Murong Huan paused for a moment, then took a deep breath.
"Because... because I like you, Zhi Yi. From the first time I saw you, I was drawn to you."
I stared at him in shock, unable to believe my ears.
His confession came so suddenly, like a stone thrown into a calm lake.
"I know it seems abrupt to say this now," Murong Huan said with a wry smile, "but I hope you can believe in my sincerity. I will help you uncover the truth and seek justice for your father."
A mix of emotions swirled within me. Was this genuine feeling or did he have ulterior motives?
" Young Master Murong, thank you for your kindness. But I will handle my own affairs."
Disappointment flickered in his eyes, but he quickly regained his composure.
"I understand. However, if you change your mind, you can always find me."
As he turned to leave, I bit my lip. In this unfamiliar place, he might be my only ally.
In the days that followed, I taught Mu Rong Yao how to play the piano while secretly plotting my next move.
Mu Rong Yao was smarter than I had imagined. " Sister Zhi Yi, do you write so many letters every night for someone special?"
I nearly choked on my tea.
"What nonsense! This is my plan."
She pouted. "You're lying; I saw you write the character 'Ji'."
I ruffled her hair. "Little girl, it's not good to snoop on others."
"I didn't snoop; you left it on the table!" she retorted with a pout.
A month later, Murong Huan visited in a hurry.
"Ji Hanzhou is coming to Nan Zhang for an inspection."
My teacup paused mid-air. "When?"
"Three days from now. I can arrange for you to meet him."
"No," I set down the teacup firmly. "I don't want to see him. What is his true purpose for coming to Nan Zhang?"
Murong Huan smiled slightly. "Clever. Don't worry; I will help you investigate."
Three days later, I hid among the crowd at the market and spotted Ji Hanzhou from a distance. He looked even more spirited than before, but there was a hint of coldness in his gaze. A few servants followed him, strutting about with arrogance.
"Is he really that handsome?" Mu Rong Yao whispered to me. "I think my brother is much more attractive than him."
I couldn't help but laugh. "Little Girl, what do you know?"
"I know!" She proudly lifted her small face. "I can tell you don't like him; your eyes look at him like you see a snake."
I rubbed my nose; this little girl was too perceptive.
In the evening, Murong Huan brought news. "He’s here to negotiate business with southern merchants. Recently, he has bought several properties in the capital, spending money like water."
I sneered. "Using my family's money, I suppose?"
Murong Huan nodded and then lowered his voice. "Interestingly, his relationship with your Half-Sister isn't good."
"What do you mean?"
"He’s staying at the best inn, but your Half-Sister didn't come along. Moreover, there's a young woman with him who seems to be a new love interest."
My heart stirred. "A new love?"
"The second daughter of the prominent Shen Family, Shen Ruoqing."
I scoffed. "The Shen Family? Isn't that my family?"
"Another Shen Family; they have no relation to yours."
Ji Hanzhou has a new love and is on bad terms with my Half-Sister—this is an opportunity.
"Can you find out what happened between Ji Hanzhou and my Half-Sister?"
Murong Huan smiled slightly. "Leave it to me."
A week later, he brought astonishing news. "Your Half-Sister has indeed fallen out with Ji Hanzhou. She often interferes with him and suspects he is having an affair."
I stared expressionlessly out the window.
"And you, Half-Sister, have not been well lately, often taking medicine."
Taking medicine?
Alarm bells rang in my mind as memories flashed back to the symptoms before Father passed away.
Could it be that Half-Sister has been poisoned too? Is it Ji Hanzhou?
"I need to return to the capital," I said, clenching my fists. "Right now."
Murong Huan did not stop me; instead, he said, "I will accompany you."
Looking into his determined eyes, I felt a stir in my heart. This man might be more reliable than I had imagined.
