“Lord Lu?”
I was taken aback, unable to believe the familiar figure before me.
Lord Lu made his way through the crowd towards me, his eyes reflecting the same surprise. “Miss Shen? You’re actually in Nan Zhang?”
He looked much more weathered than three years ago, with a few strands of gray at his temples, but those bright eyes remained unchanged.
“Lord Lu, it’s been a long time.”
I managed a bow, my throat tightening.
“Miss Shen, you are even more radiant than before.”
Lord Lu glanced around and lowered his voice. “Your Excellency’s passing has left Old Man heartbroken. Many old friends in the Court are reminiscing about him.”
A wave of bitterness surged in my heart.
“Thank you for your concern, my lord.”
“Zhi Yi…”
Lord Lu stepped closer, his voice barely above a whisper. “Your father entrusted me with a letter before he passed, instructing me to deliver it to you personally.”
He took out a yellowed letter from his sleeve and handed it to me.
As I took the letter, my fingers trembled as if I were holding a piece of heated iron.
“There’s one more thing.”
Lord Lu’s expression turned serious. “Your Excellency’s sudden death is indeed suspicious. Though he was frail, he was still able to joke when we met; how could he suddenly let go?”
“My lord means…”
My heart raced suddenly.
“Girl, be cautious.”
Lord Lu looked at me meaningfully. “Some matters may seem calm on the surface, but there are turbulent undercurrents beneath. Take care of yourself.”
He turned and walked away, his silhouette appearing particularly lonely in the dim light.
I stood there, my palms sweating; my father’s letter felt like an immense burden weighing down on me.
Was my father's death suspicious?
Who was behind the poison?
Was it Ji Hanzhou? My Half-Sister? Or someone else entirely?
Returning to my room, I lit a candle and trembled as I opened the envelope.
The handwriting was still my father's familiar, steady strokes, though the final characters bore a hint of exhaustion.
The letter detailed how my Half-Sister frequently sent him medicine, and how he felt unusually unwell after each dose.
"Zhi Yi, if you are reading this letter, your father is no longer in this world. Do not grieve excessively; be strong. You are the only bloodline of the Shen Family, and the future rests upon you. You have endured much, but the truth will eventually come to light; justice will not be absent."
Tears blurred my vision as I clenched my teeth, swallowing back my sobs.
"Father, I will uncover the truth and make those who harmed you pay!"
I vowed to the flickering candlelight.
As night deepened, I lay in bed, tossing and turning, a thousand thoughts racing through my mind.
When dawn broke on the horizon, I finally made up my mind—I had to return to the capital.
"Absolutely not!"
Murong Huan reacted unexpectedly to my decision, slamming his hand on the table.
"Returning now is akin to walking into a trap!"
I was taken aback; his intense reaction was surprising.
"Are we just going to let the murderer of my Father roam free?"
"You only have suspicions, no evidence," Murong Huan's voice softened a bit. "The Ji Family has deep roots in the Court; if you act recklessly, it could spell disaster."
"What should I do then?"
I clenched my fists, feeling my nails dig into my palms without realizing it.
Murong Huan fell silent for a moment before suddenly asking, "Zhi Yi, do you trust me?"
This was the first time he had called me by my name directly.
I was taken aback. Trust? The betrayal of Ji Hanzhou was still fresh in my mind; how could I easily trust anyone again?
"It's normal to hold back," Murong Huan seemed to see through my thoughts. "The wounds from three years ago can't heal in just three months."
He paused.
"But I assure you, I will never harm you. On the contrary, I want to help you."
"Why?"
I watched him warily. "Why do you want to help me? We've only known each other for a few months; why are you so invested in me?"
Murong Huan smiled, a smile that reminded me of the bright moon during the first snowfall in the capital—clear yet distant.
"The answer to that question is both simple and complex."
He walked to the window, turning his back to me.
"Because I have an irreconcilable enmity with Ji Hanzhou."
