lights streamed in from the explosion site, with Xiao Mei at the forefront.
“After hundreds of missions, this is the first time I feel like a miner digging a tunnel. Can’t these lunatics in the lab just make a proper entrance?” The boy’s impatience was more powerful than the explosions, shaking off dirt from his body. Seeing them standing in front of him, his disdain was even more evident as he shot a glance at Song Bunan and said, “If you pull this kind of stunt again, I’ll definitely call Song Buxian to report you. Uncle Meng almost had a heart attack when he turned around and you were gone. If we hadn’t comforted him, he’d probably be in the hospital by now.”
Hearing this, Song Bunan laughed adorably and promised to apologize properly to Uncle Meng when they returned. Xin Yi noticed that there weren’t many people in this group; aside from Xiao Mei and Shui Su, there were only a few familiar faces. Noticing Xin Yi staring, Song Bunan introduced them: “The one walking third is Ming Hua, and behind him is Qian Gu. That girl with the high ponytail is Lin Mo Hui; you’ve seen her before. And then there’s Mo Hui’s… um…”
It was difficult to find a suitable name for the golden-haired individual. Lin Mo Hui approached with a calm demeanor and said he could just call her Little Dog.
Ming Hua then came up to Xin Yi, bowing slightly and speaking in an apologetic tone: “I’m really sorry about the harm my sister caused you and your friend. I apologize on her behalf and hope you won’t be angry when you see her later.”
This left Xin Yi feeling somewhat awkward; he didn’t know how to respond appropriately. Just as he hesitated, he heard Ming You’s voice behind him. Turning around, he saw the woman waving at him alongside their leader.
“Since this is part of the plan, I’m sure Brother will forgive me! Your friend is fine and being brought back now—aren’t you happy?” Ming You raised an eyebrow at him playfully, her mischievous demeanor overshadowed by the blood on her face and clothes.
“Plan.” Xin Yi seized on that word and shot a questioning look at Song Bunan. However, Song Bunan pretended not to notice, laughing it off and suggesting they deal with the lab’s mess now that everyone was gathered. Xin Yi mentally noted that he would demand an explanation later.
The path to the woman’s office was littered with disheveled Patient Gowns; several offices contained white coats that were pale with fear, shrinking back at their sight and unable to meet their gaze. This was the same route their leader had taken with Ming You earlier, meaning these were all their doing.
Xin Yi turned to look at their composed leader, who smiled upon noticing his gaze and said that none of this was his doing—it was all that little girl’s work. The girl referred to as Little Dog walked at the front of the group and cheerfully replied when called out: “This is nothing.”
What would count as something then? Xin Yi couldn’t help but reevaluate his perception of everyone around him; they all seemed so accustomed to chaos that they could kick aside any obstructing Patient Gowns without hesitation. Ming Hua even squatted down to examine an injury and commented on Ming You’s method of attack.
Song Bunan had been walking beside Ming You since the beginning of their operation, occasionally leaning in to whisper small talk, but not exchanging a single word with him. Xin Yi walked alongside Lin Mo Hui, who frowned in distaste upon seeing the bodies on the ground. She moved delicately, as if performing ballet, careful not to touch anything. She even shouted at Ming You, complaining that this time was too filthy and that next time she might just add poison to the food.
The girl in front chuckled, saying that in such a large place, it was impressive enough for her to manage the cleanup alone, let alone keep it clean. "Next time, I’ll bring a cleaner with me; it’ll be spotless," Ming You retorted without looking back.
"Alright, this is it. Look at who’s gone inside; I’ve seen it too many times already, it’s getting boring." Under Ming You's lead, they quickly arrived at a large office wrapped in metal. The path leading to the door was pristine, as if no one had walked there.
"What is this?" Qin Xiang asked.
"This is the source of everything," Ming Hua yawned. "According to the 'legends,' the Gu Family collaborated with others to open this laboratory. Both the technology and equipment were provided by the other party, and this part is classified at an extremely high level—so high that even the ordinary management of the lab doesn’t know about it. Our ultimate goal is not only to eliminate the leader but also to destroy this place entirely; no technology or equipment should be left behind that could be found or reused by others. That’s why only a few people are involved in the final operation."
"Knowing everything inside out makes it completely controllable," Qin Xiang summarized. He looked at Ming Hua, who smiled kindly and nodded in agreement. "But didn’t the Jiang Family say they would no longer be involved in this matter?" He glanced at Jiang Shui Su and Long Mei, who were clearly distracted by something else and hadn’t heard.
It was Song Bunan's voice that answered for them: "The Jiang Family isn’t involved; they’re here to rescue me, so they’re not part of the operation." His tone was filled with pride and self-satisfaction. Qin Xiang nodded in acknowledgment and gave him a thumbs-up.
"Alright, let’s go in, clean up, and retreat; I’m hungry," Ming You interrupted the ongoing discussion. As a successful insider within the enemy ranks, she had spent enough time in this dark place.
"Wait, before we go in, I need to confirm something with someone." The metal door slowly opened, revealing a chilling atmosphere that made Xin Yi shiver involuntarily. It was dark inside; even with good night vision, it seemed ineffective. However, the person responsible for opening the door suddenly stopped and turned to look at the last two members of their group.
"Shui Su, are you sure those few have gone down?" Ming You asked quietly, drawing attention from the two at the back. The person named gave an OK gesture to indicate everything was fine.
"Don’t worry; I personally sent them down; there won’t be any problems."
